  • There's a point where Hard is addictive, and fun, like Kaizo, and a point where it's repetetive puzzles and non-pumping music. I mean, this hack just becomes "Pick up this, to get this, to get that, to grab this, to get that, to get there, to press this, to jump here, to find this, to press this."

    This hack is still great, it's just... bipolar at parts. Fun+hard, or Boring/repeatetive+ and hard, or fun+easy.

    It has mood swings. Two minutes into a fun level, you could be in a item maze.

  • I kinda don't like hacks like this. Well, not all of the levels focus on atmosphere (in a Mario game) instead of the fun, but the majority of them seem like they do. I would much rather have fun with the regular graphics then stare at the same boring colored graphics for hours.

  • Sure are a lot of 'Fetch Quests' in this hack

  • Why is it that a highly prestigious hack, by some of the best SMWC has to offer and virtually EXPECT the player to use save states because of tedious back-tracking and harsh punishments for the slightest mistake!

  • About halfway through, I felt like telling the level designer "YES. WE GET IT. YOUR LEVEL IS VERY PRETTY. You DON'T need to make the level entirely too big and backtracky in order to get us to ~appreciate your artistic vision~. Just. . . make a level that would be fun even if the graphics were vanilla, and then let your gorgeous chocolate graphics speak for themselves."

  • World 3 is definitely the most disappointing world in this hack when it comes to length and puzzles. Unearthly Hollow was actually my least favorite level in this hack (which is sad, because I enjoyed Football Canyon, both by the same author).

    World 4 and 5, minus one particular level, quite impressed me though. I do hope the same will apply for the rest of the viewers.

  • So many whiny people. God forbid people making levels in this hack try to extend the life of the game. If this level wasn't so long, there wouldn't have been time to appreciated the atmosphere of the level. Not every level has to be 1-1.

    The problem people see with COLP's length is that it, much like many of TheGamer's levels is that it basically overstayed its welcome even in a level/map position where it's at through a multitude of ways. Unearthly Hollow lacked a midpoint that wasn't helped by enemies that blended with the scenery too much.

    Some people lack the ability on when to wrap it up.

  • @MrDeePay At least he was attempting something more than "Run Right, Jump Once in a While". It just seemed like people were being too hard on the guy for something that is both free and was done for free.

  • Compared to ASMT I don't like this hack, hell some of the levels in SMWCP make VIP look easy, I know the purpose of VIP is a bunch of bored Japanese 2ch users, but goodness. The quality in this hack isn't very high and as of now I'm not impressed by this collab hack. Oh well what can you do? It just seems like the levels weren't properly placed, some of these should be in later worlds in my opinion. I don't have a problem with hard hacks, but it didn't look like it was going to be hard at first.

  • @TheGuyWhoIsSitting though the difficulty curve in this hack is all over the place and some of the levels just seem cheap more so than hard. Though I suppose since people are apparently used to rewinding and save states that it's not a problem to them to have their levels like this, but still.

  • Say, Raocow, where does that pipe off to the side of the World 2 Castle lead? and will you ever beat that weird tetris minigame?

    The pipe beside Grinder Castle leads to Weeaboo Manor.

  • Be careful not to spend all your coins, Raocow. You should keep 2000 on hand so you can afford the spacesuit.

  • Peeps should really tell us when castles, ghost houses and fortresses have secret levels. Even the original SMW made that mistake.

  • Don't worry guys, World 3 is by far the worst...there's one W4 level that's a big fail as well...it gets better

  • One thing I don't like about this hack so far is that all the levels look washed out. It's an okay style occasionally, but Production just uses it too much.

  • Raocow, maybe the Cave of Lost Pride would've gone quicker if you beat TheGamer's Tetris game. That probably leads you to the room of the midpoint, so he put it there because the Tetris part was hard.

    The hell are you talking about. The Tetris room is way worse than the mole puzzle.

  • @SonicShadowPSF I'll explain it for you. Maybe the reason that TheGamer put the midpoint so far in the level is because that the other parts of the level (besides the Tetris part) are kinda easy. BUT, if you took the Tetris room and it led you to the midpoint room after you beat it, it would be a logical spot to put the midpoint.

  • @SonicShadowPSF Yeah, I guess that clears it up. However, I watched someone finish the Tetris part, and it actually DID end up at the midpoint room (after a pretty funny endless bonus game joke). So... whatever. As long as Raocow beat the level, I'm happy. XD

    After I saw the first seconds of the tetris room i said F this and went for the alternate path.

  • What's this hacks obsession of making the levels a flat palette that is hard on the eyes and very boring to look at? It also seems to have really depressing/droning music that gets rather repetitive. This hack gets a D.

  • I'm not enjoying this hack anymore. At first I was all "oh man I wanna play it too" but I despise convoluted "carry this around" "you can't see the enemies" or "long winded puzzles" themes. And this hack is made of them from the ground up.

    Makes me wanna kick the romhack community in the shins.

  • Wooo super-long levels with annoying music. I didn't mind the hidden enemies as much in this stage, because the colors were easier on the eyes. Gameplay was kinda annoying as well, though.

  • There is a secret exit to Unearthly Hollow; after getting out of the house, take a springboard to the end of the area, do not go in the pipe. The secret exit is on the other side of things.

  • I'm starting to get annoyed by this hack. The art is nice, sure, but that doesn't mean a damn thing if it's impossible to tell one enemy from another, or the foreground from the background, or even a spike ball from a hill.

    Cave of Lost Pride is a Yellow level. That implies there is no secret exit.

  • By the way, every ghost house has a secret exit, except for the ones in world 6 and 7 I think.

    Dunno if that's supposed to have stayed a surprise, but it's not that much of a spoiler, I guess. :/

  • Yep, you are right, in your design everything is clear, you can see without a problem what will kill you, as everything will kill you!

  • In an earlier version of this level you could not see the springboard above the first scarecrow. The level idea was much better before because now you know that you have to get the springboard from the beginning and the second message box is pointless.

  • raocow, you should go back to the tetris part on the cave of lost pride and show it off.

  • I dunno, Raocow, I've seen those levels where you let your "artistic" decisions override your gameplay ones, specifically the "minimalistic" levels where everything's a shadow and you use only two colors and stuff, and those levels look frustratingly impossible to play to me, because everything looks the same and it's impossible to make anything out.

  • @raocow I'm gonna have to say that those levels are so cool-looking that I couldn't be frustrated if I could make it to them in WTH, but they do look a bit hard to figure out.

  • You could totally defend it by saying minimalistic levels that make it impossible to tell whats what are bad and thus not good examples of a truely artistic level. The shadowed levels in Donkey Kong Country Returns are a good example of this. But I digress.
