  • Cedric never gets to fucking talk when Omar's around.

  • Weird yet awesome recording method. :D

  • What a terrible interviewer....

  • Omar Rodriguez-López and Carlos Alomar, in my opinion, are the most proficient rock-music-guitar-players of Latin American descent that have ever existed. I`m from Puerto Rico, as they are, and I find it eery that not many people know about them here... We should build monuments for them! And named streets in their honor!! Hopefully the young-generation does that for Omar, but I`d hate to see Carlos Alomar forgotten in his own country...

  • so they jam it out right? LOL

  • I am continuously amazed by their brilliance. Everything they do is spec-freaking-tacular. Like, they're just genious. I wish other bands had their mentality.

  • not the editing part obviously, but i think Miles Davis used the technique of seperating the musicians of his band to learn parts so that there was greater competition as it were...

  • i know that im gonna sound weird but i hope that they're not using that much, i hope that their genious is pure from their hearts.

  • @showergel1 even if you're on drugs it's still coming from your heart. I get the impression you've never experienced drugs or creating music first hand.

  • comatorium = stalking geeks, get a life plox

  • Omar is a pure genius. Cedric is a natural singing god. I think that the band has it all.

  • i thought it was jams

like john and omars stuff sounds like high jams

i didnt know it was all written out

  • Why is that guy sitting on a bed?

  • most people are stupid and listen to mainstream radio, mars volta are so musically past that, people just think their records sound like noise and jamming, when its really structured genius, it's just a little different from most people's expectations, their music is genius, it takes time for people to accept whats different. I listen to them religiously bcus i think their the best band out right now.

  • I think they're amazing musicians, great writers, everything...

But they really shouldn't be so up-tight about things. They'll take anything as an insult. They have to realize that not everybody is going to think of music the way they think of it....

What i'm trying to say is: Yes. You can make highly intricate, complex pieces of art that barely any of the world can replicate... and not be so touchy and so glarey with other's works, societies, etc....

I'm not hating or anything.. but...

  • @MikeTheGuy00 I could not imagine talking to them without offending them saying anything...

  • @MikeTheGuy00 I think they're a lot more humble than you percive them to be. I think their eclectic music taste is a testament to that.

  • @MikeTheGuy00 i believe they have the right to be up tight about everything...omar simply explains it at the beggining..theres alot of misconceptions about the band, based on what everyone wants to believe. not what they know. viva volta.

  • @eamnr14 Agreed, honestly. People over-analyze the music most of the time.

  • thy arnt gay?? wtf omar is like married i think and a christian

    u jerks!!1

  • @vegadomis32988 Omar isn't a christian. He has a strong dislike of all organised religion.

  • its actually not a slap in the face.. its a compliment.. i would love to be able to play as well when im writing a structured song as i do when im doing improv

  • mars volta should just be called "Omar and company"

  • @xInDiieKiiDx Omar's Volta

  • Haha Omar has a wife

  • 3:06 that is jamming.

  • i bet that guy smells like beer

  • burps happen

  • or you could just be a group of amazing musicians that sound great live, not chopping some notes, or complaining about how one could have a bad singing day!

  • cool band, although there is nothing wrong musical theory and applying it to your band.

  • he said no one records like that but actually thats how a lot of opera's are structured, but its totally a great technique

  • that would be a strange way to record. But totally cool idea! TMV has changed music. Pretty B.A.

  • he def. has a good outlook on music.

im sure Fruciante has a lot to do with that.

  • yeah the 1st take and honoring mistakes thing is so frusciante

  • When did your grammar teacher died?

  • @hjstuckey Round about yesterday eve, when I swaffeled your mum. Why?

  • When did your spelling teacher die? Died is past tense.

  • @hjstuckey When did yours? Before you insult someone on their grammar, check your own.

  • @rollerblaker dude the joke was that i used the incorrected tense like he did maybe if you saw the original comment but i don't remember exactly what it was, cause it was a fucking year ago. Stop commenting on dead comments

  • they seem like really cool people you would have fun partying with.

  • Omar is such a genius. It doesn't surprise me that he records in such an untraditional manner. He tends to look at everything from an inverted perspective

  • So are they like the leaders of the band?

  • Omar pretty much does everything in the Mars Volta, except vocals, which are Cedric's responsibility. So yeah, they are the leaders.

  • films films films lol

  • i respect that their clever writers but if they used the experiences and skills of the musicians that they have in the band by letting them write their parts they wud be 100 times betta because lets face it the all the members are technically able it wud be amazing

  • Don't be such a jerk. Why does it matter whether they're homosexual or not? Their sexuality is no-one's business but their own.

  • @merrymadi also, in another interview, they talk about how they don't let too many guys backstage cuz they said it was a sausage fest around them all the time during tours and they want chicks. so... yea

  • @merrymadi to make it clear, once and for all. they're friends for life. they have wives.

  • "i hope there not"

Lol, why? What does that have to do with the style of music they play? They're just like that because they used to be opiate addicts.

  • Well, they both have girlfriends...might even be married now.

Dude...how could you judge somebody like that? Do you go like: "Elton John was pretty good on piano, but he was gay as hell so I can't listen to Tiny Dancer or I might turn gay." Grow up dude. Either you like the music or you don't. Don't get into their personal life.

  • @BigTymerPimp "'but he was gay as hell so I can't listen to Tiny Dancer or I might turn gay'"

  • I don't understand what you're saying. I was replying to some guy who said he hopes Cedric & Omar aren't gay because they "look and sound gay" to him apparently. Somehow that would make him not want to listen to their music.

I only used "Tiny Dancer" and Sir Elton John as an example. What are you saying? If you listen to Tiny Dancer you, yourself will turn gay?

  • Oh I got that part, I just thought that you used a pretty silly ass example, well, it made me laugh at least.

  • Oh, okay. Thanks for the laugh, it was meant to be funny. :)

  • THEY. ARE. PURE. BRILLIANCE.

  • Comment removed

  • follow the idea not the example man

  • Cedric got married!

  • yes, omar writes EVERYTHING in the music...these two are merely the frontmen of the band

  • Cedric writes the lyrics. Omar is just responsible for the melodic and instrumental parts of the music. Omar and Cedric are the Mars Volta. The other members are just performances. But at the same time Pridgen and Theodore were also a large part of the band as well.

  • so do omar and cedric write EVERYTHING in the music? drums, bass, keyboards etc? do the rest of the band have any credit lol? you never see them in any interview!

  • Why have I seen this same comment on a million different TMV interviews?

  • geniuses

  • I love Cedric's cute little pink belt. Haha.

  • Probably so, and I'm sure that's a lot of girls... (and maybe some guys). :D

  • Cedric and Omar left ATDI because being in that band was like being in kindergarten from the perspective of musical creativity.

They hated being in a generic punk band, where they couldn't improvise, and make new music.

Go listen to some songs by Jim's band Sleeper Car, if you think The Mars Volta sucks.

  • i like cedric alot!!!

  • Hopefully, Mars Vuelta da Mars Volta, jahahhah!

yeah, SLAP THAT S.....LO QUESEA, QUE SALGA, QUE SEA SUAVE.

  • Maybe the other artists and musicians aren't allowed to rehearse together because Omar and Cedric are two of the most egotistical persons in the business. Food for thought

  • so you've met them and talked to them and know exactly who they are???

    fag

  • No. You're right, i don't know who they REALLY are. I only know what i see on the internet and tv and other media outlets. What they put out there to see is what i base my opinion on. But yes, you can call me a fag and whatnot on the internet, but know that this is how i view them and no kid on the internet can take that from me. The truth of all of this is that At-The-Drive-In was a better band and these two left the band to start TMV because they couldn't force their thoughts on the others.

  • dang

you wrote a whole paragraph out of one question

i wonder why people are so sensitive these days and take everything so serious.

    Relax man. Its just youtube.

  • LOL. I'm not sure what you're doing on youtube, but i'm here because i'm bored and am not entirely convinced you know what you're talking about :D Text me back to keep me entertained.

  • i know exactly what youre talking about. you're the one sitting in front of the computer, just talking shit.

but the reality is, as soon as i walk away to go on with my life, im gonna completely forget about you and so will everyone else.

whatever i type or what you type or what anyone else on this website types doesn't even matter

    is that entertaining enough??

  • I love you. Entertainer

  • ohhh, good one

oh and everybody loves me! :)

have you heard the saying "arguing on the internet is like the special olympics... even if you win, you're still retarted"

    just wait a few years...

    whatever, nice talking to you

  • "At-The-Drive-In was a better band"

    That's subjective

    You're narrow minded

I look forward to your reply.

  • I'm saying that i believe sounds better. its a shame they split, because of said reasons above. I'm a big fan of TMV i'm not a fan of them two as persons.

  • cedric and omar built TMV from the ground up after they left ATDi. i think it's perfectly fine for them to have creative control over the band, and i don't think they're being egotistical. everyone in the band knows how things work, and from what i understand who ever omar is recording is always free to offer up suggestions about the music.

  • You can here many places in this video where omar says that the way that they record is against a musicians habit. Then Cedric chimes in with the, "thats what you sign up for in the band." This makes great music, but makes cedric and omar look like ego-tistic manics. I enjoy their music, i wouldn't want to know them though.

  • i just love the way cedric says next to nothing and just sits there looking unusually sexy for a bloke

  • Very interesting (the recording sequence) I think that I will try it. also, these guys must be my age, talking about Kiss, and the 8 track cassette. I am going on 47.

  • Omar's an amazingly prolific musician, he's in charge of the whole band and how they do things. He's 34 and Cedric is 35 =]

  • I am surprised that they talk aout the 80's, and such, I was in my early 20 back then. I guess they would have been in high school. I like how they are honest with the interviewer when asked questions. They just write what comes to them. Much like how I write.

  • cutest guys i have ever seen

  • wow... i knew omar was a musical genius but damn... lol. he is like the beethoven of this century.

  • @Imakid2000 hope his hearing organs remain intact

  • @Imakid2000 a better parallel is Frank Zappa.

  • did he say "votimation"?

    these guys are awesome

  • Who else thinks Omar needs to make a movie already?

And if he did the soundtrack too, it'd be the greatest film of all time.

  • he does make movies, dozens, 90% unreleased, just for his own therapy

  • I mean like a movie that goes in theaters, for all of us to see.

  • I don't think you understand how the Theater Circuit works

  • Probably not, but I'm sure if someone like him had a film that he wanted in theaters, he'd be able to do it.

  • I thought I was a pretty big fan, but listening to these guys talk makes me an even bigger fan. Love this band!

  • ....and Cedric is a midwife.

  • ~Those 2 are one good marriage. haha.

  • Omar = musical genius [.]

  • Omar = musical genius [.]

  • omars so cute!

  • do you just jaaaam them out bro?

  • Omar is todays Frank Zappa

    thats my opinion

    x

  • except he kicks zappas ass

  • uhhh. not quite. i love omar, but you can't kick zappa's ass. sorry.

  • if you would really know everything zappa has accomplished, you wouldn't say that.

  • Omar 0:22 - 0:30 is gold.

  • believe it or not it made him the man he is today

  • Makes me wonder why..

When i draw ANYTHING,the first thing that comes to my mind is Omar and Cedric lol.

  • wow this is amazing.

  • omar sounds like he has a cold here

    bzz bzz

  • couldnt have said it better cdrumz

  • THANK U SIR THANK U

  • i 2nd this!

  • dis foo is interviewing them like if there gonna say " Oh naw we just take a hit of crack and some acid and we play music" nigga was all suprised dat they are organized

  • as far as live i could see why so many niggas say dat about improvising but on albums everything sounds planned to me...if not then they would never give you dat feel they give you...

  • Please speak like you have some sense

  • he says votimation at one point

    i adore these guys

  • Interviews are awkward

  • omar at 7:04

    smashing

  • these guys are so rad

  • these are really really good videos. awesome interview. thanks alot for sharing this with us. :)

  • omg i have his shirt!
