  • i will always remember you, but I cannot forget your fate. I know you would have given us so much more, had you been given time. Alas, alas. Rest in peace my brother.

  • hermoso...de verdad

  • Unübertroffen!

  • Великий талант!!! Покойся с миром!

  • Never EVER forget those who died for you, those who fought for you! regardless if straight Gay or whatever..the freedom we have today is mainly thanks to them!!!

  • @angel4justice1 Bullshit, they die for no reason, except the multinational Corporation!

  • Perfect!!

  • now I am sad

  • Remember me, but forget my fate...RIP, Klaus Nomi.

  • one kiss claus nomi kisses

  • You Tube is wonderful! I went from seeing this odd character as a flooke doing Lightening, to now knowing about an interesting artist who helped shape pop art into the 1980's. I have seen so much of his work now, and I am blessed to get to see so much in one place. Yay You Tube.

Klaus Nomi, you were very neat.

  • @nhpooooable Yes, I had the same experience! Was looking up something totally unrelated (just plain old lightning) and found that video. Put me off at first, but then started looking at his other stuff, and am now completely hooked. Funny!:)

  • Amazing.

  • Although sharp at times and not totally in control of his instrument, he most certainly reawakened the baroque style of countertenor. He's no David Daniels but I believe he was catering to a different crowd. Very moving.

  • I think they used the sound effects on the end of this track on a recent game called Limbo.

  • Ouch, so sharp. What's with the glowing reviews? This is painful.

  • @Ormaaj yes sharp, but a real love for the music.

  • He was genious... nothing more to say... . <3

  • Damn this almost made me cry, freaking unbelievable that voice.

  • Klaus Nomi was so beautiful and Mysterious, no other like him. R.I.P ♥

  • Superb. Lyrics are these: When I am laid, am laid in earth, may my wrongs create No trouble, no trouble in, in thy breast. When I am laid, am laid in earth, may my wrongs create No trouble, no trouble in, in thy breast. Remember me, remember me, but ah! Forget my fate. Remember me, but ah! Forget my fate. Remember me, remember me, but ah! Forget my fate. Remember me, but ah! Forget my fate.

  • Klaus Nomi gives me chills no matter which performance., Jeff Buckley's was nice, i just didnt enjoy it, seeing as i'm not used to his voice in that key. For me, it didnt work but he's an amazing talent too. Malena Ernman however, owns this song in Dido and Aeneas <3

  • This man was a genius , a true original. I really love his operatic interpretations, he woudln't work this days though . Purcell ? Shakespeare ? a man with an operatic voice?Culture has somewhat became taboo , we're stuck with rubbish

Throw in some autotune, a few videos hoes and you're good to go .

    Sad days... :(

  • Dido's Lament (Klaus' Lament) Recitative Thy hand, Belinda, darkness shades me, On thy bosom let me rest, More I would, but Death invades me; Death is now a welcome guest. Aria When I am laid, am laid in earth, May my wrongs create No trouble, no trouble in thy breast; Remember me, remember me, but ah! forget my fate. Remember me, but ah! forget my fate.
  • @videovixen71 Remember me, remember me, but ah! forget my fate. Remember me, but ah! forget my fate!

  • @videovixen71 The students' choir of my university performed "Dido and Aeneas" some 30 years ago. For Dido they employed a professional opera soprano. When she appeared at the dress rehearsal no-one of the choir had heard this aria before. She sang, "died" and the choir was meant to set in. Nothing- silence. All of them stayed mumb as a fish, overwhelmed with emotion. At the opening night they got it right.

  • @C21H23ClFNO2 DUMMkay, just translated your comment...wow. Don't know what to say about it. If what I read was accurate, than you my friend have a very strange way of showing affection because calling someone like our buddy Mark here a 'degenerate' isn't quite how we'd express support OR tolerance here in the states...doesn't add up. If I'm at fault here, than so be it,but I think others would agree that it's pretty self explanatory how you feel about someone when you use the term 'degenerate'.

  • Comment removed

  • @C21H23ClFNO2 you must know a thing or two about getting that cream filling YOURSELF for making such an ignorant, homophobic, self reflective statement. People like you are what make this world so rotten. You yourself must be an ugly, hate filled shell of an excuse for a human being to say something so blantantly disrespectful about the DECEASED...WAY TO GO,BIG MAN,WE'RE ALL VERY IMPRESSED WITH YOUR TROLLING. STOP BEING HATEFUL AND GET A FUCKING LIFE,HOMOPHOBE because YOU'RE the degenerate.

  • Well guys.... allthough not accompanied by a baroque emsemble, Klaus sings this classical piece in a distinct true way to the composer. He doesn't try to make it contemporary. His wish is to open the ears of that time to the classical simple beauty. His feet were planted in both the modern avantgarde and the classical music. This is exactly where he chose to be Folks.... Don't compare him to f.e. Buckley. Recognize his art and contributuon and rare talent.....

  • great voice- but he sings it too sharp to enjoy . sometimes vibrato just equals out of tune.... buckley and allison moyet do very interesting versions of this.

  • I READ DILDO's Lament

and think '' man, this guy is really a fucking genius ''

    :(

  • love nomi love this song - alright this could have been done better meaning more contemporary

but i think this might be close to the way it was performed when it was written

100s of years ago - and none of us were around i think...

  • Purely beautiful.

  • who are the 12, who don´t like this video?

  • At first I was happy because I found this song, but then I remembered he wasn't with us anymore :( Now I think I will go cry myself to sleep. I really hate this world sometimes.

  • Never mind if sometimes he is out of tune and if the orchestra is synthetic, his color is incredible and something "happened" when he sings unlike many "perfect"baroque singers..

  • if you hear the beauty the intention and the effort quit nit picking the song, , and klaus soars like a cloud of light that touches down at moments but still holds you there with it till it ends, jeff buckley took it to a gut level that was beautiful, so if youd rather listen to technical perfection thats up to you,,to me its the flaws that make a diamond sparkle better sometimes

  • Remarkable performance!

  • Like all his references to freemasonry in his dress and actions but i think its more of a piss take since idon't think out in open gays are wellcome members God this performance is glorious, just transports me to the heavenly planets

  • Absolutely nightmarish!

  • Quel personnage/voix exceptionnels !

  • He sings this peice better than anyone. Im no expert but I love uniqueness rather than technical perfection What a voice! He's singing with the angels now as their prima dona no doubt

  • Exquisite beyond words

  • @RattlingMurdock it blows my mind that your thumbs up count is 69

  • This version need peace, conformity and resignation.

  • Chills every time. Wishing he was around so we could see this performed live. Missing you, Klaus <3

  • Klaus can sing like a woman, yet way better than Justin Bieber... wtf.

  • what a master piece...

  • Klaus Nomi was a true master of the vocal arts i respect Him and hold Him in my gar icon and hereos i live for the day i can belt out love songs and tragedies like such a cute questioned proud Gay man and Baker

  • you're saying this guy was gay?!?!?!?!?!? i thought he was..ya know...all straight and shit...like rambo, arnold schwarzenigger, and AMERICA

  • He didn't die of AIDs

The Gods just wanted him back...

  • @ysbaddaden2003 What a lovely comment!

  • @ysbaddaden2003 That's right! They just needed an excuse so we'd never suspect! The Gods and Extra-Terrestrials - from the planet/Dimension he came from... probably the 25th! Who knows...!!! He is very high up there.. somewhere.. by 'very high' I mean high in a Dimension..!

  • @ysbaddaden2003 Such a beautiful soul.

  • actually it's not really his tuning' but his intonation that is off a hair.

Maestro Gunther Schuller pointed this out to Nomi and it was a source of regret to him not to have sung that better!

    [yes i knew him]

  • @okeyeye I noticed this much too. It isn't 100% technically perfect, but he was a rare natural talent.

Makes you wonder what he could have done if AIDS hadn't already done a number on his body and he'd had more time to refine his technique.

  • @Threetails Yes, when recording the album he was not always at peak strength or concentration, no doubt; + working with rockers more than classically-trained guys, no one seems to've noticed til the conductor

  • angelic voice

  • He took camp and flamboyance to unprecedented heights. But he could express such deep and genuine emotion that i have no choice but to break down and cry. A true artist and a tragic genius.

  • @C21H23ClFNO2 - No. I'm the only gay out of 90 cousins and 14 aunts/uncles, and only one uncle has AIDS from a blood transfusion after a car accident...

  • Too bad Klaus Nomi and Nina Hagen never did a duet.

  • @ysbaddaden2003

I didn't even think of that, but that would be the best thing ever. It's not too late, Hagan could do duet using one of his recordings.

  • 4:20 smoke weed erryday

  • klaus nomi rocks!!

    purcell rocks !!

  • And to think this was recording when he was losing his voice....

  • i read dad's dildo

  • I got goosebumps, this is so beautyful !

  • Nobody can sing this like Klaus. *sigh*

  • good music

  • so beautyful..

  • love that voice. klaus was an angel on earth - and now he is back in heaven

  • This is My Ultimate favourite!!! I love this SO much!

  • It's amazing how eclectic and varied Klaus Nomi was, now that I'm going further into his discography and that I hear this. Remember, this is the same person who did a cover of "Lightning Strikes" that was so silly the internet took it and used it as the new Rick Roll, lol.

Considering that he has already passed on, listening to this is a really haunting experience. It's as if his soul is singing to you from beyond his grave...

  • Great song, here is an other version from the german band Qntal:

    youtube.com/watch?v=KGKUhmwPR4g

  • Stunning aria. I can't get enough of Nomi doing Purcell. The chilling emotion in his voice is second to none. Honestly, I think this may even top his rendition of the Cold Song.

RIP, Klaus Nomi. The world lost a true artistic genius when it lost you.

  • no puede cantar asi!!! es hermoso!! que lastima que ya este muerto...me habria gustado verlo alguna vez :(

  • An opera singer with soul - whatever next?

  • Henry Purcell. Klaus "Nomi" Sperber, both died so young, amen.

  • I thought he died of aids. I could have sworn I heard th-

    Waitaminute...

    Well crafted trolling.

  • Me encantan las canciones de Klaus Nomi

  • un genioooooooo

  • It's a shame he died in that car crash. Rest in peace, Klaus Nomi.

  • @BoyfriendPenis he didnt die in a car accident

  • A wonderful piece but please also listen to Jeff Buckley's version which is another realm.

  • I agree. Buckley's version is less classically perfect, but very very soulful for sure! I just wish there was a better quality recording of his version available to be heard. The bootleg is the only one I've ever found.

  • @LutionStackridge Both Buckley and Nomi had trouble with the pitch... Buckley frequently has to slide to to proper pitch and Nomi frequently hits the pitch too high. Nomi has to be taken on his own terms, but ain't no doubt that Buckley has amazin soul.

  • @squeakymosquito you just can't compare them

  • @squeakymosquito True, the winedarksea version is pretty haunting too.

  • @squeakymosquito Jeff pulling off this song showed that he was possibly the most fearless musician of all-time.

  • @ericlord821 Madmen fear nothing.

  • @SpookyDaedalus

Actually it is you who are wrong. My description states clearly the facts about this song. It is a song titled "Death" and is from Nomi's 1982 album Simple Man. "Death" is Nomi's version of Dido's Lament from Purcell's opera Dido and Æneas. Nomi simply renamed the song and some quick youtube and wiki research would have given you the answers.

    Research is your friend. ;)

  • Ha ha, I loved the "Research is your friend :)" farewell, ha ha ha ha.

  • @SpookyDaedalus Listen to Dido & Aeneas and you will see...

  • I love to hear opera from klaus..so awesome

  • I've often suspected Æneas and Dido was the basis for some late legend writing of Lancelot and Elaine the Lily Maid of Astolat.

Once the French introduced their favorite character, Lancelot, who previously didn't exist in the legends, and seemed to be introduced only to make the Celtic king a cuckold, that was the beginning of the end of the Mater de Bretagne.

  • One of my favorite operas, when Dido jumps on the pyre, talk about tears!

  • Tears are streaming down my face...Klaus! we miss you and thank you for visiting here...you always inspired me so much with your beautiful voice! I loved your cookies too and trading recipes!

  • S-T-U-N-N-I-N-G

  • What an incredible voice! Thank you Klaus for this! We will never forget you!!

  • I believe he was really a good singer... but I just don't get to like his style...

  • Acabo de conocer a Klaus y me gusta, en esta cancion me recordo mucho a los castrati en pleno siglo 20 , el tono de voz... wow bebe molto bebe

  • Klaus was an angel perhaps tormented by inner demons. His otherworldliness may make you think of a cartoon villain. I don't see that. I see someone brave enough to totally be themselves, even if that set them apart. It sometimes takes the world awhile to recognise its rare flowers and how worthy they are of tending.

  • thank you klaus, rip

  • Inspired by hearing this version I listened to a lot of others available on youtube, and Klaus Nomi's is by far my absolute favourite!!! Thank you so much for posting. And thank you Klaus Nomi!

  • meh, people easily forget that aids is a lot easier to get from straight sex, at least when it comes to fluid transferral

  • Wow, i never even heard of Nomi until today, this is awsome

  • If Klaus Nomi ever played a Batman villain, which one would he be?

  • the music meister?

  • One that you were never really sure if they were a villain, or maybe something you didn't understand and needed to. A villain that made you think, in other words.

  • mouaii

c un mec ki chante ?

  • great! just great.

  • Despite of his appereance it's a shame that great talents died so young this is another great talent i just found.

  • he followed his Will until the end.

    93!

  • @yyyid - Why would I do that...?

  • he did not get aids from being gay he got it from

    not being safe.

  • @sineatersmith In his defence, and many other men and women of the era, it was a brand new disease back then. It is simple to scorn people for not being safe with hindsight.

  • @sineatersmith

One has to remember that nobody knew anything about AIDS. Even the doctors and professors studying it could not give a definitive answer as to how it was contracted. Police officers were given special mouthpieces to use if they ever had to perform CPR on a person so they would not have to make direct contact on someone with AIDs, in case of infection. We now know that one cannot catch AIDS from saliva, but they did not. The late 70's, early 80's meant everyone was clueless.

  • @yellowcougar18 technically, you can but it's very unlikely that the virus can be transmitted through saliva.

  • @VolkColopatrion

That would probably occur if someone had had dental surgery, an open sore in their mouth, or something which could cut the gums, something which could allow a tiny amount of blood to enter the system, and potentially pass on AIDS to their partner.

Even some foods such as potato chips, can make small, tiny cuts in ones mouth, so if they had AIDS, and were kissing someone, or providing other sexual services, they could infect their partner.

  • @yellowcougar18 I was commenting on the idea that there are low risk fluids.

  • @VolkColopatrion

And I was agreeing with you. But I was giving an explanation as to why the low risk fluids would be a risk.

  • @yellowcougar18 ah i see.

    it is unfortunate.

  • @sineatersmith the sad part is. no one knew. it's immature to consider sex taboo.

  • @sineatersmith I love you

  • wow..this is amazing...

  • Fantastic.

  • =*( , he experienced a tragic death

  • He was brilliant and so very talented.

  • to be fair, he was dying at the time he started to get serious with opera. the cold song when he sang it live this was really obvious. give him a brake if a few notes are wrong.

  • love!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This guy was remarkable!! I wonder why he died so young?

  • Comment removed

  • yes he was gay... but he didnt died cause he was gay! he died because he had AIDS. everyone on this world can died because AIDS

  • Very true man. I hope some people can also still value him as the remarkable artist he was and the influence he still has!

  • Important to note he was one of the first of celebrity status that contracted it. AIDS was still a huge mysterious unknown then, utterly devoid of treatment or knowledge of it's proportions and even precisely it's limits of contagiousness. Not to make light of it today, but it had to be particularly horrifying to be in one the shoes of it's initial victims. Those people were taken out fast, without hope. Unless you lived back then, it's hard to know the fearful grip AIDS had in early 80's.

  • TJC, thank you for this reminder of those terrible years - when death cut huge hideouis swaths through the afflicted communities. :*-(

  • @TheJediCharles TRUE. I lived through the entire epidemic. I don't have HIV/AIDS, but I lost many friends to it and the lack of knowledge or understanding left our community feeling confused and defenseless. We didn't KNOW how you got it, transmitted it, or why you died from it. Theories about it were everywhere. Young pple today have so much more info than we did, that it's hard for them to understand.

  • Thank you so much for posting this. Truly magnificent...

  • Most of the well gifted, not all of them, seem to die young. As if their souls suddenly realise...'Oophs, wrong planet, high time go to get outta here'....Damn, he might be (brillianty) singing out of tune...but then again, still the message of the song shines through...that is what separates the genius from the average human being. We think we know it all.

  • I've only recently begun to acquaint myself with Klaus Nomi's work. It is terribly tragic that such a great and talented artist and visionary was torn away from us so soon while he was so young. I like to think that he didn't so much die as he did go home.

  • grandiose.....

  • yeahh magnifique

  • yes Klaus was out of tune at times... he was also half dead and a man sining in the vocal range of a woman.... AND? Here it is over 20 years after his death and you/we are still listening to him... because he not only sang with emotion and at times perfectly, but he was a true original and innovative performance artist. All of you armchair critics who never had the balls and or talent to put yourselves out there shut the fuck up.

  • Fuck yeah!

  • Amen to that !!! And for that The Great Callas was out of tune sometimes But what an emotion !

  • Well said.

  • I love this aria, and I love Klaus Nomi, but either he was already very sick and his voice going, or he did it on purpose; he actually is out of tune many times, like he was overdoing the pathos and the tragedy willingly.

  • I wonder if he knew he was dying yet when he recorded this song?

They said in Nomi's Song that he was having to take a lot of injections to keep his voice going toward the end, but didn't say how long a period that was.

  • Poor Guy.... He died alone and forsaken...

    Such an amazing voice....

  • I've heard quite a few performances of this song, and I think his performance is the best one. It's true he's a little out of tune, but I find it an advantage, not a drawback of his interpretation! I think he did that on purpose. Thanks to a higher tune of his singing, the whole song sounds much more dramatic. Like if a lonely demon of death sung it, not a human. When you think about the fact he was recording this song actually awaiting his own death, it becomes one of the most touching songs.

  • Basically we are all waiting our deaths. It doesn't make a big difference if it is after 50 years or within 2 years?

  • I don't agree with you at all. Life is a precious and a beautiful thing, and we all should make as much of it as we can. Nomi knew he's dying when he was recording this. Yet he did not give up, and thanks to his strong will now we can enjoy his music. Respect for Nomi!! :)

  • @ hispula. There's a LOT of difference between knowing that you'll die someday and knowing more or less the exact date. Especially when it's due next month.

  • @kreich "@ hispula. There's a LOT of difference between knowing that you'll die someday and knowing more or less the exact date. Especially when it's due next month."

Not to mention death from Aids back then was especially horrific in the ways in which people actually died. Not going to go into detail on the gruesome subject, but if you do the research, it's pretty terrifying what AIDS victims went through. Sometimes it's hard to believe how people take it for granted.

  • @EccentricSage Such as?

  • This reminds me of Kathleen Ferrier's singing Mahler's "Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen", which was also performed in the face of her own death from breast cancer. I guess, the intensity and truthfulness of such artists in those truly tragic moments can't be surpassed . I bow to them!

  • Well, then he's brilliantly out of tune...most people who sing or play out of tune are really terrible to listen too...devastating to the eardrums...but Nomi's voice keeps sounding angelic...

  • Being "kinda out of tune" is like being "slightly pregnant." Either one is or one isn't.
