Speaking of bad games, and atari games that you needed a manual for, anyone ever have the misfortune of playing raiders of the lost ark for 2600? guess that covers bad movie game for the trifecta lol
She ended up just waving a bench in front of NPC's' faces, so I really didn't understand what's actually wrong with Harry Potter games? I have played through the first two ones on PC (which are different from console counterparts though) and I enjoyed them.
HEY I like bad games like Dr.Jeckyll and Mr.Hyde I like it, I also like Dick Tracy,Wrath of the black manta,Top Gun, Top gun the second mission, Ghost and Goblins and many more horrible games and most of them are nes and snes and I like horrible games
i've actually played and beat harry potter and the order of the phoenix....i thought it was enjoyable (i just had to put aside the fact that the game was barely following the movie) the fact that i could learn all these spells and explore hogwarts and interact with all the characters....that was good enough for me.
Remember 'You Can't Do That on Television'? That E.T. Atari commercial makes it look so hopeful. That Amagon dude is a spaz (he even seems overjoyed when he dies to death). 'The Immortal' is a good game (amazing that they could even port it to the NES) that's just really hard. 'Dr. Chaos' has a good story (with Lovecraftian undertones and references to horror movies) and is an interesting concept. Maybe it needs a modernized upgrade (like Bionic Commando). I always loved the box art.
Excellent video! It's so easy for people to verbally thrash poor quality games from decades ago but it takes guts to admit to that something you once loved was little more than a marketing scam. I totally get what Z is saying, I loved gaming so much when I was a little girl that discovering the truth - bad games exist - genuinely hurt. It still does sometimes.
@Bo6us yep. they did it because there were so many copies of such a bad game! the game had 1,000,000 copies, and normally atari games only have 300,000 copies, so they buried it to reduce there inventory.
Immortal wasn't bad, just really hard. It's kind of like Solstice with the whole isometric thing (plus the fact that you play as a wizard) but with graphics that push the limit of the NES. Dr. Chaos had some awesome box art (which is significant from a graphic design standpoint because it should grab the eye AND personify the vibe of the game -- like Berzerk). But what was the deal with that intenstine cat stabbing the dude in the foot?
@raptorinator Or bedrooms and living rooms texting, watching Bravo shows, Bachelor and Bachelorette, and spend time with friends creating relationships.
To be honest, I'm more likely to buy a game based on what it says on the cover instead of online reviews, since often online reviews underscore games I like (or vice versa). Besides, I come away with something new with each game I play.
irate gamer went all the way to new mexico from ohio to dig up a copy of ET. i live not fare from him so i know of this little game store at westbroad street and it was only a halfhour drive and yes they had ET there. i wish i knew of this place and of him at the time so i could tell him not to wast 2 mounths to review an atari game when it could of been done in like a half mounth he just wasted his time over a review i couldnt even comment on
@TheDoopliss2 Wait wait wait... Do you ACTUALLY believe he drove all the way to NM to dig up a copy of E.T.? That's just a myth, and even if it IS true, it was also paved over, so it would be impossible to get a copy beneath the earth.
lol I have t say Harry Potter games are good on the PC...thats really it. Also movie games are getting better like the Pirates of the Caribean games or the Starwars games....hehe the best games are LEGO GAMES!
@Lymee95 You n00b, Marathon, Halo, Fable, Metroid, and LoZ are way better. I will say that the Lego games are fun. But the new Indiana Jones one SUCKED and, I heard that the Harry Potter one was too easy.
Honestly, for an atari 2600 game, ET doesn't look that bad. When I was little and thought that Atari was the coolest thing (I like old stuff) I wanted it. And the graphics really aren't bad. I'd go as far as saying that they're good for a 2600 game.
I made the huge mistake of buying the 1st Harry Potter videogame for the PC and ironically is one of the games that I remember the most, sure it was... shitty. But again is the nostalgic factor that makes it "special" Of course NOW I know better, that all games based in movie are trash.
Atari would never trash the E.T. cartridges. Instead, they would do what Nintendo did to the RadarScope arcades and left-over Mario Paint boxes: recycle for later use. Nintendo reused the RadarScope arcades for the Donkey Kong arcades, while they sold MOTHER 2 in North America as EarthBound while packing them with a Nintendo Power Player's Guide in the left-over Mario Paint boxes. So it would of cost E.T. a lot of money to hire all those diggers and waste the cartridges they could of re-used.
Oh man... I finished ET also and thought I was the only one. Yeah bad games exist all over the place. The NES is a huge showcase for terrible games that we remembered fondly as kids... now they inspire WTF moments...
If opinions didn't matter, then even when we like something, we ought to shut up. I say, if someone doesn't like my opinion, let them try to persuade me if they like, but why should anyone try to control my words when they cannot control even their own?
6:11 Immortal is insanely hard! Amazing graphics for the NES, though. But then, I thought Shadowgate had amazing graphics back then. I used to play it just to get absorbed in the story.
if anyone cares..the cause of the video game crash of the 80's was the martial arts fighter games. It brought in a rougher more rowdy crowd into the arcades.
Makes me wonder if anyone ever found out the ending for such an awful game... Perhaps maybe even Contra might suck so bad if the Konami Code doesn't exist....
on one of the aqua teen hunger force dvd's if you listen to the commentary on one of the episodes , i forget which one, they talk about ET the game for Atari, supposedly they built so many of the cartridges and no one bought them that they had to buy land at a landfill and buried like a couple hundred thousand copies of Et for atari in the arizona desert, supposedtly they were gonna make an aqua teen episode based off of the ET video graveyard, and i think that's where the moononites came from.
I don't think people should label games as good or bad. When they talk about it, just list the facts. Even so-called 'positives' and 'negatives' are a matter of opinion. People should just say whether they liked it or not and if they say why, then it is OK. I never played E.T. so I have no right to say it is a bad game, even if everyone else does. I may or may not like it. I don't know until I play it.
@koisanjie First time I played it was in elementary when someone brought their Atari 2600 set in class with E.T. included, and I couldn't understand it without the instructions, so I quit playing it. I later saw it in the "Worst Games of All Time" episode of G4 Tech TV's Filter when they discussed about film-based titles. I later became aware of the '83 VG Crash and NM burials and decided to play it to see what many hate in it. I wasn't bothered by it. The tricky parts made me giggle with it.
@koisanjie Yeah, why don't you check out a shit sandwich, where there are two pieces of bread with a big smelly piece of shit in the middle. Then tell me, before you take a bite, whther you are going to enjoy that sandwich or not, or maybe you'll just stick to the concept of "not labelling good or bad, and trying it first before you make up your mind".
I kind of liked E.T when I got it, and I haven't played a Harry Potter game since the Philosopher's Stone for the PC, but I enjoyed that game quite a lot.
TommyCD1 i think you totaly misunderstood what Z is trying to tell us here... she is trying to tell us that when you dislike a game someone loves it so nobody cares what wikipedia says or whatever... and for me E.T. is damn creative for the short amount of time they had to program this game... and people should stop mocking at it.. there are way worse games around REALLY worse games but whatever... some of my facorit games are also listed as the worst games of all time but still love em
This review, CyricZ's featured review at GameFAQs and the facts that American video game companies overproducing with American's losing their interest in video gaming due to not understanding what makes a great game are probably the best supporters of the Atari 2600 version of E.T..
Movie games are much like anime games: most of them are like the GBA YuYu Hakusho game, but there are some hiiden gems out there, like Ultimate Muscle: Legends VS New Generation. I still play that game with my friends.
But Little Miss Gamer is right: you have to find the enjoyable parts in the game. Once you learn to overlook some things, that YuYu Hakusho game can be enjoyable.
But hell, Legends VS New Generation is a freakin' great game. Even with the 4Kids dub.
most of the harry potter games are ok, but the best ones are harry potter 3 for the gameboy advance ad harry potter 2 for the game boy color, you know the rpg ones?
the timeframe quoted in designing this game reminds me of the reason 2600 pac-man disappointed me so much. Paid 50$ I think for it.... wanted pac-man, but wow...
uhhhhhhhhhh i understand the 'not living up to expectations' aspect of nostalgia.
I went so far as to convert an entire room to cheap 70's woodgrain, orange/brown shag, 60s/70's furniture, zenith console TV (with upgraded innards), and I still couldn't quite recapture the magic of my woodgrain shag carpet basement. But it's still pretty sweet
Now that you mention it, I did play the hell out of the Harry Potter games. The earlier ones were better in general, I thought, especially the first two PC games. I guess I did put too much trust in my games then, because I thought most of them were good. Wonder what I'd think of them now?
E.T. for it's negative impact on gaming is the worst game ever released. As for the game itself though there is MUCH worse. Think of it this way. In the Atari days you couldn't screw up camera angles, slowdown, numerous glitches (any glitches could be found in testing rather easily back then), bad collision detection, terrible sound and so on. E.T. is just a boring game, it's not really irritating. I've played MANY games that have ticked me off more and I enjoyed WAY less than E.T.
ET in my opinion, is awkward but when you've got 6 weeks to make a game on a blockbuster movie, its not gonna be gold exactly. Besides, not ALL movie games are bad (The most recent good one being Wolverine) but most movie-games are just quick cash-ins without a lot of effort being put into it.
A similar thing happened when Gunpei Yokoi was forced by Nintendo to start releasing his prototype (or unfinished) 3D Boy as Virtual Boy as soon as possible, causing a failure that made him move from Nintendo to Bandai to create the WonderSwan before passing away.
ET wasn't a bad game. I beat it a number of times as well. The people who made videos mocking the game are people who have no clue whatsoever how to play it. It was one of the only Atari games with an opening screen(a nice looking one too). I love seeing people go "THAT OPENING SCREEN LOOKS HORRIBLE THIS GAME SUCKS!!!!" It's ATARI. Did you expect PS3 level graphics?
it was just bad timing. et came out at the bubble bursting for atari.. there was a few years, and then finally out came the nintendo and the sega master system.
but right after et was a small period where.. not many games were released.. atari kept pushing the price back and back etc, but it made little difference. the games.. just werent there :)
so i agree, et just happened to be a bad game at the end of a cycle.. i believe it is called a market correction :) later!
The part were LMG talks about going by the magazines and cover art is so true. I remember renting SNES and Genesis titles based on the art and or stuff that was advertised. this lasted for me when the N64 ended. I miss my childhood T~T
My parents actually never bought any games that really sucked, except for Defenders of the Crown and Where's Waldo, both for the NES, which was traded in for Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Go figure.
I've found a lot of old games at Dimples. For some, like Nightmare Creatures, I took a gamble on and purchased anyway. Same story for Amazon.
It doesn't really matter if the game sucked ass or not; If I want it, I'll get it, because that's what I do; Collect games.
Little Miss Gamer is awesome. Amagon was fun as heck! You could run out of ammo and have to club enemies with your rifle! It was really hard though. The ending was terrible, too...but it was fun!
I loved Today's Special!

LMG: Throw the rocks AT the zombies... ...F*** THIS S***!!!

TommyCD1 i think you totaly misunderstood what Z is trying to tell us here... she is trying to tell us that when you dislike a game someone loves it so nobody cares what wikipedia says or whatever... and for me E.T. is damn creative for the short amount of time they had to program this game... and people should stop mocking at it.. there are way worse games around REALLY worse games but whatever... some of my facorit games are also listed as the worst games of all time but still love em
nowaymangoshtomuchna 2 years ago

Even with the 4Kids dub.

the timeframe quoted in designing this game reminds me of the reason 2600 pac-man disappointed me so much.

But it's still pretty sweet
sonick808 2 years ago
Now that you mention it, I did play the hell out of the Harry Potter games. The earlier ones were better in general, I thought, especially the first two PC games. I guess I did put too much trust in my games then, because I thought most of them were good. Wonder what I'd think of them now?

Really diggin' the FFVI music_^) That takes me back. Now that's a game that won't go bad.
Toomnyusernae 2 years ago
E.T. for it's negative impact on gaming is the worst game ever released.

Atari shot themselves in the foot on that one. ET had nothing to do with it, their rush to market and gross overprinting did
sonick808 2 years ago

Did you expect PS3 level graphics?
happypranksgiving 2 years ago
I love how people act like the video game industry was doing really great until ET came out and single-handedly ruined everything.
akumacornflakes 2 years ago
I know, it's ridiculous.
happypranksgiving 2 years ago
it was just bad timing. et came out at the bubble bursting for atari.. there was a few years, and then finally out came the nintendo and the sega master system.
but right after et was a small period where.. not many games were released.. atari kept pushing the price back and back etc, but it made little difference. the games.. just werent there :)
so i agree, et just happened to be a bad game at the end of a cycle.. i believe it is called a market correction :) later!
