Ouch! This is why I always opposed tuning an automatic and smg, the clutche packs, drums, and so on are not developed to take anymore power than factory. The reason you don't see other E9X 335i trannies going out is cause the other 335i owners get a performance valve-body at most they'll get a performance rebuild kit with stronger drums, clutch packs, and such. Manual or go home. Cheap to fix, stronger than other transmission and can take the power and abuse.
@IPGAuto nobody has yet to "upgrade" the ZF transmission on the 335i. everyone running high boost has been just fine. even hotrod182's transmission never skipped a step again :)
@DavidKneiber - Ok. Ask some E9X N54-T owners on E46Fanatics, BimmerFest, MFest.. they will all tell you they've hit some kind of issue. Slipping. Failure. Rebuild. Or just straight sold the car.
hotrod182 said that this was a failsafe mode where the transmission shifted into 3rd gear. he also said he's done 30+ runs after this incident with no problem what-so-ever. it's nice to know the facts!
Did the engine actually explode? It sounded like it stayed together at ~8500 rpm although the tranny must have been seriously trashed to select 3rd at such a high road speed for apparently no reason But I guess that's what happens when you double the power output and unplug all sorts of stuff.
@bulegold56 Dude the results show what happens when you run 500WHP+ on an Auto Transmission. Do some research. BMW SA are some joe shmo that recommends when you should reschedule your next appointment and has no credibility in this argument because of it. Thanks.
@bulegold56 Oh now you change your tune. First arguement suggest that anything over 12.5 PSI will grenade the transmission. You clarify by that by seeking the credibility of someone who schedules your oil changes. Then your now stating that there are automatics that can handle 500-700 HP... WOW and you fail to mention which if any of those are from BMW or why that matters in the argument of 12.5 PSI.
@bulegold56 Then you take into account how your a credible source cause you received a joke degree and will spend the rest of your life covered in grease and hte only thing you can make is blanket statements about how there is an auto tranny out there that can handle more power, and if you run more then 12.5 PSI your tranny blows up. What you fail to realize is you have no idea about BMW more then anyone else......

im sure ur transmission was finished after this right? did bmw fix it?

did you ever fix your tranny or did you get rid of this car for the 335d in your other vids?

Just listen to how the tranny shifted to M2-M3-M4 thats not normal for a Tranny on the 35i engine.

He was running the Vishnu Proceed at the time, thats why it messed up.
BTW 12.5 psi is perfectly safe its the N02 that starts to cause problems

Yikes. That's what you get for getting tiptronic :\. Should have went standard.

@kushnugz Nah i think his world record breaking steptronic transmission is just fine =P.

@sa8901 It's hard to say really. When I see stuff like THAT happen it makes me cringe.

Holy crap- that was like 8500 rpm. Serious pucker-factor there. So, instead of shifting 4-5 it looks like it went 4-3.
I'd try to get a better understanding of how these ZF's shift. Maybe there is some kind of clutch band or something in there that is worn out.

How comforting was it to see that "gear" warning light come on? LOL

I've been debating on fitting a JB3 to my 335 for quite some time...
My skepticism is justified now.
N54's aren't originally designed to consistently go above 12.5 lbs of boost.
Obviously your tranny is feeling the consequences, rather pricey to replace too.
Easy/cheap horsepower is always tempting. However, this is a classic case and point of "to good to be true."

@bulegold56 12.5 PSI is a joke. Hotrod is known to run plenty more then that and hes got juice now with a lot of abuse on a track too.

@MrMhmm
The results speak for themselves don't they...
Yeah, temporarily, he's increasing the performance significantly!
Oh but look! his transmission failed.
btw, the 12.5 PSI fact came from a BMW SA.

@MrMhmm
Several automatics can handle 500-600-700 HP.
Again though, this particular transmission is only designed to handle the output of minor modifications to the N54.
Hints Dinan Stage 1, 2, 3.
Now as far as credibility is concerned... I just received my ASE Certification two months ago.
I pretty much know BMWs better than anyone.
BMW service techs are amongst the best and most talented in the world. I did an internship last year at Valley BMW in Roanoke, VA.
They're very honest.

@bulegold56, jb3 wasn't the only thing he had in the car. JB3 alone will not do this to your internals
MIZUnoTATSU 1 year ago
@bulegold56 I think the best and safest way to go is through Dinan. Don't they increase the boost from 8.8 to over 13 psi with their stage 3?
