Comparating this film with E.L.Doctorow's book I think that was a very good adaptation. Although I think that Mandy Patinkin wasn't a very good choice for the part of Daniel's father. Especially in this scene. Great acting by Mr. Asner!
@SuperRod88 This is the role Ed Asner was made for. Look at his own history, and his own problems with the HUAAC. Would you beleive I once got to talk to Mr. Doctorow himself. Someone asked him if he was satisfied with Billy Bathgate. I asked him if he was satisfied with Daniel. His face lit up, he said yes, and Syndey Lumet really went out to stay as true to the book as he could. Problem was, movie was released same week Soviets shotdown Korean Airliner 007, nobody wanted to see it.
@Dreaded88 Doctorow himself wrote the screenplay of Daniel, that's why it gets so close to the book. Thanks for sharing the information about the time of the movie's release coinciding with the tragic shotdown. I've never made this connection before and that's why is such a underapreciated film. Sad but truth.
In his novel about the Rosenberg case, "The Implosion Conspiracy', author Louis Nizer cited a situation where Robby Rosenberg (the younger son), during a visit to see his parents at Sing Sing Prison asked, "Can we go see the electric chair?" A long pause followed amongst all in the room, guards included. A subsequent letter from Ethel Rosenberg to Julius stated, "if we are asked about the method of death, we shall tell the children, painless electrocution"
