This 1969 Back in Memphis album was great and was Elvis's last inspired recording sessions. Recorded at a small studio in a seedy part of Memphis, Elvis got back on track- at least temporarily. After this great album the Colonel intervened because he thought the songwriters were getting too much royalties. So it was back to the lame RCA Nashville studio and rather uninspired songs from then on.

Listen to Bill Haley & Big Joe Turner sing Shake Rattle & Roll. Neither wrote the song..both are infusing their own style into it. Think of the song as a canvas. Neither of their styles was going to set the world on fire & start a revolution. Bill's is a POP feel. Big Joe's more BLUESY. Now E's...E's mania & unique genre fusion made the "rock" sound.
