Hi Graham, may I ask what kinda computer are you using? I just got my first copy of Protools ever (PT10) running on a 3 Ghz dual core PC and it's not very capable of running many tracks at 24/96. Sonar was way more capable, but didn't sound as tight and clear.
I'm currently going to college in Hollywood for Audio Engineering and out of all the instructors there, you teach way better, logical, and what you show is simply amazing, and I've been there a year now. My hat is off to you sir. You just got a dedicated viewer! :D
What version of pro tools do you use? I've been using cubase for years and I dig the insert automation functions it has and I like the grid/editing functions but i hate the way the mixer is set up. And that is where I find I spend most of my time. I like Pro Tools, Logic, DP, even Sonar's mixer. It has all of the inserts, sends, input, and output right there. I wanna run PTHD8 on my G4. Does Pro Tools allow automation of most send/insert parameters, including plug-in parameters?
In Cubase you can set up an FX channel rather than a group channel and send your instruments to that for compression. However I have actually found that the danger in this is that this path can have a slight lag that causes phasing with the original tracks. But that could just be the system or plugins I have?
However, if that happens to you the other way to do it is to simply duplicate a track (or tracks) and just run them to a 'Compression' group,
@rich2rock A little harder, but you could still make a copy of the drums mix and compress that copy and blend it with the uncompressed drums. You could send the bass to that compressed track as well if you like.
Love your tutorial vids. A lot of the Pro Tools tutorial vids that I've been using in my learning ramp up have focused more on the practical/functional aspects of how to do things. Yours is the first series that I've come across that focuses on the tips and tricks that many of us could never figure out on our own. Many of us know all about using sends, buses and aux inputs but not the magic of how you can use these techniques like in this video. Thanks and keep up the great work!!
K, but how do you get the audio, because a try with different program and I will not let me record the audio from my mac and my Pro Tools session. If you will explain how do you have it set it up. Thank you. YH
Hi graham, I would like to know how do you make yours tutorial videos, because I have been trying to make a tutorial like yours but there is no way that I can get audio out from my pro tools session and the DG 002 rack. What do you use to get the sound into the screen recording video? Do you use any external something to get the audio into your videos. Thank you. YH
I thank you for all this great information that you are showing us in your audio mixing videos, I would like to know when are you going to post the all mix of this excellent song. Thank you once again. YH
I've read that traditional parallel compression (Motown Compression) techniques use a fast a attack and semi fast release to csquash the attack transients so when mixing them it in with the original signal you reduce the crest factor without raising the overall level of the mix. With a slow attack it is quite hard to not to raise the overall mix level since you are are letting the attack transients pass before the compressor kicks in making the attacks seem louder

This is awesome! But I don't think it's affecting the snare much. Doing great things for the kick and bass though!
pixelboxcreative 1 week ago
Ah of course! Never tried this with anything else than the kick. Time to do just that!
On another note, interesting how the attack/release of this compressor seems to be wired backwards (slowest when knob turned full left).
norbertmocsnik 1 week ago
is this any different than parallel compression? would using both be overkill or even necessary?
SchruteFarms69 1 week ago
Well, i think u should very simply boost some dbs to the bass and thats it....

@FriendNotFoeBand I'm currently on Pro Tools 10. Yes, you can automate just about any parameter in Prro Tools, including all plugin parameters.

Never heard of this but it seems fantastic!! Definitely going to try it in my next mix.

Hi,
Can't do this in Cubase 5. Here's what I do.
I create a grouptrack and with "send" I send snare kick and bass prefader to the grouptrack, working so far!
On the insert of the grouptrack I put a compressor for heavy parallel compressing.
And now the part that I don't understand.
How can I solo the grouptrack without hearing the audio from snare kick and bass also going to my main audio out?
I just want to hear the compressed grouptrack and I don't want to turn my faders down.
StayFunKey 2 months ago
@StayFunKey You would need to make your kick/snare tracks PRE FADER sends to the fat fader track.

anyone know a waves plug in that has a ratio of 20 or near it? i can only find up to 10
SchruteFarms69 5 months ago
@SchruteFarms69 around 20 or higher would make it a limiter. So that could be waves l2

What if you only have a sub mix of the drums to work with? if so, how would you utilize this method with a sub mix? EQ?
rich2rock 6 months ago
@rich2rock A little harder, but you could still make a copy of the drums mix and compress that copy and blend it with the uncompressed drums. You could send the bass to that compressed track as well if you like.

BarrettJones1111 6 months ago
Hi ... sending using send's means that you are sending the channels including the insert's ... is that what you are looking for ?
amirhe6 6 months ago
@amirhe6 Yep. You're sending a copy of the more natural sound (i.e. no heavy compression) to the Fat Fader.

nice tip... really fattens up the track without having to eq the crap out of the individual tracks... keeps things clean.
