@shinnob Looking into someones eyes also lets them know you are confident. If you look away it's kind of a sign of weakness, like you're not confident about something or content with who you are. Body language makes a difference on the way ppl perceive you. I was raised with that belief that you should always look people in the eyes when they speak to you, it also shows that you're paying attention to what they're saying; some people feel ignored if ur looking elsewhere.

Traditionally, the act of staring someone straight in the eyes was considered an act of hostility and/or defiance in many Native American nations. @KamidakeRed You know, I do have Native American in my blood. It runs all through my family on both sides. I live on Cherokee ground and just an hour outside of Cherokee, North Carolina. The only reason I consider myself white first is because my culture mostly revolves around it. And no, my family has grown up growing their own vegetables....and we still do!

My family is mixed blood. A few years ago, I traveled to Alaska on business. I ate dinner at a nice restaurant. I wore my hair in two braids with feathers & hair ties, and turquoise & silver jewelry. Some of the patrons stared at me. Also, the service could have been much better. I looked around, and there were no Native Alaskans. I never went back. Later, I talked with a Mohawk friend who understood my frustration. People stupidly cling to stereotypes as if their lives depend upon them.

Did it ever occur that the store clerk at the clothing store was MAYBE just having a bad day? Perhaps she was sick/tired, stressed out, or something even worse. @shinnob Looking into someones eyes also lets them know you are confident. If you look away it's kind of a sign of weakness, like you're not confident about something or content with who you are. Body language makes a difference on the way ppl perceive you. I was raised with that belief that you should always look people in the eyes when they speak to you, it also shows that you're paying attention to what they're saying; some people feel ignored if ur looking elsewhere.

Traditionally, the act of staring someone straight in the eyes was considered an act of hostility and/or defiance in many Native American nations. Many of us have to practice staring people in the eye only because we were raised to be respectful of others and it is disrespectful to stare straight at someone.

There was a young man on a talk show, I think it was the Phil Donahue show, yrs ago, who claimed he was native American. He was lying, he was half black and Native American,but he didn't claim the black pt. I've noticed that black people hate themselves esp. the men because they were born black. @KamidakeRed You know, I do have Native American in my blood. It runs all through my family on both sides. I live on Cherokee ground and just an hour outside of Cherokee, North Carolina. The only reason I consider myself white first is because my culture mostly revolves around it. And no, my family has grown up growing their own vegetables....and we still do!
We live off land just as you do, but maybe not to your extent.

We might be able to give a little education here. Before the "white man" came to North America our ancestors were 60 million strong, and the earth and our resources were pure and renewable. When Europeans arrived they brought destruction and disease with them, and reduced our numbers to just under 1 million. Let that sink in European ancestors killed 98.5% by disease and warfare. Imagine if we still had our 98.5% what we could have been capable of, instead Europeans thought they were right.

My family is mixed blood. A few years ago, I traveled to Alaska on business. I ate dinner at a nice restaurant. I wore my hair in two braids with feathers & hair ties, and turquoise & silver jewelry. Some of the patrons stared at me. Also, the service could have been much better. I looked around, and there were no Native Alaskans. I never went back. Later, I talked with a Mohawk friend who understood my frustration. People stupidly cling to stereotypes as if their lives depend upon them.

It can be the other way around too. I am Diné, but my mother is white and I live in the OC of California.
Anyway, when I go to the res they tell me I'm not Diné and they seem to despise me. Now it's getting better though I'm more involved in my culture and I view myself as full Diné and as a full human being.

Did it ever occur that the store clerk at the clothing store was MAYBE just having a bad day? Perhaps she was sick/tired, stressed out, or something even worse. AND GOD FORBID SHE SHOWS YOU THE SALE ITEMS! That's what they're SUPPOSED to do, show customers stuff that is on sale because they want to get rid of it so they can bring out the new clothes. I've had to deal with a shitty store clerk before, and I didn't get to do a documentary on it. Get over it, boo hoo :)

Unfortunately, that will sometimes be the case. But when you have lived your entire life with 20/25 whites treating you in a stereotypical manner, then it is difficult not to assume the other 5 are the same way. Maybe it isn't right, but we can't take this 'get over it' attitude when racism is still so strong. People are not going to 'get over' being mistreated when it is still a way of life for them.

I play lacrosse at my school which is mostly white. One of the terms that they use is Tomahawking, it means illegal stick checking. After a while the coach stopped using this term, out of respect and I thank him for that.

Only 15% of the pouplation is of native american deccent and 80% is african. In cuba taino are only 33% of the populatoin. i live it every day the looks and treat me like a crook and have you lay the money on the counter and they drop your change so you have to pick it up
