To all those who think this is a different version it half true. It is the same as the released version only it is in its work in progress stage. Already edited down to from the 8 minute multitrack but with a rough remix and a later aborted vocal attempt.
This is the real, real " Gimme Shelter." Thanks for posting. This one has the knife- edge quality, a visceral shout-out. This is quintessential Stones of the era, more raw. Things got grittier as the Sixties progressed and this version reflects that.
This is the version with the bass in the forefront. There is a version where Keith Richards sings lead. The final cut has Merry Clayton doing a duet with Mick which was only released in album format. It was more of a compilation or assemblage because The Stones did their recording in London and Clayton did her recording in Los Angeles. So the final cut has a little different wording to accommodate the duet flavor. For example, near the end when Merry hits a high note "murder", Mick shouts "whoo".
All I hear is sniper fire and flash grenades in choke points that I and my team can take down with a combination of RPGs and a noob-style rush for the melee kill.
This take was recorded on March 15, 1969. Merry Clayton's vocal and Nicky Hopkins's piano were added to the song on October 17, 1969. Mick's distorted harmonica solo is present on both takes.
@ClassicTVMan81@ClassicTVMan81 I always liked Mick's distorted harmonica on Gimme Shelter. It puts an extra feel of threathing to it. Amazing how many classic songs Mick & Keith wrote during 1968-69!
Grittier, harder hitting. First two bars of bass are different. Mick's vocal is double tracked throughout. There's a Keith lead vocal version with very much the same delivery.
the bass in the intro is so good...wow! that little 20 second bit at the start is BETTER than the finished version - something i never thought i'd hear myself say!
I've read got the inspiration for the riff to Gimmie Shelter after watching an episode of the Twilight Zone. You can sort of hear it if you really listen to it.

How many different clip of this song are out there? They show how Gimme Shelter evolved from an idea to music.
rivgmiera 6 months ago
THere is some LFO modulation on the vocal, probably a Leslie rotary speaker that makes it sound extremely creepy.

Miss those background vocals...always gives me the chills when she screams.

totally awesome version, but can anyone authenticate that it is the vocals of mick and Kieth? or a vocal dub over by another band?
either way it is great, but sure would like to know!

I'm pretty sure Mick starts off, but then Keith does sing a few lines in it.

Sounds good, but the Let It Bleed one is still the best one. Merry Clayton is sinister.

omg i think i prefer this version to the original one...
it's heavier, tougher, colder, really like an ancestor of hard rock...and addictive
haha i knew these guys were geniuses but we have another proof of it!
kornofulgur 2 years ago 16
micks voice has been dubbed over the original..... its obvious, two songs together.
hahaha all you suckers have fallen for it

hahaha yeah just an overdub....with a different bass line, guitar line, harmonica, different mixing ect...

this is definitely not the original. it came before that. so no suckers here.

The studio version features Keith on both lead and rhythm guitars. Mick Taylor played on only two songs on that album, Country Honk and Live With Me.
