Yes, he is employing the beginner's most common method to solve the cube, but the idea being conveyed is that he can solve one based off intuition, and not by merely memorizing a set of algorithms (as all of you are). This intuition is meant to be indicative of his intelligence and - perhaps - his ability to succeed on the Street.

By today's standards yes I guess I was homeless. But I never thought that I was. It turns out years later I found out what the criteria was and yes I guess it was me. As far as the cube I can take it apart and put it back together in 5 minutes. Yes it was an inspirational movie. I liked the part when he told his kid to never let anyone tell him he can't do something. Determination and desire is everything. Like The Rocky speech.
