@TheTIprogrammer perhaps the hd-pvr from haupagge is networked? if so im thinking you have not got samba. you need to look like a windows pc to the unit to share its files. samba is a program for getting onto windows file sharing. hope this helps.
I like your video so far. Could you please make a video on the steps necessary to set up or configure MythtV on a Kubuntu 10.10 system please? I have downloaded MythTv and I have a TV card installed in the PC. When I get to the screen which asks for my IP address and other items I am lost! Do I have to sign on to the MythTv database first? Please show the steps to take! Best Regards!
@durhamhs you should goto the mythbuntu site. you can install mythbuntu inside kubuntu. it has a settings manager ect. that has greatly aided me in getting it up and running. just remember mythtv is really 2 programs. back end and front end. back end sets up the cards, where to put your stuff. getts the channels set up ect. the front end is the fun bit. you can install it on various programs. btw your ip is 127.0.0.1 or "localhost". thats the defualt adress for your own computer.
I'm sorry to nit-pic, but Hauppauge is pronounced "ha-pog" (it's Native American). It's a town in New York (Long Island) where the company that makes those devices is located.
I'm not from there, I'm from Port Jeff Sta. but my dad use to work in Hauppauge
Yes. Install Ubuntu as usual. Install MythTV Control Center. Run it. Within Control Center, select the default startup like Ubuntu. Not Mythbuntu. And don't select autostart of MythTV. It can always be run later. Create a taskbar icon for MythTV Frontend. Use your Ubuntu normally, and run MythTV frontend whenever you want.
This is a great setup, thanks for posting the video. I want to do something similar to this, have a couple of questions. 1. can you watch live TV from more than one mediaMVP at a time? 2. can you record more than one thing at a time? 3. does either the MVP or MythTV support HD? Thanks! SP
Question. I have dishnetwork HD DVR in my bedroom feeding 2 TVs. coaxial cable feeds my other TV. I dont have any Ethernet ports available on TV rooms.
Q1. On the Hauppauge 350 what input should I connect order to get the programs.
Q.2 A cable coming straight from the Dish antenna is good enough?
Q.3 Since I don't have any Ethernet ports available in the rooms where I have the video inputs, how can I get my Mythtv box get connected to the internet?

Wow, it's certainly not a TiVo! That user interface looks horrible. Way too messy and complicated. Anybody used to the clean, simple elegance of a TiVo knows that DVRs get a lot better than this.

So it has multiple crappy UIs that you can choose between? Or does it mean that you have to actually program your own UI? Either way it sounds excellent for somebody who has countless hours to waste trying to achieve something that's still going to be vastly inferior to the TiVo.

Personally I like LinuxMCE more than MythTV. But if you don't like it, don't use it. Simple. Incidentally, the "superior" TiVo is dependent upon open source code embedded in the system, and what they did to deny the user any rights to change that code is one of the things that brought about clauses in GPLv3 to stop "TiVoization" (turning free software into something that is non-free). If you don't value your freedom, then keep using the likes of TiVo, iTunes and Silverlight.
Umm ya Because I'd way rather pay the $12.95 a month for Tivo in addition to the cable bill. Instead of free. Please tell me where I can pick up a 4TB Tivo, or how I can stream the Tivo to all my TVs. Or how I can visit my Tivo's website to add new shows or favorite actors to my recording list. Or how I can upgade Tivo to record from cable, air, and DirecTV simultaneously and have it all in one 14 day Program guide. Aside from those little trifles ya sure its just like Tivo.
I bought my TiVo with lifetime for ~$400. I'm impressed if you believe you can build your own dual tuner HD capable DVR for less than that. Also is your DVR the size of other AV equipment , nearly silent, and energy efficient? TiVo sure is.
TiVo can add shows via a website too, except in the case of TiVo the shows will actually be recorded because the guide data is from a much more reliable source.
I tried the webcam at the site you mentioned in ythe description and its not working i get a "The page cannot be displayed" error, do you have it turned off?
can you edit the recordings from this DVR like to remove commercials and burn the shows to DVD and can you convert the videos for playback on ipods. nice roomba vac BTW.
6:16 I have an emachines PC running windows XP at 1.8 Ghz and i can play dvds on this one does my pc pass for playing these videos recorded on this DVR
>>Can it stream movies that are shared on another PC on >>the network?
>>Such as browse and play shared files on the network?
Yes, MythTV has a plugin call MythVideo that can play back media. Combine that with Linux's feature of being able to mount network file systems such as CIFS, and NFS and is easy to setup MythTV to play
When you make a video like this... script out what you're going to say beforehand. It was pretty awkward there especially at the end. Otherwise, thanks for the informative video.
I'm using Fedora Core 4 and the Fedora Mythology instructions (google for 'mythtv fedora'). I'm using an nVidia FX5200 video card and a PVR-150 TV tuner.
Great video btw and thanks for the info. I'm planning on doing this with as soon as I get a capture card. I've heard KnoppMyth is really easy to set up too.
I'm using a HD-PVR to record game videos. Can I use MythTV to pull video off of the device? I don't know how to get video off of a PVR on ubuntu.

Thanks for the video! I just started my project with an unused PC I have.
There are a few thing I don't understand yet about MythTV and MediaMVP working together. I'll find that out.
one questions.
Mythbuntu will run in my old machine. I'll need a frontend in another machine to be able to see the videos and pics, etc?
can the frontend be on Windows and or linux?
thank you in advance!

Currently I am working on setting up a Mythbuntu box with a low end TV Tuner (yes I know I have my work cut out for me... but I lack the money lol)
My question:
Did you have to pay to get scheduling listings of TV Shows? Are they required to watch TV? Any response is much appreciated!
Superb video btw, I'll be checking out the mediaMVP later on.
