  • slippydogg, that's funny, and true.

  • Awesome early performance. Thank you for the dope post!

  • Bummer that this is a lip-synch of the album cut. I was excited to see it done live. Such a great tune, though, and Nielsen's hilarious and creatively timed antics make up for it. Is there a live version out there?

  • @pgrens Yes from 1980.

  • @pgrens they change there setlist every other shjow and they played it this summer 2 dates after i saw them i believe

  • Wow, this is the original? It's good, I was listening to Big Black's version earlier thinking, "This is wayyy too tuneful to have been written by Steve Albini"

  • I was EXTREMELY fortunate to see Cheap Trick perform this & the entire 1st album when they were first starting out at The Paradise in Boston where I live. Plus, I was directly against the stage. Have ALL their 'stuff' and have seen them MANY times, but I have to say the 1st album IS their Masterpiece.

  • Love cheap trick, check out my video for Auf Wiedersehen youtube.com/watch?v=gmm3V1IWdJY&feature=related

  • I really wish Cheap Trick had continued in the style of their first two albums. Oh well, I still like the poppy-er stuff from time to time, but this was my favorite record by them. Self titled I believe.

  • @Splimis Agree with you 110% !!!

  • Thank heaven for 1970's tight pants

  • me too....

  • This pings LOUD. Either come out already or fess up to trading on the ambiguity.

  • This is the tour I saw them booed off the stage opening for KISS. I immedeatly went out and bought all their albums (2) and they have been one of my favorite bands every since. And they still rock!

  • This is awesome! I think it's a lip sync actually, sounds just completely exactly like the album cut. But still, great!

  • when they came out it awsome extreem pop rock , i saw them 7 time and lve it

  • Really Cool. I Was There That Night.

  • Awesome - there is no other word.

  • Thanks to Big Black I actually like some Cheap Trick. For those who don't know... look up Big Black "He's A Whore" ... it emphasizes the power of this song 10 years later after Cheap Trick got all popped out. Big Black's lead singer is Steve Albini. He produced bands like Iggy Pop, Sonic Youth, the Pixies and Nirvana to name some bands you may recognize.

  • @drfred1203 RE: "Thanks to Big Black I actually like some Cheap Trick..." What are you, a 12-year-old kid? If you're serious about music, gotta go back to the core, not the latter-day covers.

  • @8angst8 a 12 y/o? flmao. I never liked this kind of music growing up and was expressing that I liked this song. I also introduced another band that people who are looking for something different may find interesting as well. You didn't do that. You had a chance to say ... well, if you liked that then you should try this song or band... but instead you spew off at the mouth and talk offensively to me. WTF?

  • @drfred1203

And he produced Cheap Trick too. I was very sad they didn't play this the other night when I went to see them play.

  • @MrConorLumsden

    Albini doesn't "produce"...he is an "engineer."...and a "whore." NATCH. :)

  • @metull666

Albini is definitely a producer, he just doesn't like the term.

  • This KICKS SO much ASS!! Showing that they WERE a HEAVY ROCK BAND in the 1st release,.......power poppy soupy after that.......

  • Best American hard rock album of the '70s? Probably. The best Aerosmith albums and this monster? Jack Douglas should be proud. A Thunderbird bass in the hands of Tom is a beautiful thing indeed.

  • whoever is the 1 dislike needs to be punched in the face...

  • @mikeuriah80 Ha ha but he IS a whore. :)

  • Are they even playing or was this on a TV appearance with them lipsynching? The guitarist is fucking around so much looks like they are playing with a backing track or something.

  • @TheReadyMen i can tell you haven't really seen any cheap trick footage before the guitarist is Rick Neilson he is the definition of awesome and actuality he is actually pretty calm during that he is just wild live

  • @TheFlimflamy

No, I checked this out because of the Big Black cover. I can see the guy probably acts like that normally as you say, and I've seen guitarists like that before. However, it looks like at points when he is acting silly and not actually strumming his guitar, you can still hear the guitar being played. That is why it was leading me to believe that this was a TV appearance where they were using a backing track. If it was, it would be nothing negative to the band....

  • @TheReadyMen Oh ya i kinda see that to now but almost all bands used the backtrack for tv.

  • Comment removed

  • ...during the 70s and even into 80s and 90s some TV shows would force a band to use a backing track and mime along for their performances. A lot of times they didn't have a choice. Not saying that is for certain the case here, I could be wrong. It just looks like there is still guitar notes being played when Neilson is not actually strumming them. Hell, I've even seen some bands rebel against that trend by making the miming obvious, which could be what he is doing here. Great song anyway tho.

  • Listen Radio Música para Mimos. The Best Songs of Love . Its Great .!!! (search in Google)

  • Damian West is a bender

  • robin you may be a whore but you're MY whore baby!!

  • @mikeuriah80 Nothing Vince does is of any value.

  • He is a whore, an a good one too! ;)

  • It's so cool to see footage of the guys performing "He's A Whore". I've heard it on "Found All The Parts" but never saw the video. AWESOME!

  • ON 1977.......

  • Definitely Night Gallery (Park City, IL). Saw them there several times and one great show w/ a band called Hot Mama Silver.

  • Did you guys mean NIGHT FLIGHT? I think NIGHT GALLERY was the show Rod Serling did after "Twilight Zone"... Night Flight was more the type of show that would have this greatness involved with it. Rock on Milwaukee!

  • What a Heart throb he was for us back in the day :D

  • @mikeuriah80 his version blows

  • @kevinocooldaddy you would know... whore.

  • @boardskins not really. Did I hurt your feelings?? Get some thicker skin wimp

  • @mikeuriah80 I thought Vince Neil's version was pretty damn good too!

  • @BubbleSheep Sorry. Don't agree. But I respect your opinion of that JERK.

  • my favorite cheap trick song

  • Great "rock&roll" requires several elements to merge... obviously you need the "tune" (kinda critical) but you also need the "chops" (skill) and then you got the extras- some style, some "theater", some humor, good looks don't hurt, and then you need a little bit of "luck" too. This song is clearly all of the above, and while it is clearly not "Punk"... it hints that CT were aware of it. Another fantastic song (just one of about 50) by a band that deserves more credit than they get.

  • Tom Petersson is the epitome of sexy!!!

  • true, olle

first time i heard the "I'm not gonna crack'"line at the end of Lithium, i thought "sounds just like Robin Zander"

  • I always enjoy watching Rick playing. He reminds me of Huntz Hall from the old Bowery Boys films.

  • @daven58100 Wow, thought I was the only one on the planet who made that connection. I didn't think that anyone even remembered The Bowery Boys. I'm only in my late 30s, but I recall watching those films when I was a kid. When I first saw Rick, I thought he was parodying Huntz

  • In response to those arguing as to whether they're hearing Tom's bass or Rick's guitar, don't go by the video evidence- they are just fake playing along to the recording from the album.

  • Cheap Trick appearing at SXSW March 19th, Austin, Tx

  • OK 1:12

  • haha - yeah this is definitely NOT the version that appears on the record. Could be either a post production touch-up or lip-synch to another version.

  • Maybe the original live audio has been replaced with studio recordings. All these "Night Gallery" videos are without a doubt studio recordings.

  • I've listened to the album too many times to think this is live. It's obviously lipsynched. I saw them live during this tour. They were not as commercial as they are now. They were very spontanious. They didn't do exact live recreations of their recordings. This must have been made for a television show . You can tell by the way the song ends it's the studio recording. Having an acual audience doesn't mean it was live either.

  • Love it when Robin screams, 'I'm a whore!' LOL

  • This is 1977--so how hard these MFR's rock.

  • Does anyone know where i can find the wax version of this soneg, they perfomed it ib the movie biodome

  • My friends dad looks just like Bun E Carlos...

  • Fantastic... world's must underrated band!

  • every amp and guitar in this video is now worth a fortune.

  • He actually has a great voice... no wonder Cobain hooked up on it.....

  • What a song . . what a band . . .

  • it's lip synched.........very obvious, you can even hear all the studio overdubs

  • Who cares. This is the one and only instance in which I don't mind saying that.

  • Ever heard of eh, a promotional music video?

  • This was shot at Night Gallery, a club in IL. It's a real performance, no lip syncing.

  • not true Sun. , this is a playback

  • @abebg. What makes you think it's not a real performance?

  • Just listen to the track in the original album, it is 100% similar

  • @abebg The album and this video do not sound 100% similar especially, the backing vocals. Some shows required CT to lip sync. When CT did lip syncing Rick and Tom sang, no where near the mike, lol. In other Night Gallery videos, there are shots of the audience and band. This looks like a real performance.

  • i still think this is a playback, just look at Nielsen letting off his guitar playing while the original guitar is being heard.

    (1.15 min)

  • I thought that was Tom playing that bit or a touch up.

  • Hey ablebg ...look at 1:14 hes not even touching his Guitar.

  • Some people don't realize, it's Tom playing bass, when they hear a guitar and Rick is not touching his guitar.

  • Not trying to be rude, sun but I have played guitar for over 15 years. My band covered this song and that is not Bass Im hearing. Peace.

  • Not trying to be rude either but, many mistake Tom's bass for Rick's guitar.

  • @wetwithlife

If you look at the beginning of Auf Wiedersein live that feebacky part at the beginning that sounds like a guitar is actually Peterson playing bass. He plays it like a guitar in many cases. Check it out.

  • they almost sound like they are lip synching but i think robin zander is so good that he sounds good every time

  • You can't improve on the vocal and instrument virtuosity of this band.....all cover bands of Cheap Trick will be less than satisfying.

  • listen to hes a whore by big black then re think that assessment

  • Are you nuts?! I love Big Black and Steve Albini but, they had a drum machine named Roland. Cheap Trick not only has a real drummer, Bun is one of the best drummers in rock. Robin's vocals kick the chit out of Big Black's singer! Not even close, lol. Big Black's version is cool but, it's in no way close to being as good at Trick's.

  • Can Big Black cover Mondicello? Me think not.

  • Awesome. This is one of Cheap Trick's finest moments.

  • Comment removed

  • Wow, Robin looks like Rod Stewart here. I'm glad the band is adding this old stuff to the channel. Much appreciated! Makes me sooooo nostalgic! :)

  • both versions (original and Big Black) are great

  • That was part of what made Cheap Trick stand out. They had a couple pretty boys in the band but they also had a goofball like Rick and a drummer who looked like a high school teacher or Burger king manager. But they also kicked ass live. The bands now on MTV are all pretty boys who all look the same sound the same and can't play for shit live.

  • LOL! "Burger King manager"! So true...

  • Actually, I've always thought of Bun E Carlos as looking like my brother, which is literally true. My brother Frank for many years had similar facial hair and glasses, and also smokes. LOL

  • I know Robin was the "pretty" one of the group (exceptional singer!) but my fave was always Tom!

  • Ooh, but Tommy was pretty too!

  • Yes! Tom was gorgeous!

  • One of the best rock songs ever recorded.

  • this song is so awesome!

  • awesome!

    One of my fave songs!

  • look up BIG BLACK HES A WHORE

  • I have the 7"! Love how they dressed up like C.T. for the photo on the cover.

  • Sucks compared to the original. However, I do like their version of "The Model".

  • i think so too but i do love big black , albini recorded cheap trick in the 90s , nice cats close yer blinds , there was a guy lookin in at you

  • i never heard this song before.i was a pretty big trickster back in the day

  • One of my favorite CT tunes!

  • Does anyone else think this kinda sounds like "The KKK took my baby away"?

  • Yeah! It does!

  • Despite any moron giving the thumbs down to these comments,it's been documented that Joey Ramone had been listening a lot to this Cheaptrick tune right before writing "KKK".

  • I heard this before 'KKK' so it's vice versa.

  • Well, I'm not talking about you or from any fan perspective.. Many Cheap trick/Ramones fans possibly have heard this song before "KKK".

I was only referring to liner notes about Joey Ramone being influenced by the music of this song. It isn't something I made up. Obviously, other fans here have ears and noticed the similarities w/ out the notes.

  • I can definitely hear the stacatto-rhythm in the verses as the same in KKK.

Never had thought about it before until I read these comments on it.Thanks!

  • It's 1977 , and Rick already has a small army of guitars on stage!

  • they would arrive at this shady club in a limo we would laff cuz it all seemed so contrived. robin was quite shy mostly stood next to the doorman paul krupa

  • I LOOOOOVE Robin!!

  • the kkk took my baby away...

  • They played small venues in Illinois in 1970's. Wow, it was unbelievable. They kinda went out of "play" for a while, but I think Billy C. revived their popularity a bit. Always the biggest, most loved band here in Illinois -especially Rockford/Central Illinois.

  • What a great find from the CT vault!!

  • Robin must've been like 19 here

He's cute, but the hair's a bit dolly here, it's better when it's fuzzy,

and those pants are very tight indeed, still looks great!

  • so this lp came out in 1977 but this was filmed in 1975?

  • My favorite band of all time in their prime!

  • These guys changed my life.

  • Ha! Robin always had long hair but this is like weird!

  • Yes, trousers of that ilk were quite form fitting in the crotch/buttock areas.

  • My goodness Mr Z, nice tight pants.

  • Cheap Trick IS the shit..... :-)

  • Power Pop + Rock N Roll = Cheap Trick. Still rockin after all these years !!
