Oh, and that's not hair for Lola. Those are wings. She mentions it on the online version. "It's really windy! Good thing I have my wings!" And I believe you're talking about the "Libera" tribe.
And yes, Arin's a magician, she went to the school Brie's principle of. She's not really an illusionist, I mean, you're on an island where Chrono Cross fairies rule... Arin and Brie do indeed have the same magic, Arin has powerful magic at her disposal, she just chooses to perform.
She just chooses to perform for people, because that's when she truly shines. She can't really fly, but that's because she wasn't born with magic in her blood like Brie or Tiki, who can fly on runes and brooms alone. Brie's also one of the "Ancient ones" who made the phoenix that was used to seal close the vent pouring darkness onto Pangya Island. So she's a bit more powerful than the other magicians...
This is the only game in the series I've actually played, so I don't know too much about the setting and characters.
The game itself is more than a little short on information when it comes to backstory, so really all I have to go on is the stuff from the manual, the in-game loading screens, and an occasional bit of the general characteristics for a particular character dropped here or there in the Tour mode.
Anthropologists distinguish the two different sorts of magic by calling the wizards-and-wizardry sort as "magic" or "sorcery" and the cards-and-pigeons sort as "illusionism." The difference between magicians and sorcerors is split even further in that magic is used for good and constructive purposes where sorcery is used for evil and destructive ends.
I'm glad Uncle Bob doesn't feel out of place being a gruff and muscular guy in an activity seemingly dominated by pretty girls.

Neat. That's a lot of extra explanation.

The PSP version has the most detail on character stories and such, give it a try.
And I figured the Wii version would be lacking in story, it mostly seems like an "Arcade" version.

.... On the online version of Pangya, Arin has earrings that allow her to suddenly burst wings from her back and fly.
