there are also very excellent funny parts with deep reaching well targeted critizism against the advertising industry - which of course wants to exploit this king coming to New York.
Not one of Chaplin's best, but I will say that the apple sure didn't fall too far from the tree...for a kid of Michael's age to memorize lines as complicated as that...WOW!
@Loshia2002 No this is definitely one of his best films.
He never before had such deep reaching psychologic and explicit political content. The film also has any excellently funny and deep reaching critzism of the advertising industry and their methods. Excellent how the beautiful lady from the advertising agency tries to convince him to promote their products.
@shawnadancing - I only saw Michael's lips move for one line, which, I think is pretty impressive considering all of the lines he had to memorize. He was so young yet he looked as though he felt those words passionately--it was a cute scene!
it's always so tacky to use kids for a director (writer to boot), except when it's chaplin doing the bid ... only sir charles could transform a kid in the moth ruthless of political public speaker ... the kid edit's the school paper ... the best scene of the movie acting wise : the kid chaplin groomed must have grown up as wicked as jackie coogan (from "the kid")
if anyone is a Doctor Who fan, I have a bit of trivia for you. Pause at 3:28 and look at the child actor who just turned Mister Chaplin's hat into a cake. That is Frazer Hines. Better known as Jamie McCrimmon from Doctor Who. He was 12 or 13 years old at the time and Mister Chaplin like his idea of putting icing IN his hat but then asked him to make the hat into a cake. Learned that from Mister Hines' autobiography and he said that he suprised that Mister Chaplin even listened to him.
it did, because without his assassination Christianity would have never cum up, because the Republic, which Octavian ended would have continued. Rule: After a very good Emperor usally follows a worse one...
Absolutely brilliant. And hysterical. I can't help but to think Charlie was expressing his own views about his own life through the McCarthy era and his deportation through his sons dialogue - in fact I'm almost certain. At any rate, priceless...
We've never seemed to move beyond that McCarthism attitude in many areas. Chaplin was ever making wonderful statements full of philosophical truths ... an amazing mind and talent. Watch my other video on Monsieur Verdoux - more genius! I also enjoy, but don't have it posted, his speech as Hitler in The Great Dictator ... once again, amazing man with a great message of peace and equality.
@GeminiNightOwl Chaplin was not deported. He was in London when the FBI decided to recommend the cancellation of his visa (he never naturalized as American).
@lotwyo I stand corrected - what I was thinking was banishment and not allowed re entry due to what they perceived as communist leanings. I know he never became a naturalized citizen, because he declared himself a 'citizen of the world".
"Because of too much power". Simple and true.

@3:12 "The Roman Empire collapsed with the assassination of Caesar"
That's actually entirely wrong. The empire literally began with Caesar's death. Before him, Rome was a republic.

Great movie. My favorite part of this movie is when Shadov does the recitation of Hamlet. Man can he act.

wtf the roman empire didn't collapse because of the assassination of ceasar
AcrosticAcoustic 2 years ago
Indeed. It was The Republic that collapsed following Julius Caesar's assassination. But the point of too much power is still valid.
