@Rosekwl1 Leadbelly popularized it in the 1940's but @Huubster125 was correct- it's an American folk song dating back at least 70 years prior to Leadbelly's version. Comes from the Southern Appalachian region of America. (Thank you Music History class!)

just like a power chord on the 2nd fret a sting..except you have your ring finger barring the 4th fret d,g,b strings...so basically 1st finger-2nd fret (A) string-3rd finger-4th fret (D),(G),and (B) stings...

dont listen to skaterchad because it would all matter wich way you play it the nirvana way the leadbelly way the 50 other ppl who covered it or the actual original wich was never fucking recorded cuz it was from like 1870 or some shit so next time you think to comment on someones work just zip your lip cuz all that is spewing out is shit on any cover there is variations example listen to the nirvana and leadbelly versions back to back.good job man i did this song to but i learned it 5 minutes b4
