@ramqen951 Not sure there are any "better" singers than Margaret Barry! Sings like a bird. But sings very differrently to what we're used to in "folk singing" these days, and of course totally differently to either classical or pop singers. I think there's something very archaic about her whole approach, she seems to be following a different pulse that we don't know about, especially when she sings The Flower Of Sweet Strabane (unbelievably lovely).
@194jerry hi there this is an easy explanation of the way she sings is that she is simply an irish traveller as the way she sings is so natural and the only pusle she is following is the life on the road as a traveller right from the heart.
@simon39825 Simon, that sounds romantic and sentimental & is not what I meant at all! I can't express it clearly, but she seems to sing with a rhythm and phrasing that is subtly different from the way ANY of the other singers do it. And that's even more apparent when she sings The Flower Of Sweet Strabane which I can't find by her on YouTube. But see how differently she does The Galway Shawl to anyone else. A favourite singer of mine.
@194jerry jerry i did'nt say that for it to be romantic or sentimental i'm saying thats why she is a great singer and had a special tonala sound because she is from a irish traveller background, if she wasn't from a irish traveller background which has to be bred in you she woudn't be even half the singer? i am also putting together clips of margaret barry and i might have the song flower of sweet strabane if i do i will post it with the clip.
@simon39825 I take it back Simon, and apologise! Hope you can put up Flower of sweet Strabane, which was the one I first heard by MB about 15 years ago - and why I say she sings like a bird. Like Thomas McCarthy - have you heard him? - she just opens her throat and out comes this stream of vibrating notes hanging in the air totally unlike how showbiz people sing. Like a bird sings. Just wonderful.
@194jerry well jerry apologey accepted, i have just double checked on the flower of sweet strabane and i have it and will post it soon. Yes i know of Thomas McCarthy and we have performed together on stage ( as i myself am an irish traveller aswell ) if you check out my videos you can see me and my family as well as thomas on stage.
@simon39825 Ah! Just looked at your channel and see who you are - I saw you and your children at the Rowing Club in Whitby this year, in that afternoon concert with Tom and Jim Eldon - didn't realise it was you. Hope I'll get to see you and the family perform again Simon.

I've heard "better" singers singing this, but never one who could sing it better.

Charlotte Church? She'd shit her, wipe her arse on a hedgehog & pass on to the next gig in the next one horse town. Proper hardcore.
