I was there: 3rd row dead center after sleeping overnight (3rd in line!) for it. Was THE BEST sporting event I've ever been to (the other win over UNLV is up there.) I'm still hoarse from yelling so loud...we crushed those thugs!
Carrick DeHart was a great Gaucho, mentor and coach and those of us at the Eastside Boys Club in Santa Barbara remember his time spent with us playing and teaching Bball. Dwayne Austin
One of the best times of my life. I had student tickets and was one of the bodypaint crowd. I remember having a migraine from yelling so much and my favorite memory was when Butler blocked Freeze and started waving his finger at the crowd. The next possession Freeze sent his shot into the stands and we LOST IT.
Carrick DeHart and Eric McArthur were/are two of the best players in the UCSB history. As someone else mentioned, Brian Shaw is another. That UNLV team (and their next one as well) was really f-ing good so to beat them was impressive.
One of the best sports memories in my life! Tark sucking n his towel! Gaucho Joe rallying the crowd! It was amazing beating THAT UNLV team after losing to them so many times over the years in the Big West!
I lived on Abrego in Isla Vista and missed this game because I thought we'd be blown out. I'll never live it down by my friends who didn't miss the game 15 years ago....
Macarthur is one of the best UCSB players ever. Not sure but I think he was drafted by the NBA Celtics but never made a lasting impression in the pros--maybe in Europe.
Was there ever a post player who got the most from his height in the Big West like Eric McArthur. A 6-7 post player averaging 13.4 rebs., are you kidding me? His wingspan must have been 7 feet plus.
@sportsoracle - Gerald Madkins played for UCLA, but I think he was the biggest "small amn" ever. At 6-5 he played out of his mind on defense. He went on to play for the Celtics, but never made an impression.
It only shows how INSANELY good you have to be to be a pro, because no one scored on Madkins in four years.
Oh the Thunderdome. My dad took me to a game down there and that crowd was INSANE. Funny thing was, Fresno State (my alma mater) stayed with them that night, but Brian Shaw was too much. I remember being allowed to stay up to see this game. What a great crowd.
Back then it was TP not tortillas. I worked for the KCSB at the time in the sports department, and later did the public address for the games after I graduated, so I saw a little of both.
Carrick Dehart is my coach And everything that he teaches me is just AMAZING. He is a very well balanced man and coach and he knows the game very well. I HOPE THAT HE WILL TEACH ME THE GAME LIKE HE KNOWS IT. I LOVE THE GAUCHOS!!!!!!!!!
I think that we through dimes onto the floor after the first basket because a couple of weeks prior the rebels tore up some hotel rooms and ran up a lot of phone charges. This was back when phone calls cost a dime. We always started the game with a Technical.
This game was amazing; Vegas was the favorite and we destroyed them. After this, UNLV went on to something like 33 straight wins and a national championship. After the win there were couches and dumpsters burning.
Wasnt that the year that Tark lost his job due to allegations of cheating and the year the Miurage was built and 4 of the players (Hunt, Johnson, and two others0 were snapped by a photographer in a Mirage rooftop jacuzzi with "Richie the Fixer"? Oh yea..that was it, wasnt it? Wasnt UNLV a 7 point favorite, too? Hmmmm.
I thought UCSB used to throw TP on the court at the beginning of every game. Maybe I'm crazy. I was only 9 or so at the time, but I remember one of the schools in the Big West used to TP the floor whenever they scored the first bucket against UNLV.
When we beat UNLV in 1988 we TP'd the court after the first basket. That was my freshman year and I was there. I didn't go to this game, and I can't remmber what was thrown.
This game meant way more for UCSB. UNLV were monsters in the NCAA at the time. They had Larry Johnson, Stacey Augmon, and Greg Anthoney. That's like UCSB now beating UNC or DUKE. AMAZING. Thanks for posting this video man.
Let me clarify my last comment. All I meant was that most of the great times at the Thunderdome was in the late 80's not early 90's. 1990 WAS great. The only year that we actually won an ncaa game (against Houston) and then lost to #1 Michigan State in the second round.
It was great being there during that time. Great memories watching this video.
WOW!!! as a current student it is awsome to see the Thunderdome in its glory days, in its full capacity... I have always heard of those early 90's games and glad to see this video..Thanks

Losing to UCSB might have been the best thing for UNLV that year, they didn't lose after that.
