@harperofthewiz :-)the thing on her head is called Mahkoot(mukut). It is made of sol(pronounced sole), a plant core. Cutting and moulding sol into mukuts is a delicate art in puri(orissa) and in West Bengal. The Bengalis use beautiful sol headgears as Topor and mukut for groom and the bride respectively. Kindly search odissi in wikipedia for mor information.
@MrDragon186 She is not blessing the statue. It is just an image of Jagannath, the deity who protects Puri, and much of Orissa where this dance originates. She is offering flowers as a form of tribute. The model for much of the Hindu ceremonies is the royal court, and the temple is the royal court of the deity. Kings and queens were welcome and hailed by showers of flowers cascading above and around them. Similarly, offerings of flowers welcome the spirit of the deity to the performance.
One of the most unique features of Odissi is how the lower and middle parts of the dancer's body move independent of each other. It's fascinating what a sense of balance they have
I was fortunate enough to take a couple of workshops with her. They were all that you would have imagined them to be. Absolutely, 100% educational and inspiring.
