I can accept that atheists die first. You have to be a cynic to question the beliefs of the masses, and cynics are generally more pessimistic and critical of life than religious people. This alternative outlook is less altruistic and can cause more stress. Naturally, additional stress can lead to a faster expiration. This however doesn't mean that atheists are all doomed, and it certainly doesn't mean we're not right :D
You don't need to BELIEVE you have supernatural powers because if a human is in a life or death struggle, the brain can allow your muscles to use more of its fibers because in any normal situation a human only uses about 15% of his muscle capability. This survival capability is generic to all humans and has nothing to do with ones personal belief.

Speaking as an Atheist, I'd like to believe I'd be a survivor not because I believe in a higher power, but because I believe in survival being a natural ability shaped by billions of years of development. Besides I don't believe life after death, reincarnation, or anything to do with the consciousness existing separate from the physical body - therefore if nothing else, my instinct to survive is based on wanting to make the most out of the one life I have!

Read Isaac Asimov's "The Relativity of Wrong". These thoughts answer the questions of the day and add to the body of knowledge which lead to a better answer - which may be more correct but still "wrong". Keep your faith if it helps you but realize that it could bear improvement. Mine does.

The rules are precisely known to great mathematical certainty and it takes no God to do this.
