I was serving in Iraq and my bills weren't being paid. When I came home, I found out that a debt collector (Portfolio Recovery) was harrassing my family constantly. Since I was recovering from an Iraq injury in a California naval hospital, I paid the account in full over the phone. This was 8 years ago. Now, they are calling again asking for money. I paid the collector over the phone 8 years ago. I don't have proof. How can the government let these collectors do this?

Over the years I have seen numerous companies in the office building where I work, who were supposedly "practicing" debt collection. All of those people were just some street "scums" and not any kind of lawyers what-so-ever. Nor did they have a sufficient education to properly sue you if they could. All of them were using fear tactics to scare the hell out of people to get the money and they did just that, although not very efficiently, because most of them have went out of business! Fight them!

If your debts are below $5,000 is very difficult to sue you, because it has to go to a small court, and attorney's don't like small courts....so people should not be intimidated by these scum bags collectors, just throw away their letters, don't answer their phone calls, and if someone is banging your door, don't open it...nobody can enter your premises without a warrant..!!...if your debts are above the $5,000 mark, then hire an attorney...if you get sued they can "buy" time answering summons..

Well I'm a new debt collector and these people definitely dont represent all debt collectors. We don't lie to people about being cops or busting people but to be fair I think a lot of the victims they show are an exception and not a rule. Many of the people who do owe debt were financially unresponsible with their money.

@jmalynn Most collectors are okay people, just doing their job. If you ask them to quit calling they will send you letters for months before they give up. Really I have only had a problem with one debt that was only around a $1000, but I was injured and out of work for a year. I tired working payments of $50 a month out and they wouldn't work with me. They sold the debt, and each agency was worse than the last. Eventually it reached the SOL and was over, a good agency would have got the money.

@ex1193 BTW...I didn't mean to imply that they would give up on a legitimate debt. I am refering to the people that get old numbers that someone else had and ran up debts. I had to get a tracfone in college, and the women that had it before me had a lot of debt because I got at least 3 calls a day from collectors. Each one would be very nice when I explained that the number had changed hands and take me off of the list. Some would ask a few details just to make sure I wasn't lying.
