  • @MrBuckwilliam just celebrated 34 years out since I left prison behind. Prison school teacher told me God could change my life, He did. And hers too, shes been my wife for 32 years, 3 kids, 4 grandchildren. I always felt I was living out 'Mama Tried.' during the 20 years on the installment plan.

  • @MegaLola48 its okay- the phrase "man crush" was created when he sang his first note...you are not alone

  • @MegaLola48 I do too...and I'm not gay either....just love the man for his gr8 music.

  • I love this song

  • Why does it seem that men, back then, were real men....not... you know feminine men, like we see today. I love a rugged, all man....man!

  • @califgirl11 Some of us are just as rugged and manly as the men of the past, my father and his before him raised their children to be men, the same way my son is being raised, just because there are some pussies in the world don't mean there isn't real men! Trust me Merle would agree even in his day there were guys that just didn't have what it takes to be what you call real men!!!

  • You are right ,,,,man.....Merle ain't happy with us all..just a few of us...Merle,,,,,,,can put feeling in a song ,,that doesn't even have feelings,,,,gmf

  • My mama told me Merle had a dick bigger than a Volkswagen.

  • The producers of the movie "The Strangers" must have known that Merle called his band "The Strangers". I haven't seen the movie, but I love Merle's music!

  • It just doesn't get any better than this!

  • M and M restaurant, Mike's, Eastover Bar ( in the shopping center ) Sea Shell Restaurant......Does anyone remember my dad Hank Sr.? Hank Jr. waiting on a call. State your name and details of any......757-990-9035

  • it reminds me of Oxon Hill Md. at Mikes or Seashell ( does anyone remember my dad Hank Sr.? he was the bartender/manager from the 60s, and passed in 1991. Where is Lee Deal? Larry hamilton ( the drummer ). Call me Hank Jr. 757-990-9035 private number, can always be changed.

  • now this is real music. If this doesn't make you feel something then pal your not breathing.

  • When he says, "She tried to raise me right," emphasis on "tried" it pulls my heartstrings. Nobody else in country music ever said anything like that.

  • THE country music song. The End.

  • This song is about taking the wrong turn in life,in which alot of us do,but that damn sure doesnt mean that we cant get back on the road to recovery and be successful.

  • I am from Calif. and the god I love music. and let me tell I can dance.

  • HE WAS JUST MAKING A COMPLEMENT DUDE...HE WAS SAYING THAT BE HIS MAN IN COUNTRY MUSIC....READ BETWEEN THE LINES...ITS OK TRY LIVING IN OXON HILL MARYLAND IN THE EARLY 70S.

  • This dude my nigga

  • @lrunge09 Excuse me? Speak English. Your "nigga"?

  • @lrunge09 hes no fucking nigger do you see shit on his skin ......no hes a true natural country legand

  • this song was in the strangers lol

  • why are y'all fighting on a good song's music page? go fight on a rap page or something. this is a great song, and all of y'all military people, I thank you for letting me live free and all, but don't talk shit about the other branches.

  • @ MegaLola48 ok since your an ex bullet stopper marine I guess everyone else's statements are "foolish". I've been in the navy and I've learned more things to benefit me in the future, more than just shooting people asshole!!!

  • im an ex marine your statements are foolish

  • e marine once a marine always a marine im no marine and i knew thAT dumb ass

  • @Ferociousdaboss

Which is why they prefer to be called "former marine" and not "ex-marine." It's obvious you were never a marine.

  • 12 moms didn't try.

  • Wonderful! Great song! From one of the best!! Thanks Allen for sharing this. Country is where we all began! Whether it was in Africa 3 million or St. Louis 62, years ago. It is in your heart and soul!!

  • i love this song. my favorite part is the part when he says "and i turned 21 in prison..." with the simple drums.

  • i always loved merle ex marine listened always in the gulf

  • @MegaLola48

"ex" marine? Sorry, but saying that would either mean 1) you received a dishonorable discharge, or 2) you don't know enough about the USMC to realize that that term is offensive to marines, a.k.a. you were never a marine.

  • I remember when Dad brought home our first "Hi FI" My Mom went out and bought three albums.....Johnny Cash...learned to sing..a boy named sue.....Glenn Campbell....learne to sing Galveston....and Merle Haggard..learned to sign..Mama Tried...I was about 6 yrs old at the time....what wonderful memories. My Mom would sing to the top of her lungs....she couldn't carry a tune..but nobody said a word...lol!

  • awwwwwwwww .this is back when country was killer.............sux today ...all the sob's sound alike .......and the storys suck

  • so if he's 21 in prison do life without parole, why is he on some front porch? lol

    (it's a joke y'all don't get weird, okay?)

  • @JediMasterCheryl cause Reagan pardoned his ass haha

  • @binslashshell lol -great answer! ;)

  • This is on The Strangers (:

  • Merle's Momma goes to a big church and when they needed money for something big she would go to Merle. He would always open his pocket wide and still does.

  • country stars and television were a funny mix, especially back in the '60's. oh well: merle will always rule....

  • I just did a cover of this, check it out if you get a chance. To the 10 haters, what? Merle should have been a movie star, hansom devil back then.

  • This was the only song I could think of to dance to with my mom for groom/mother dance @ my wedding. It gave everyone a good laugh!

  • I have 'Mama Tried' tattooed across my chest. Thanks, Merle

  • Momma sure did try...

  • One of the Outlaws laying down another awesome hit...sprinkle a little dust down from the clouds Merle...and put the Country back in the music...every now and again I hear it...but not often enough!!!

  • @MrCashistheman sprinkle a little dust down from the clouds merle? its not like hes dead

  • i cant get over the facial expression at 1:50

  • 10 peoples mama's did not try

  • He's good looking here, but clearly lip-synching.

  • I will merge with the Oud this song soon

  • :)

  • This is back in the time where people used to sit on the front porch and was happy enough to actually take the time to sing and enjoy themselves. Nowadays, people worry more about who farted on FaceBook than what life is really about... Merle is truly a hero.

  • @axledobe1 True, the 50's-60's weren't perfect but things were better than now.

  • @axledobe1 HAHA so true especially about Facebook!!

  • @axledobe1 I agree with you. People use to be happy and have a life now a days they get on facebook and do their drama.

  • @axledobe1 So True!

  • @axledobe1 I wish times were still like Merles! He is truly a country music icon!

  • @TheCainsta amen to that he was a great country singer

  • @countryasever and he still is might i add! lol

  • @TheCainsta you can say that again he was a truly great legend i kinda wish i was born back in those days lol

  • @countryasever yeah i was born way too late as well! I would have loved to be alive when he was comin up and playin on the radio! The country from today is SHIT! all i listen to is Classic Country! Its the best and true!

  • @TheCainsta in my opinion some of todays is ok but it seems like its turnin into country-rock orcountry-pop theres a few decent singers left but if it werent for these guys these new folks wouldnt be singin the older folks are wat started country music but if u ask me the new folks need to put more emotion n sing there hearts out n ACTUALLY KEEP IT COUNTRY and put the old steel guitar back in there music thats just my opinion tho lol the older folks are truly great tho

  • @countryasever Agreed! Listen to George Jones - Who's Going To Fill Their Shoes!??

  • @puppymomthree noone fucking cares

  • soo awesome

i agree i wish music was still good

  • I remember this record playing on our new "Hi-Fi" Mom played it over and over, along with Johnny Cash and Glen Campbell......how lucky was I!

  • My Mom passed away in 03/10 and I am sorry that I put her through so much. Not quite as much as Merle sings about, but still quite a lot. RIP, Mom, we'll see each other someday -

  • @beautiful sentiment

    ChuckieInMT

  • The Strangers! Damn now this creeps me out.

  • Facial expressions are priceless..lol

  • I can't even think about how Obama would ever have any thing to do with this. He would have punked out in prison and gave up. As a former convict, Obama would have been my bitch and I'm only 5'8. This song is about a man who loves his mama even though he knows he is bad. That is all it is about.

  • @rodaimpaler You're a belligerent, black-hearted, nasty, evil piece of shit and a ferocious, slobbering, slack-jawed fucking retard.

  • @rodaimpaler How do you know?

  • i got into a little trouble for assault back in 1996 and the best friend i had in the world was a 65 year old guy that thought of me and my family as his own sang this song everyday till i went to trial poking fun at me i wish ol tonto was here now i miss him he was a true friend rest in peace tonto and thanks to my dad as well for being there right by my side till he died i aint the only hell my momma ever raised but i am some of it

  • @dirtracer1979 Our son got in big trouble at 14.1998- took him years as he was chrged as an adult. After he got out he livesd with us. We did what only we thought best for him. Now hes sucessfull and were garbage having nothing to do with being fit for the human population. Glade to see you had someone to look up too. I can't do enough to try & reapy my oen mother for raising me with the family values lost only after my fdada past away in 99. Yet never lost by me or me mom. We tried we lost.lol

  • ...If your last name is Garrison and you live south of Louisville, you should probably pay attention to this song

  • ah if only it ws that simple...i miss my sweet boy. his mama did try...and i love him still

  • This looks like a set from Hee. Haw. Merle was the undisputed master of prison sonsg, he could put more poingancy into them than anyone else.

  • Are you guys seriously thinking of a 2008 horror flick when listening to classic Merle Haggard? Jesus wept...

  • I can't listen to this without thinking of The Strangers!!

  • love this songs. great country simple direct fine chords. great musiciansship.Enjoyable for rocknroll freaks as me! Three cheers for the countryside. Keep the apple pie ready mom, i´m comin home.

  • Now whenever I hear this song, I remember my beautiful sister Gemma who made the film "the strangers"

  • @18praia what you mean your sister made the film??!!

  • No one can say or sing it better then Merle when it comes to mama tryin' :D

  • always have loved this song...didn't realize how handsome Merle was when he was a young me

  • always have loved this song...didn't realize how handsome Merle was when he wasa young me

  • @evilTitan73 Yes, he was quite breath-taking in most of his photos taken at the time. But the most important thing is he has great talent.

  • cool

  • Merle Haggard virtually OWNS this song!

  • go suck a cold peice of meat u pole smokin bastards

  • Merle always has it right, and really, I couldn't sing a song better about my own self. My mama tried. :)

  • Among other things, the lick at the begining is considered an all-time classic. Merle Haggard is unserpassable.

  • I really wish someone would post "Union Station" and "The Silver Ghost".

  • merle is country with attitude

  • Cool mini solo. I like the singin' from the porch too. : )

  • Great song.Great writer.Great performer.

  • Maybe this is a very simple video clip but have something that you want to watch it all the time....

  • this just brought tears to my eyes.brings back good memorys

  • I grew up in Georgia listenin to everything but country. Never really enjoyed it, till i got in the Corps then i couldn't stand music that wasn't real i.e. every rap song that talks bentleys, benjamin's, and bitches or alt rock talkin about some super natural love. Then I heard this and fell in love whith outlaw country. Im sorry but there's alot more poor southern white boys doing life without for some durkin violence then inter-city youth going from welfare to riches. Mama tried = real life

  • @OneManShow604 yeah well unfortunatly the pop radios like the to play the trash from every genre

  • @OneManShow604 it's not just mainstream rap that isn't real....everything mainstream isn't real and only exists to make money. if you want to hear good hip hop, you listen to underground shit....the same goes with all other genres.

  • @OneManShow604 i bet you're a nigger. if not, then you were a vanilla ice white boy bastard. if u are a serviceman now i forgive u for being a white boy wanting to be a nigger. if you r a nigger in the corp, i'll be right BEHIND u all the way.

  • Wonder how many Momas have been in those shoes????????

  • @jnjgoss48 all of them!

  • That famous telecaster meow meow riff.

  • Great Voice, miss this era of music.

  • i loved when this song was in the strangers :)

  • this is my song i was in prison for 8 yearsflat for cocaine and i made some bad choices in my life and was 19 when went down...now im older and realize that prison is not a place i would wish on my worst enemy to go...i lost 8 years of my life over drugs so im not trying to tell all drug addicts to quit sellingor using but im just informing its not worth the time in prison ill telleveryone that uses or deals its a minimum of 5 years for dope...and trust me its been long hard and depressing 8 yrs

  • these are the wounderful saongs I grew up with! love them!

  • Holy shit Merle was a sexy sombich back in the day. Love ya Merle, grew up on this shit.

  • Merle Haggard is so handsome here and I just love his singing!

  • perfect example of great soloing that didnt have to be overly complicated...great song

  • Love his facial expressions.

  • One of the greatest songs ever

  • Youtube... where people argue about fucking politics on a video that has nothing to with politics.

OHMYGAWD IMA GO ARGHUE OHN TEH INNTRENET! whatever makes you guys feel fucking special i guess

  • I wanna sit out on that ol' porch with Merle...
