A stopped clock is right 2 times a day, one seet at the wrong time never is right. The worst lipsycher in the universe at least gets a few matches, just by the laws of chance. TOTAL absence of any correct lip movement means it's the video's fault.
Great song, I think the video is too fast, but it's probably the best version we will ever get... so thank you for posting this great early Olivia video
This is such a perfect record, both in the production and in the way ONJ deliveres the vocal. The amazing thing is that they managed to make a whole album of tracks as good as this.
On September 26th, 1948, a miraculous birth took place in Cambridge, England. By the tender age of 6, the blue marvelled eyed girl would migrate to Melbourne, Australia with her parents. At 14, she appeared in various Australian television shows like the "Go Show." It was there, she met music producer "John Farrar," and within a few short years, the life of Olivia Newton John, and "the world," would never be the same again after she recorded her first top 40 hit, "If Not For You."
I do prefer Dylan's version to ONJ's, but if it were a dancing and singing version, Olivia's got it all over Bobby. (Dylan wishes that Olivia had been all over him...)
This song was all over AM radio when I was a kid, and it wasn't until 15 years later that I finally heard Dylan's rendition.
I didn't realize just how hot she was until I saw this video. Jah wohl, Fraulein!
ONJ...just about perfect..a bit mom..a bit your sis..a bit the pretty girl in class .a bit the girl next door.....the kind a girl all men want....she is the best... a voice and smile thats the best....a great dancer...1.20-1.40 pushes to the edge with class and style...
Great clip from Stunning Olivia from 1971! yes and i was 14, this is the first time i've seen her sing this! there were NO videos to look at in those days, Top of the pops kept getting dumped to save money cos of power strikes! those were great fucking days!!!!!!
Okay..I know she is lip-synching the 1971 hit single...but I don't mind. This is the very song that mesmerised me and made me a huge fan in the first place. To this day...she STILL has the voice of an angel...and still one of the sweetest and most beautiful women around. Saw her in concert with a packed crowd at Polaris Ampetheater in Columbus in 1999. She has a heart and voice that is pure. God love her. I DIG LIV!
Can someone post the original actual TV show this video came from, I'd like to know what the name of the obviuosly enjoyable and funky song was that Olivia was singing and dancing to in the video.
She was, and still is so adorable and charming!
God Bless her for raising funds and awareness for breast cancer research.
I know when I hear this it seems like only yesterday but it was quite a bit longer than that huh Gary ;) ;) I was 12 when this hit the airwaves. Hmm like 37 years ago, oh so many 'yesterdays' so few tomorrows.
The video and the sound are playing 2 different songs. Does anyone know what song she is singing in the video, obviously something a little more funky.
singin perfectly is a part of singing - not the complete picture - dylan had & has somthin special that very few "perfect" singers have - don't get me wrong i think ONJ has beautiful voice (and she is vg looking) - its just that dylan is greater than his parts when it comes to singing - he has outlasted most good singers - their perfect voices have failed them - dylan just goes from strength 2 strenght
What is wrong with the sound track here? It's way off. Great song, though, as sung by ONJ. Dylan's version of his own song was terrible and had no melody.
Olivia's first hit from 1971. This arrangement of the Bob Dylan song was based on George Harrison's version on his All Things Must Pass LP. Olivia later covered George's What Is Life from the same LP.
If this was released in 1972, I was in the 11th grade.
It was her decision. In a TV documentary, I remember hearing her say that the CMA had put her down for selling out to rock music, and she got offended. She "claimed" she didn't even know she was a country singer. Then she said she didn't like the "goodie-two-shoes" "girl next door" image anymore so she fired her producer and hired a new one to help her make the change. I think it was a VERY BAD MOVE on her part.
bad move is right. country was where she belonged. i think since 'new' country came in this last decade or so, the ideas of the old timers have been completely sold out. it doesn't have the same qualities it had. bubble gum country is the best way to describe it. just think of what she could still be contributing in this area. her influence has been lost because she didn't participate in it long enough. apparently, she wanted to view herself as a pop star instead. sad.
Lots of singers sing other people's songs, and there's nothing wrong with that. If you were to complain about her doing a George Harrison song, saying that she stole it from him, then you would have to complain about George Harrison stealing from Bob Dylan, who wrote and sang the song. Elvis also sang other people's music.
Well, the guy was probably referring to the fact that Olivia's version - nice as it is - is based much more on Harrison's version of the song than Dylan's. The main riff is, in fact, Harrison's - as heard on the early version from Dylan's 'Bootleg Series' boxset containing George on lead guitar. That riff wasn't used on Dylan's released version, whereas George resurrected it for his own version.
Olivia never did any of her own songs, but that didn't matter because she was such a cute babe and she was the sweetest girl of the 70's. I liked her until just after she did the movie Grease, and decided that she didn't like the sweet girl image anymore. I have and liked all of her albums until she did "Physical" and went punk.
I love this song. It is one of my favorite covers of all time. I totally agree that she was cool 'until'.
I got this album when I was in 5th grade. I remember how much I like it then. Until this surprise find at youtube, I would have not heard any part of it.
I absolutely HATED Grease and any of that sell out smut that producers thought she should do. To bad artists succomb to kitch.
A little bit of random info, when recording this song, her dog knocked something over and you can hear it on CD. LOL. Probably one of her Irish setters, since she has Irish setter fever. Isn't her current setter's name Jack? I know she has one becasue he appeared on American Idol with her last September.
Yes this is definitely Top 40 not country! I do love this song and it started a long string of hits! Love her early 70's dress and hair. She was trendy but she was prettiest around 1979.
Her outfit is totally not out of synch with the video. The hippy fashion was typical of the very early 70's and goes in hand with this song sung by George Harrison and written by Bob Dylan. You're probably too young to know about that era because anyone who lived it remembers this style.
And I am a big Dylan and Harrison fan but love ONJ's version. This folk song put her on the map and was her first big hit.
Ahhh, the song that made me fall in love with Olivia Newton-John. This was the song that introduced her to the United States. Unfortunately, the record company tried to market her in the country music genre and I think it was a problem for her, since she considered herself a pop singer. I remember always listening to the b-side of records because they were sometimes as good as the hit side. This is true with this song. The b-side was "The Biggest Clown" which I played more than the a-side!
have just listened to dylan's original.. and yes, i agree.. his version is much better! olivia herself has said she disliked the choice of song at the time, so maybe that explains her slight lack of conviction when singing it...!? by the way, i am an ardent ONJ fan, but that doesn't mean I like EVERYTHING olivia puts out!!!!! xx peace xx
Or, SgtRock and Underdog, Jimmy Webb wrote all those great songs for Glen Campbell and others, but on an album he did of his own material about ten years ago, it was a total snoozerama.
Came looking for some early 70 ONJ, to remember why my teenage self was so smitten with her - and here she is, and yes indeed I remember. Thanks for posting.
yes this video is obviously off key but she is the BEST and most GORGEOUS there is ever!! and this was her first official solo single! and its awesome, if u disagee well dont listen ....

Wow. Nobody knows how to spoil a great Bob Dylan song like Olivia Newton John.

The best way to "ruin" a Bob Dylan song would be to have Dylan himself sing it?
He could write songs, but sing? Not so much.

Is that a question? Bob Dylan is a far better singer than this chick from Grease.

Grease? i thought she was from Australia. (it's a joke}

That goes for Paul Williams too. He could write like crazy but he sang like an intestinal obstruction.

She is so lovely and so is this song.
It's a real shame the video and audio are not in sync at all. Any chance you could re-post it and maybe that would get fixed?
