  • love how the beach boys were all multi talented musicians. Fuck the beatles, I'm sick and tired of hearing people say "OHHHH THE BEACH BOYS WERE NEVER AS BIG AS THE BEATLES" well guess what they were BETTER then the beatles.

  • 0:06 "go play drums, Carl", that's funny.

  • They were a great band in this era including Brian who wrote Break Away the a side of this single. It was a peak.

  • Can anyone upload the record of this song?

  • I love the indian vibe to this song

  • great great song!

  • Denny forever...though he does look very uncomfortable. Love you, Denny!

  • at this time in the group, Denny (Dennis) was actually the "glue" of the band, , believe me drummerman knows......

  • I like the songs that aren't on the tip of the tongue of the Fun Fun Fun fan. I guess that I much prefer the non-Mike Love approach. His is to take a sockpuppet band out and reap benefits and stay in the public eye. I like the chances taken in the late 60's/early 70's as music became more hippyfied, and not so striped-shirted and Fun Fun Fun-ny.

  • Carson had nearly as many good acts -you just don't see them as the tapes are destroyed - as per some of the other shows as well..

  • There should be a huge plaque or statue in the RRHOF for Mike Douglas . He booked some great Bands in the 60s on his show at a time when Rock was almost invisible on prime time TV.

  • I absolutely love this song, Dennis's contributions to those "wilderness years" Beach Boys LPs are all terrific, & this is one of his best...

  • Lousy song. They needed Brian! Ther really couldn't write, or produce anything wothwhile when he wasn't in the picture. Sorry! The truth hurts!

  • @2010BeachBoy I agree with you on most of their songs from '67 onward, but NOT on this one! Try actually listening to the real song instead of this television broadcast. It's a GREAT song, dark sounding and progressive for The Beach Boys at this time in their career. As far as I'm concerned, The Beach Boys should have sounded like THIS after Brian let go of the reigns. This song shows off their vocal acrobatics while sounding heavy. In other words, hippies might have LIKED this

  • @2010BeachBoy ,they absolutely did not need Brian, great as he is the talent of the others was more than enough

  • @willsrings Oh let's not go THAT far. The Beach Boys DID need Brian, from '67 through to '69 they did, maybe not so much 1970 onward. The band needed "Smile" to be released (now all these years later IT FINALLY IS on Nov. 1st) so they could have moved into the fast lane with everybody else at that time, but they chose not to. They really never recovered from that blow. "Smiley Smile" was HORRIBLE, "Wild Honey" was out of step, "Friends" was slight, and "20/20" was even slighter.

  • @MattHatter

they never recovered from smile thats for sure, but smiley smile is cool because its so haunting and freaky, it is a psychedelic masterpiece, but it didnt attract a big audience which i understand. friends was full of good tunes but had som bad ones, the good leftovers made it into 20/20, but that was not a propper album. sunflower was great tho ;)

  • @2010BeachBoy It's not the truth. You're unfair to the others.

  • Rock On, Dennis!

  • fucking great!

  • Che, dejen hablar a Al!... Por una vez!

  • Carl, you did good!!

  • lol I love when Carl has to play drums

  • This is what makes them sound DIFFERENT then most of the stonedout crap of the time.....not because BW wasn't here ...but because they actually sang and harmonized and delved into new areas, creating their very own genre. Who sounded like this during this era ? nobody

  • what do we have against Mike Love?

    are you kidding?

    How about destroying "Smile"?

look at every crap album that the BBs did after he took control of the band (and made his thug brother their manager).

He destroyed this band and he and bruce to this day think the complete opposite.

And by the way, id rather have someone i care for have issues with booze than be in a cult like Mike - (outside of greed and jealousy, TM is his whole world)

  • @whatwouldbrianwilson Oh yeah. 'Wild Honey, 'Friends', '20/20', 'Sunflower', 'Surf's Up', 'Holland'; all crap, eh? Idiot. 'Smile' was never finished because Brian couldn't finish it. Mike didn't get it, but if Brian had've had the ability to finish it, he would have done.

  • they arent the same it seems without brian though...they sound like all the other mediocre band at this time without him...

  • omg at the moronic cameramen on the mike douglas show! >:( we might want to see some close ups sometimes, i have no idea what dennis even looks like in this clip :/

  • ahhh, dennis is dang cool, so is carl.

  • xD Carl on the drums..... in 1977 he played also the Organ...he´s got talent....miss you Carl:((

  • Didn´t know that Carl could play Drums...

  • Ugh.

Mike Love you ugly, talentless bastard.

  • what do you have against Mike Love? It seems to me he is sober in every interview I see which is more than I can say for Dennis and Brian and Carl seems out of it most of the time too. I love their music but let's be honest here...

  • there ain't no blues! Miss ya Denny

  • its a shame that the beach boys were not as popular at this time, they were still making great music

  • @chakahfatah its cuz people loved their surf music hence the name the *beach boys* when they stepped into more folky stuff like this they changed A LOT. it started for real around Pet Sounds, but man.. that was a big leap from the surf and hot-rod music to more calm and folky music...

  • The interplay with Mike and Dennis is really cool. THis would be a classic if it was filmed correctly.

  • Might has well have been a camcorder on a tripod. They are singing to the original backing track. Carl of course can not play drums which is why he is hidden behind the others. Great to see Dennis in the spotlight.

  • How do you know that Carl couldn't play the drums.

  • carl played drums in the "never learn not to love" video as well. probably to a backing track as well, but we was really getting into it

  • Celebrate the News! Live! Amazing...

  • The footage quality violates the Geneva Convention!

  • The footage quality violates the Geneva Convention!

  • That was awesome. Dennis was really one hell of a talented guy!!

  • Great, I love this song and this is a quite good and rare performance. Dennis was awesome, and cool to see Carl play the skins. Wonder who does that "hello" and the beginning.

  • Dennis

  • i miss dennis and carl they were really nice guys who were part of one the greatest american bands ever

  • Bruce looks like Johnny Cash from a distance.

  • That was f*cking sweet! Never seen a performance of that rare Dennis classic! With Carl on drums no less!!! Thanks so much.

  • The Mike Douglas show was an appallingly produced travesty! What the hell is wrong with them! Plenty of close ups while Carl was singing, and just one shitty long distance shot of Dennis, the best looking band member! They also did a really shit job of miking up Moby Grapes vocals...SACK THE PRODUCER!
