  • That is so beautiful! The images, colors, and celtic tone to the music....breathtaking.

  • Hermosa melodía.

  • At my school Christmas show, both 6th grade classes sang it but without orchestra music and I love this song!!

  • This is my favorite carol as well.

  • Love this song so much...

  • Thanks for the info. I'll head to itunes and see if they have the "Winter Owl" version.

  • Thank you so much for this. I am a long way from home and family now, and many of the people I loved have gone. This made me cry - in a good way.

  • Beautiful--thanks for posting. Corrine May also does an exquisite version (vocals/piano) which can be found on YouTube.

  • ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥

  • REVELATION. EVER!!!!!!

  • I gotta tell you as much as I like this version there's a new one I like better. It's by a group called "Winter Owl". Anyone know where I can buy that version? I'll try to post the video. It's on youtube and it's stunning.

  • @genepoolx Winter Owl's version of this song is readily available on iTunes. From the album "Dreaming Of December".

Wishing you a very happy and creative New Year 2011 !

    Heartfelt greetings, Ute.

  • I have always loved this Christmas carol and this is a beautiful version. The pictures complemented it perfectly. Thank you.

  • I had this song in my head for the last nine years... I just found out it's name. This song carries a profound connotation to the passage of time to me.

Isn't it interesting how a picture or piece of music can be the symbol to a feeling or landscape? Sometimes so clearly?

  • @Dconquist yup its what we call "soundscapes" its an actual genre

  • How could anyone say that they dislike this? Maybe it isn't their favorite song, but to "dislike" it? It is like disliking a sunset or a tree... I guess some people just aren't satisfied unless they are dissatisfied with everything.

  • @uintaj probably some pu@#y that listens to c, rap or dip sh@# music , Ive noticed those types are without God , without soul, without social grace , they were born to die and everything to them is ugly ,

  • @ahitler1000 What you say is the truth. We live in a world where perversion and ugliness is the norm and beauty the deviation. The choice of music on YouTube, even for the most mundane of topics, is hideous.

  • Very soothing.

  • Her music always gives me goose bumps and captivates me (sometimes I'm touched to tears XD) Soppy ol' me

  • beautiful, thanks for sharing.

  • this was my mum's favourite Christmas song. Sadly, she passed away a few years ago but whenever i listen to it, it takes me straight back to being a little girl curled up on her knee infront of a blazing fire on a cold night. Thanks for the memories mum xxx

  • Anyone can tell me which CD this is? I'm thinking of getting one.

  • This is a wonderful song... Beautiful and endlessly serene, yet always a little bit sad, just as the Winter itself. I love Winter, and this song describes it really well. Makes me think of all those long evenings when you stand in the window, look at the snow outside and let your thoughts wander through past and present. And long for something you're not able to name.

  • It's not so bleak, it sounds quite pleasant.

It's downright cheerful compared to the more "goth" style songs out there. lol

  • This is very moving, although I absolutely HATE winter!

  • @annwnevelyn I thought that the words were by Christian Rossetti.

  • @annwnevelyn Christina, not Christian, sorry. Wow that is really easy to type incorrectly, and has dramatic consequences.

  • The song In the Bleak Midwinter comes from a poem of the same name written by Christina Rossetti (1872).

  • Here are the words to the poem: In the bleak mid-winter

    Frosty wind made moan,

    Earth stood hard as iron,

    Water like a stone;

Snow had fallen, snow on snow,

    Snow on snow,

    In the bleak mid-winter

    Long ago.

  • Our God, Heaven cannot hold Him

    Nor earth sustain;

Heaven and earth shall flee away

    When He comes to reign:

    In the bleak mid-winter

    A stable-place sufficed

    The Lord God Almighty,

    Jesus Christ.

  • Enough for Him, whom cherubim Worship night and day, A breastful of milk And a mangerful of hay; Enough for Him, whom angels Fall down before, The ox and ass and camel Which adore. Angels and archangels May have gathered there, Cherubim and seraphim Thronged the air, But only His mother In her maiden bliss, Worshipped the Beloved With a kiss.
  • What can I give Him,

    Poor as I am?

    If I were a shepherd

    I would bring a lamb,

If I were a wise man

    I would do my part,

Yet what I can I give Him,

    Give my heart.

  • I have to confess I am not British, but I love this song. I live in Sweden and it speaks to the heart here as well.

  • I hated singing in school as a kid but at Christmas we would give a rousing rendition of this and I would have tears in my eyes by the end of the song. There is some music that cuts right to the bone if you're British and this is a fine example! The Lark Ascending is another.

  • It has a lyric of its own.

  • Viola and cello. The violin part is the higher notes. When the three play together, it's like a choir with a sporano, alto, and bass.

  • I was at my ex's orchestra Christmas concert a few weekends again, and they played this, and I was in love with the song. Choir and orchestra just made the song so beautiful. <333

  • i sing this in chorus all the time. the first time i almost cried.

  • The first time I heard it was in the play A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. It was sang when Tiny Tim died. It was so so sad. I love this song.

  • wonderful photography to accompany a great performance of a beautiful song

  • Possibly my favourite carol. I enjoyed performing it in christmas 2007

  • Beautiful like a winter wonderland :)

  • I love this song!! omq it's so beautiful! =))

  • This song is so beautiful. I love to sing it.

I love it, it's such a pretty and sweet song!!

  • I'm singing this song in choir and it is one of my favorites!!

  • were singing this song for chior so beautiful

  • Wow, the first picture looks a lot like the park next to my house... Very, very good video and of course music!

  • Beautiful! Lovely pictures too.

  • Thank you, Kyprosal and WaftyHippyLass. Christina Rosetti have written this wonderful poem. Finally, I'm singing it in the kitchen and I'm really happy.

  • I love this piece.I play this at band.I play the oboe, so its a really sound that almost makes me want to cry.

  • I googled - it is indeed a Christina Rosetti poem, and she was DG's sister. What a gifted family.

  • Ooh, and also, I believe Christina Rosetti may have written the original poem? She may be the sister of Dante Gabriel Rosetti, the Pre-Raphaelite. I'm not sure about either factoid... will have to google...

  • Hello lovely people - does anyone know what the stringed instrument that opens the piece is? It doesn't sound like a normal violin or viola - at a guesstimate I think it's a type of mediaeval-ish violin but I wondered if anyone knew? Ta. :)

  • I'd say it's a cello...

  • sounds like a regular violin to me... I might be wrong, considering I don't play a string instrument, but I kow someone who plays viloin and theirs sounds about the same as this.

  • Hi Ms Dreamfighter, no, sadly i cannot take credit for the rhyme , as it is a hymn , and a very famous one:)..meant to my dutch gf....

  • Music from Gustav Holst (1874 - 1934); wonderful Song and Video!

  • Hermosa musica navideña que invita a querer la vida.

  • @wizzard1956 - a lovely comment, good luck to you ;-)

  • @wizzard1956

    Well said, Oldtimer.

  • @wizzard1956 Ah, what a nice thing to say. Thank you, wizzard, for uplifting words. My mother-in-law, who's 65, runs faster than I do, and is so energetically young, swears by Loreena as well. In fact, she brought Loreena into my life.

  • The music flows along like a gentle stream that lulls you into a dreamy existence!

  • It is beautiful. I come from Spain, where summers are scorchingly hot, and therefore I learnt to appreciate winter since childhood. Well, may be I was (and still am) a very strange person, but I have always felt the deep poetry of autumn and winter. Winter is the season of peace. Thank you, Loreena McKennitt, for your work.

  • Just love this song and Loreena McKennitt and the video is a joy to watch - great job!

  • We sang this at church yesterday. I cried.

  • Hello ... nice, sublime warmth shines through those icy landscapes ... all best to you:)

  • Very nice :)

  • The original of this was composed by Gustav Holst

  • This is one of my most favourite Christmas songs it's a shame she didn't sing for part of it though...McKennitt has a lovely voice...

  • ~Beautiful winter video...much peace*****~

  • hey, did you change the video?

  • i'd said "beautiful indeed.. kinda sounds like that "long long ago" piece, either that or that one by dvorak.."

  • hey where'd my comment go

  • Beautiful.. You always find great pictures too. Do you know who is the cellist?

  • Thank you !! The cellist is Caroline Lavelle :)
