fantastic athlete? Scientific American disagree strongly with you. go look at their June 96 edition page 47-49 : LA's lactate threshold was at a dismal 75%. Which may not be so bad for a 1-day racer, but obviously totally inadequate for a TdF winner
Velocitynation website has a great interview with Ashenden about the EPO of Lance's 1999 TDF.
Conclusion is very clear: he was doped 6 (higher than UCI threshold) samples with remote EPO (rEPO)
Lance has an average hematocrit of 41% but he raced during his 1999-2005 TDF with 48-49% only attainable with blood manipulation (EPO or blood transfusion).
@percdann An athlete unable to get a significant result on his 4 first TDF and unable to climb.
How can he change his poor lactate threshold measured in 1996 by USADA without doping?
go look at Scientific American June 96 page 47-49 : LA's lactate threshold was at a dismal 75%. Which may not be so bad for a 1-day racer, but obviously totally inadequate for a TdF winner
How about looking at in terms of fibre physiology, he was young - lots of fast twitch poor endurance event results...later on more slow twitch (muscle development) and better results. Also after the cancer he was always going to be a better climber. I Myself am 62kg and naturally a good climber. His body diminished and when it was a big chunk lighter. Big improvement. It is completely possible to improve LT substantially??!! Why not? I have done myself! And anyway, its endurance not a 400m run.
Look at his physique?? Theres a clear weight loss, the effects of what he has had are substantial enough. What is your definition of 25-30 percent? Of what? In terms of watts? Like a loss of body mass and build depletion while maintaining power doesnt have to be because of doping. Boxers regularly keep power moving weights. A 3 percent gain is huge, but that isnt true that it has to be because of doping. Lets look at EPO - Levels can be increased through more then just doping.
Its all very easy to say he was a cheat and on EPO, and while I would be skeptical that he is. Its not a sure thing. I dont know. YOU dont know. LA does. Thats it. If you want to speculate about with hermatocrit and VO2 and EPO thats fine. But theres more to life then this. For the record, even using echinacea can inprove erythropoitein values.
Yea 79-74 is quite a substantial loss! I lost less then that and improved my long distance running by HUGE chunks. As for the power, why do you find it hard to believe that people can improve to such a level??

Evan Smith sure gave Lance cream puff questions, didn't he? Here's some quality journalism... "It's hard to imagine the other side -if there is another side- of this ballot initiative."
Not too hard for me to imagine!
At least Lance mentioned -albeit briefly and incompletely- the arguments of the opposition.
we have all been lied too. pharms dont want to cure cancer simply because they make too much money of of it. cancer is not a disease! its a vitamin b17 deficiency. taking apricot seens( sends contain potent amounts of B17) stops tumor growth and 97% of the time completly eliminates it. also becks protocol also cures, yes CURES cancer, f*ck the FDA. we made a big mistake giving the government power over our food and drugs.
Good for Lance for mentioning the anti-smoking/cigarettes aspect right off the back and for making a point about the income / access to care issues. And for hammering home the notion of PREVENTION as a means for helping humanity along in its way to a cure!!! Indeed, Lance you are quite eloquent on the subject.
Michael Phelps could take a page out of that book. [Too many kids look up to athletes for their achievements and accomplishments and he's out sucking smoke down into his lungs and getting high on illegal stuff! Then cryin about losing endorsements.]

its good to know he overcame the disease, however he's a cheater, thats the true. He got doped in 1999 for the tour in france. Everybody knows it, CHEATER!
well if the other riders are eating energy drinks, don't you think he should also eat an energy drink. and he didn't get proven to have used any drugs. the readings will show normal body chemicals produced by your immune system, and becuase every body is different sometimes these result will vary. Its just that some people believe the levels found in the blood to be suspect, when they quite rightly could have been normal.
What a load of... he got tested poisitive for a cream he was using for saddle sore. And, just for your record and everybody else's, it wasn't considered in the perfomance enhancing range. Ok?
The French wanted to find something desperately on him in '99 but couldn't find anything. For someone who had such advanced cancer, and had so many cycles of chemo, for him to dope on EPO is out of the question. Seriously, do some research.
michy7x, perhaps you should be the one doing the research. Reading books written by the man himself does not make you an expert in the field. You think 'its not about the bike' offers an objective insight into Lance's doping history??? Theres plenty of evidence proving lance is a doper. What do you think caused his cancer in the first place? Perhaps you could start with the lequipe article titled 'the lie of lance armstrong' and go from there. You won't like what you find. I know I didn't.
He's a fighter. He is also a natural leader. He was born ready to 'lead'. He is not the type of person whom you would pick to play the supporting role. He is where he needs to be to be the best he can be. Let's just let him do what he does best. All we have to do is be there for him.

He never became lighter as rider, even if he had be lighter by 2or 3% that would never explain his 25-30% improvement of power!
For world elite athlete, a 3% improvement is HUGE and very difficult to obtain! All big improvements have always been the results of doping.

Pictures show he never lost a lot of weight, and according the "study" of Dr. Edward F. Coyle (University of Texas) :
* 11/1992 : 78,9 kg
* 01/1993 : 76,5 kg
* 09/1993 : 75,1 kg
* 08/1997 : 79,5 kg
* 09/1999 : 79,7 kg
Lance conceded during SCA hearing that his weight at TDF was around 74kg and more!
From 1993 to 1996, never Lance was able to maintain an average higher than 370 "Porteauleau" Watts. Then since 1999 he was able to raise 450 watts!
