I think there was more tallent back then than maybe any other team in NCAA history. I know it was right up there with the Miami teams of the early 2000's, and the USC teams. I think back then the comp was much better because the teams from then still have players starting in the Pros today like McNabb.

Love the video nathan brings back a lot of fond memories. I was at the Arkansas game when the miracle took place. Man that was something to see. After he fumbled the whole statidium erupted into a mighty roar and the better part of ten thousand people that had walked out were trying to rush back in. And that last TD drive was one of the most memorable ever for me. Because even though a lot of people say we got a lucky break if they hadnt done something with it,it wouldnt have mattered. Good job

Travis Stephens was a superstar on our 11-win team in 2001, and he could barely get on the field in '98 even after we lost Jamal Lewis. But we needed all that talent. People forget the '98 Vols had to beat eight bowl teams, three of whom made the BCS.
1:16-1:19 I remember that game when I was a kid I wanted to cry haha if Arkansas wouldnt have fumbled the ball. Arkansas would have been in the title game.

What a cardiac yet exciting and deserving championship team this was, they deserved the national championship no doubt. However they squeaked by Syracuse, Florida and Arkansas.

They were one field goal (at the end of the Tennessee game) and an interception (during the LSU game, the LSU player did intercept the ball even though it wasn't called) away from never playing in the NC game.

I went to the Univ. of Nebraska...but I was at the 1998 UF/UT game..and I have NEVER seen anything like it. I was on the opposite end of the stadium when UF missed the kick in o/t. I had no idea what had happened..just pandemonium..I think the most fun I ever had at a game.

No, the system is not fine as it is. If you notice the AA division football conferences have a playoff. They go to school just like the Division I schools, so your argument about there not being enough time is BS. The main reason they dont want a playoff is because of the bowl games. It's all about money! This should make those of you happy who dont want to see a real champion. You can keep losing games, get 2 months to prepare for the NC, and then play. You think that makes you a champion?
asking college football athletes to go into a playoff for an additional two weeks after already winning a conference championship, sacrificing pretty much ALL of their time off inbetween semesters before going into either a BCS bowl game or national championship game is ludicrous! there's never been one before and there shouldn't be one. FSU had one loss before playing Tennessee in 1999. Was there any bitching, moaning or groaning then? No. The system is fine how it is.
The only problem with your arguement is that there aren't many players in college football that care about acidemics. They go to play football and only to play football.
actually ohio state bitched about it quite a bit that year (not getting a shot at the vols). bitching was john cooper's MO. Every single sports leauge in the world determine's its champion through a playoff or tournament of some kind and if not then all teams in a league will play a round robin format (which cant be done in college football since there are 120ish teams. The BSC is an indefensible system that must be done away with if we're ever going to get any legitimate national champions.

I think you need to go back and look at how many teams Florida played in the regular season that also became bowl eligible. They play in a tougher conference, had more teams from their conference go to bowls, have a higher bowl win % than any other conference. As for the other 1-loss teams, who else did USC play? UWA? WSU? ASU? Stanford? As for Texas, it's the conference rules (which they didn't change) as for a tiebreak to who plays for the Big 12. As for Ole Miss, it won't happen again.

Deon Grant was a beast. He has had more impressive interceptions than Eric Berry. Obviously, Berry's returns are unmatched, but his picks are mostly just terrible passes. This could also be cause Berry is a pure safety, not cornerback. Who knows? I also like #30's recovery 32 seconds in. Don't see our defensive backs recover and knock the ball away like that anymore.

Clink Stoener's "stumble and fumble" and Billy Ratlif recovering and Travis Henry taking every handoff after that for a TD to win the game and each run the crowd got louder and louder. It was UT's first week at being number one. I will never forget the way it sounded on CBS; the band, the crowd, Sean McDonough's call and the orange fireworks in the background after the touchdown. This stuff gave you goosebumps

I went to the Univ. of Nebraska...but I was at the 1998 UF/UT game..and I have NEVER seen anything like it. I was on the opposite end of the stadium when UF missed the kick in o/t. I had no idea what had happened..just pandemonium..I think the most fun I ever had at a game.

No, the system is not fine as it is. If you notice the AA division football conferences have a playoff. They go to school just like the Division I schools, so your argument about there not being enough time is BS. The main reason they dont want a playoff is because of the bowl games. It's all about money! This should make those of you happy who dont want to see a real champion. You can keep losing games, get 2 months to prepare for the NC, and then play. You think that makes you a champion?

asking college football athletes to go into a playoff for an additional two weeks after already winning a conference championship, sacrificing pretty much ALL of their time off inbetween semesters before going into either a BCS bowl game or national championship game is ludicrous! there's never been one before and there shouldn't be one. FSU had one loss before playing Tennessee in 1999. Was there any bitching, moaning or groaning then? No. The system is fine how it is.

actually ohio state bitched about it quite a bit that year (not getting a shot at the vols). bitching was john cooper's MO. Every single sports leauge in the world determine's its champion through a playoff or tournament of some kind and if not then all teams in a league will play a round robin format (which cant be done in college football since there are 120ish teams. The BSC is an indefensible system that must be done away with if we're ever going to get any legitimate national champions.

I think you need to go back and look at how many teams Florida played in the regular season that also became bowl eligible. They play in a tougher conference, had more teams from their conference go to bowls, have a higher bowl win % than any other conference. As for the other 1-loss teams, who else did USC play? UWA? WSU? ASU? Stanford? As for Texas, it's the conference rules (which they didn't change) as for a tiebreak to who plays for the Big 12. As for Ole Miss, it won't happen again.

Hey, using your logic, why not just have the NC every year between the SEC and Big 12? No, because everybody knows thats BS. How do you explain an undefeated Utah beating Alabama? See, you just dont get it. Anytime there are undefeated teams and other one loss teams, who's to say who will beat who? That's why it should be settled on the field. There should be some kind of playoff. There wont be a true champion until there is one!

i didn't say it should be the SEC vs. Big 12. OSU was in it twice in a row. before that it was Pac 10 vs. Big 12. what it DOES come down to is the media darlings like USC pissed that they're not granted a berth in the championship game...just because of WHO THEY ARE. the SEC is dominating right now and that has everyone else pissed. and what YOU don't get is the fact that it's extremely difficult to have a playoff system in college football. these kids are STUDENT athletes, not pros.

Yeah, I'm sure Urban Meyer is happy Ole Miss isn't on the schedule this year. For all your greatness, when are you going to have an undefeated season? All those one loss teams last season, and you keep getting the nod to play in the NC. Until there's a playoff, I would rather go undefeated and not have an asterisk beside my championships.

Deon Grant was a beast. He has had more impressive interceptions than Eric Berry. Obviously, Berry's returns are unmatched, but his picks are mostly just terrible passes. This could also be cause Berry is a pure safety, not cornerback. Who knows? I also like #30's recovery 32 seconds in. Don't see our defensive backs recover and knock the ball away like that anymore.

to your disappointment, Meyer ain't goin nowhere. Tebow IS NOT the whole team. John Brantley will be a great QB at Florida along with the other GREAT PLAYERS that will still be on the roster when he takes over. and you say mediocrity? when were we ever? pre 1985 maybe... but those days are long gone. don't hate because we've practically owned UT since 1990...how many times have you won since? and as i recall, we nearly hung 60 on you last time you came to the swamp, SON!

Dude seriously Tebow has been the Team since he became the starter. Alabama will tell you yall wouldnt have won the SEC last year without Tebow. Brantley maybe be a good qb but not great like Tebow, for instance Manning was great clauson was good. Get the drift on that one? after Tebow yall wont have as good of success i will guarantee you. The ND spot is Meyer's "dream job" and for good reasons. every week no matter who the opponent is Nationally Televised. If he leaves i wont be suprised.

i know the Vols will be PRAYING for him to leave...but it isn't going to happen after next year. and Spurrier left after 11 years and beating the Vols 8 times in his tenure. i know you're hoping that another Zook will come in, but IT WON'T HAPPEN. and if Manning was so great, how come he couldn't beat us??? and you haven't even seen Brantley play to his full potential, but you might when we hang up enough points on you to relieve Tebow and Brantley will just keep the score fest going.

I feel that the national title game would have been better if ohio st. had made it in over florida st. That was probably cooper's best team and if not for one mysterious half of football, would have been undefeated. OSU would have matched up with tennessee a lot better than fsu. but anyways, who is LB #27 because he is a complete tank!

why doesn't anybody show the 1998 UT Arkansas game? The more exciting game EVER! Clink Stoener's "stumble and fumble" and Billy Ratlif recovering and Travis Henry taking every handoff after that for a TD to win the game and each run the crowd got louder and louder. It was UT's first week at being number one. I will never forget the way it sounded on CBS; the band, the crowd, Sean McDonough's call and the orange fireworks in the background after the touchdown. This stuff gave you goosebumps
