direct contact between the two accounts is against the rules though - Duping for example was a bi-effect of people running 2 accounts rather than trading strangers, they did it themselves

lol... no. you need to read up on the threads on guru and listen to what GMs have to say. ANY GM will tell you running multiple instances if NOT against EULA in any way, shape, or form (this is including your "direct contact" comment). i'm in ZoS alliance and if you know what ZoS is it is thre FIRST guild ever created. it is led by an aNet GM and the guild it's self has numerous GM's in it. i am veyr well aware of "the rules" and what is and is not in the EULA.

If anything, trading yourself should be a legitimate use of dual-clienting, as it allows anyone who owns more than one account to transfer items across accounts safely, without the risk of having their items stolen by trusting another player.

it isnt illegal , cause you dont hack the .exe file (which would be illegal by EULA). U just open 2 .exe files what is legal , cause u have 2 accounts, u dont hack the registry or .exe
