i owned a rotti as a first dog and there pure muscle i would much rather get chased by a gs then a rotti and i would say rottis would win in a fight but there not the ideal guard dog. There more like personal protection whereas gs are all round. I want to get a black gs soon though

German Shepherds are not a giant sized breed like great danes and mastiffs, they weren't built or created by the breeds founder to be 130 pound sloths. They were created to be an agile and athletic dog who can do it all. Not fat 130 pound 27" couch potatoes. This counts for American or German lines. Do some research and find me one schutzhund 3 GSD that weighs 130 pounds.

The standard calls for something specific and breeders are breeding outside of that to appeal to a certain customer base. When you start breeding SPECIFICALLY for size... breeders tend to disregard the more important things like health, temperament, and working ability. Again, I'd never buy from a breeder specifically breeding outside of the standard.

@GrungeMetalRocker In this clip she was probably a little over one. Now she's about 3.5 (4 in march). She's about the same weight as she was back then... probably in the 72-74 range depending on the time of day, but it's all muscle. This is actually kind of big for what a female shepherd should be. I believe the German SV (their standard) calls for between 55-70 pounds for females and 70-85 pounds for males. Anything over that is oversized.
I had the misfortune of seeing a German Shepard and a Rott fight this weekend due to territorial issues and it wasn't pretty! If we wouldn't have stopped them, they would of killed each other..but the Rotty "won" the fight hands down...and a Rott probably always will because of their jaw size..they have a stronger bite force ..plus the size of their body..it doesn't compare!

His mother looked kind of like this one. I bought him from a military family, so I just put 2 and 2 together since many people in the military spend time in Germany. My pup looks thicker than alot of GSD's I've seen ,but not quite as tank like as his father. I think he's an Amercian/ European mix.

The german/czech working lines tend to be sables and all black and the show lines (American and German) and typically black and tan. And a 120 pound shepherd that's only 26'' is really overweight and that's not good at all for their hips and joints. What are you feeding and how much every day?

I'm guessing on the fathers weight at 120lbs. He was really thick with heavy looking leg bones, but did not look fat and moved really well. My pup as well as his father do not look like most ofthe GSD's I see. I met a breeder at the dog park when he was 6 months that told me he looked European. All can say for sure is he's an awsome dog.

The DDR (east german working) line dogs typically have massive heads and heavy bones, but don't mistake heavy bone vs a fat/oversized dog... big difference. There's such a significant difference in all the different lines that you can at least have an idea of the dogs lines by looking at the dog... it's almost like they're different breeds. I have two 8moths old german shepherd pups, the male weighs 40kg (88lbs) and his height is 69cm (27,6 inches) at the withers (the ideal height is 63cm), he's a BIG one!
These are my two favorite breeds. I have a GSD who has so much energy i take him for a 1.5 mile jog in the mornings and a 4 mile bike ride in the evening and he's still highly active in the house. Are rottweilers more calm? my dog is a puppy so i wont be getting another dog for a long time but im thinking i want a less active dog next time so are rottweilers less active?
rotties in general are less active and need less exercise than GSD's -- they were bred for different purposes -- ideally a GSD should get at least 5 miles worth of exercise every day, but when i was younger i used to go on bicycle tours of 20-30mi+ and my aging (8yo) GSD at the time had no problem keeping up with only the occasional break for some water. rotties are bred for strength and don't have that kind of endurance but that doesn't mean they are sedentary dogs.

I have owned GSDs and Rotties since 1983. Rotties are bigger and stronger but GSDs are amazing athletes, super fast and smart. Both fantastic breeds and both amazingly loyal family animals. You cant go wrong with either. Littel known fact: Rotties are probably THE gassiest dogs you can own. They are farting machines. Burnt rubber farts...that can clear a room in seconds. GSDs almost never fart.

@siamesecats334 Neither is better and neither is worse. Both Rottweilers and German Sheps are great dogs when trained correctly but they both have a tendency to be agressive when ill-trained making them better for more expeirienced ownwers. So neither is better but they are just equally as awesome.

These are my two favorite breeds. I have a GSD who has so much energy i take him for a 1.5 mile jog in the mornings and a 4 mile bike ride in the evening and he's still highly active in the house. Are rottweilers more calm? my dog is a puppy so i wont be getting another dog for a long time but im thinking i want a less active dog next time so are rottweilers less active?

rotties in general are less active and need less exercise than GSD's -- they were bred for different purposes -- ideally a GSD should get at least 5 miles worth of exercise every day, but when i was younger i used to go on bicycle tours of 20-30mi+ and my aging (8yo) GSD at the time had no problem keeping up with only the occasional break for some water. rotties are bred for strength and don't have that kind of endurance but that doesn't mean they are sedentary dogs.

My female German shepherd is very protective of me, as i am of her too! True also how it's dumb to say 1 breed is better than another. My uncle has a Rottweiler and it's a great dog, we never say 1 is better than the other, we both love and respect each others choice of breed :)

my german shepherd dog hes only 7 months turnin 8 months on the 10 of aug. and his teeth ore curled back that means he tears things apart and he is protective to me more in the family becuz im 12 and a girl. when i get sick he helps me alot sometimes he even licks me in the face when i cry and have a fever. hes so protective that once when a dude pushed me he ran up to him and tour his skin apart and left a blood mark and a little of his skin was gone i was surprised becuz he is only 7 months

Toughest dog I have owned, an AMerican Bulldog male over 120 lbs. Black guy bought him from me, I had owned the dog for 3yrs . I sold him to this guy and next thing I saw the dog in the News killing a pitbull in a sanction fight. Sad. The mental midget thinks "if my dog is tough I get status."

I have owned GSDs and Rotties since 1983. Rotties are bigger and stronger but GSDs are amazing athletes, super fast and smart. Both fantastic breeds and both amazingly loyal family animals. You cant go wrong with either. Littel known fact: Rotties are probably THE gassiest dogs you can own. They are farting machines. Burnt rubber farts...that can clear a room in seconds. GSDs almost never fart.

@siamesecats334 Neither is better and neither is worse. Both Rottweilers and German Sheps are great dogs when trained correctly but they both have a tendency to be agressive when ill-trained making them better for more expeirienced ownwers. So neither is better but they are just equally as awesome.
