  • lol it would look so awkward if you were playing sonic 3 and knuckles XD

  • I wanted this in 8th grade (1995). Thinking back; it would be a waste of money, seeing as though we would only go out of state a few times a year.

  • I've had a Nomad for years. It's great as long as you use an AC adapter. I have mine next to my recliner. Don't bother with the battery pack, as it will eat them alive.

  • That's pretty awesome how you don't have to buy separate games.

  • would have been cool IF it had a much longer battery, and he is just measuring the battery life with MODERN batteries, when the nomad was out on the market it was only 30 minutes of battery life, really............so it was not worth it to buy this

  • Neat, but unless it can play 32x games, think I'll just stick to the emulator on my PSP. Great review though =]

  • The resolution on this ding-dong is saaack

  • Truxton looks like shit

  • Nomad VS Supaboy. Who will last ?

  • This dude REALLY loves Truxton.

  • Love the show, Mark. If you want to get the most from that Nomad I'd recommend getting the lcd screen replaced and getting a rebuilt rechargeable battery to power it. With those two modifications you'll get great screen resolution and about 8.5 hours of battery life.

  • Sound with headphones is loud enough to go def

  • I can't help but respect how Sega would always try something new, even if sadly they rarely succeeded.

It was a company with great ideas but bad marketing and even worse timing.

  • @Vebinz Yeah,Sega and Nintendo are the best game companies out there IMO.

  • TRUXTON

  • I want one

  • i used to have the nomad. man, this was the shit when i was young :)

even though by today's standards it has pathetic battery life. when i was growing up though this was super high tech :)

  • you get so close to beating a game and then your battery dies..wa wa waaa. lol

  • could you play Japanese genesis games on the nomad? id be interested in getting one to try out games from all regions.

  • @knicknac95 Its based on the Model 2, so....no.

Get a "HD" Graphics model Genesis 1 if you want to do some importing as that one has no lockout chip.

  • this guy is the egon spengler of video game reviewers

  • I commented saying that this thing is worse than the DS. That wasn't fair at all.

  • I can't believe it. I have found a game console that's worse than the DS!

  • Does it play Sega Master Drive games too? The 8 bit console for Sega

  • @RENZDOGG Master system. It probably can but you'd need the adapter that you had to put into the Genesis to get it to work. And that adapter was huge. The Game Gear was essentially a portable Master System, you're better off finding the adapter for one of those, and using one of those for Master System on the move. It was designed for it.

  • Coolest part about the nomad is it had that output to allow you to play the games on any tv. I have one but the brightness button feel into the console and now it won't turn on. I wish someone could fix it.

  • The Nomad came out about the same time PS1 and Saturn Did and the Sega Genesis was already dying so no one really paid attention to it (who would with 32bit consoles the new craze). I got a Nomad for Christmas in 95 and ironically I still play it to this day. What was cool about it is that you didn't have to buy games for it like the game gear you could play your Genesis games on it. So if you were trying to beat that one game and it was time to visit Grandma's you could just take it with you.

  • I still have my Sega Nomad and it still works! With the rechargeable battery pack it would last longer than a hour. I did take that with me on the go when I was a kid. Just get yourself a book bag put the Nomad in their with the games you want to play and there you go. I know that is crazy talk now but back in day you did what you had to do.

  • Why dosen't Sony create something like this for PS3? I'd like to carry Grand Theft Auto IV around on a small handheld device, or Mortal Kombat, or NFS:Shift.

  • @KrazyKrippler

    It's called the vita

  • @KrazyKrippler i think the vita does that

  • @KrazyKrippler It takes a lot of effort to shrink a console into a handheld. The Nomad came out a long time after the original Genesis. Keep in mind during the time between The Genesis and the Nomad, countless improvements were made in shrinking processors down to the size were more familiar with today. Sony is working on this though- I guess you haven't heard about the PSP Vita. Check it out, I'm sure there's a few videos about it here on youtube.

  • looks like a something my Internet provider brought to troubleshoot my net connection o_O

  • Who wants to bet Mark starts his days with that in the toilet? Truxton in the Nomad ftw.

  • do u have pac man

  • Never had the Sega Nomad, only the Game Gear...and Genesis of course. How much did the Nomad and Game Gear cost back in the day?? I was too little to care before but now I'm just curious LOL.

  • is that gamester81 speaking? :3

  • purchased mine from wal-mart back in the day for 30 dollars brand new.

  • dont forget that badass backlit screen

  • As much as I love SEGA, it is easy to see why they're in the position they are in today. I mean, what kind of incompetent company would green light a product like the Nomad? It does nothing that a non-portable machine can do and it doesn't do anything a portable machine should do.

  • @fcukugimmeausername Actually it could do alot of the same stuff as a regular Genesis, it could be connected to a TV and you could plug in controllers, not to mention playing all of the games of course. If it had been released in Europe I would have sold my MegaDrive for one.

  • Imagine this thing with Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles! XD

  • @HEDGurrection I have one and I can confirm that sir is an amazing experience.

  • @HEDGurrection haha that's what I have in mine right now. I

  • what you need is a car adapter.

  • The nomad was sold exclusively from Toys R us....

  • Cool, didnt know about this console.

  • I had a Nomad but I had to sell it :(. I just built up my Genesis collection again and now I am thinking about picking up another Nomad. I have to agree about the controls. The Nomad had the best d-pad of any portable and nice solid buttons. Smart phones may be smaller but the "virtual" controls are terrible. :(

  • Sega knows their d-pads, they should teach the remaining console manufacturers how it's done right.

  • @humppamonsteri other than nintendo their d-pads kick ass

  • This is better than the NGP

  • man if nintendo did this with their super nintendo or n64 games i would shat myself... i know i can use an emulator on my mobile phone, and could even connect a wiimote to it via bluetooth but still it would be cool to have a portable n64, portable super nintendo or even a portable regular nintendo

  • @morange492 They have had a ton of them that people have created a few have been even mass marketed but I ordered the most recent one if you want info on the new portable super Nintendo that you can also plug into your tv and play your games that way, just hit me up.

  • THIS THING IS FRKIN AWESOME!

  • South Park - ONLY ON COMEDY CENTRAL

  • What if Nintendo did this with that 64

  • Does anyone know if I can just leave the power adapter plugged in, because I have one of these things and no batter pack. I want to use it as my Genesis console and not have to buy one. HELP!

  • @naptimewithturtles2 i am prity sure you can

  • Super Hang On an Outrun do linke surprisingly nice.

Now the Question is, does it work with the 32X? Mark, we need an Answer!

  • @t0aster28 no

  • why dont they just call it sega genesis portable

  • It's the PSP of its time lol

  • Needs an ios 5.0.2 update more than the iPhone 4S

  • my screem is really bad then

  • if you could plug this into the tv and controllers.. why would you even need a genisis.. its like the super nintendo and the new supa boy.

  • I'm getting a GenMobile for Christmas. It's gonna be awesome!

  • I wonder if you could open up a Sega Nomad and Game Gear and replace the screens with the newer Active Matrix LCD screens. I don't think WVGA would work, but it is an interesting idea I have if I do say so myself.

  • I thought this thing was amazing when it came out. I would have bought one when it came out, however none of the stores in my town sold one.

Still, to play the Sonic games, Street Fighter 2, and Mortal Kombats, on the go in 1995, would totally make all my friends jealous.

It is too bad Nintendo doesn't take a page from this, and release something today, that would play all these games, with a Virtual Console type setup.

  • Lucky!

  • *Allstate commercial shows mayhem screaming mommy* SHUT UP MAYHEM MOMMYS WATCHING A GAME REVIEW WHILE DRIVING!!!!!

  • OMFG STRIDER IS THE SHIT!!!!!111

  • I would carry around that battery guzzler. Fuck the Ipod

  • @ComandoIvan3 Yeah fuck apple to!

  • @ComandoIvan3 Yeah I jailbroke my ipod cuz they're not gonna force me to use that pos bloatware (fu itunes). The only reason I have it is cuz it was free. I must admit though I'd love to have an ipod touch (jailbroke of course).

  • Love how I can just play any Genesis game on my iTouch nowadays without hulking around that battery guzzler. We are so spoiled.

  • @glitchedgamer the ipod sucks its not even a console

  • @nkmetossa Uh, I never said it was.

  • @glitchedgamer iPod Touch*

  • @glitchedgamer I didn't mean to sound like I was dismissing the Nomad. I was just pointing out how far technology has come. Trust, I have much more respect for the old school than the gaming industry today.

  • @glitchedgamer Actually with the charge pack, compared to playing the games with an iPhone, the battery life is about equal.

  • @glitchedgamer What's an iTouch? No such product exists.

    It's called an iPod touch.

It's a branch of the iPod hardware series.

If you are going to be that in love with your device, at least call it by its actual name and not some idiotic term made up by the masses of idiots.

This helpful message brought to you by logic. Use it sometimes!

  • @kurisux Well excuse me, Princess

  • @glitchedgamer Haha, I see what you did there. :)

  • Comment removed

  • hmm.... i wonder if you could plug a 32x into this and use it...

  • @NintendoFanboy1235 Unfortunately, you can't. It isn't compatible. But I gotta admit, being able to play Virtua Fighter 32X anywhere would rock.

  • dear Mark,

  • you dont need any hand held console than the psp, with it you can play all your favourite games from nes, snes, gb, gba, sega mastersystem, genesis, game gear, sega cd! and you can also play it on the tv. you just need to put a cfw that is very very easy

  • after this vid I downloaded Truxton from romhustler, good game

  • out run!!!

  • Hey guys, I think Mark likes Truxton, what do you think?

  • @LegoWaffles11 why would't he. That game kicks ass

  • Super hang on had such awesome music

  • psp fits in my pocket

  • hefty

  • Can you plug SEGA 32X there :\ ???

  • @YamatoSonic64 mostly likely no

  • @YamatoSonic64 Not sure, but the 32X needs to be plugged into a wall anyway :P

  • But can you use the power base converter or 32x with the Nomad?

  • They need to remake this with better battery life and a smaller build. Give it an option to play on the television and a controler port and it can be a tiny Genesis.

  • i'm thinking about a super nintendo but idk, maybe a wii

  • can you smell things with your nose?

  • What's that 16 bit reggae music playing?

  • Cleaned your game cartridge(s) by using a Q-tip & some 91% alcohol on the contacts, then your games won't stop when you bump the cartridge. That's what I did and now it's solid, as long as it doesn't get pulled outwards.

I got my Nomad for about $66 total. I also have a few games for it. :)

I use NiMH rechargeable AA batteries, I have 12 so I can switch 6 out when needed. I'm not exactly sure how long it lasts.

  • @Racecar564 Excuse the spelling error. <_<

  • I like both sega and nintendo, but i am a sega guy and i think it's awesome sega made this! I never had one but you never saw nintendo back in the day make a portable snes did you!

  • can it plug a Atari 2600 Controller in the nomad

  • @Bulkymuscleman Yes!, But only for the second player.

  • HOLY FUCKKKK ITS BACKLIT I HAVE TO GET THISSSS

  • I was dissapointed that he didn't shove a 32x in the cartridge slot for shits and giggles.

  • @XxxBOMBTRACKxxX Does it work?

  • @cas99f -- LOL no I was just kidding.

  • i have one, though it wont hold a charge, how can i fix this

  • i bought a nomad very bright for 80 bucks

  • oh, btw. there's the inspiration for the wiiU controller.

  • why haven't i ever hear of this console?

    when was this released?

  • was not aware that there were so many sarcastic assholes on youtube i asked a simple question and sarcasm erupts WTF

  • I got a Sega Nomad at a flea market for only $2! :D

  • Dude, there are some other games for Mega Drive. It's not just the stupid Truxton

  • @kolestral Disrespecting Truxton will not be tolerated!

  • @mariobrosfan1995 What can you possibly do about it?

  • @kolestral Ahh get over yourself son I was just kidding.

  • @mariobrosfan1995 Hahaha you're maybe not even 30 but you're calling me "son"? Grow up, sonny.

  • @kolestral How do I know you're really 35 and not really a secret 5 year Old working for Fidel Castro to destroy JFK and besides you're the one who couldn't take a joke so you grow up Sonny boy. Oh and have a nice day.

  • @mariobrosfan1995 Hahahah who said i'm 35, kido?

  • @kolestral I dunno who said it?

  • So basically there is no point in buying this if you own a Genesis. It's not comfortable to take it out with you and the battery lasts 1 hour? Bad screen and bad audio quality? Nah just stick to the Genesis.

  • hmm seems like it would be clumsy wthe sonic 3 and knuckles

  • It looks large but it was portable enough for the time. However, it would've fit in most kid's schoolbags, it would've been great for long car trips. I kept my original Atari Lynx in my schoolbag along with a Walkman and a couple tapes through my elementary/primary school years.

  • That background music rocks!

Which I could go back in time and give myself a PSP

  • O boy a mobile genesis with high battery usuage, crappy sound, easily freezes, bad picture quality, who can ask for more??

  • @sclf They should call it sega Umad

  • @bissenvissen U MADBRO.

  • lacks about test it on tv...

  • that must drain battery's like a mother fucker!

  • PSP of the 90s

  • Does the Nomad have a TV tuner like the Game Gear did?

  • @Damauveropolis

If the Sega Genesis did then yes, I dont think so.

remember its a portable sega genesis

and since the sega was HOOKED to a tv, i doubt it had a tuner lol.

  • Kickin back with some Truxton.

  • Truxton YEAH

  • Fuck ads

  • @arcticridge try adblock

  • @arcticridge

    Adblock plus ;)

  • @fearlessturk changed the way I surf youtube

  • Fuck yeah, Truxton!!!

  • The sound must be crap due to its age & overuse, just try one which is in better condition. The capacitors on its (and the Game Gear's) sound board tend to die off after a while, and it makes the sound distorted. Or just simply total silent.

Also true for the screen, don't say "the Nomad is no better than the Game Gear" just because you haven't found one in good condition.

  • Man, the memories are starting to come back to me. I made all my friends jelly with this as a kid lol. I remember i used to charge a dollar when people would want to play it during recess so i could buy batteries for that beast.

  • Lord Karnage approves

  • i dare anybody to try and play x-men on this

  • Reminds me of the wii u controller

  • @TheBritishSonic This was the first time you saw a handheld did you...

  • @AMYuntold urm..yes..it was

  • damn i so want that fcking sega :D

  • You say truxton funny

  • @noodleking456 How does he say it funny?

  • I know this won't work, but I want a portable 32X!!!

  • Hey I might buy one of these does anyone know if itll work with duracell rechargable batteries, there AA size and i think there 1.2 volts,

  • lol I remember having this

  • 15 people Nintendon't.

  • 2 player can be played without a tv

  • play some TRUGSTON!

  • شن

  • GenMobile is superior. This looks pretty cool too, though. Nice ergonomic design. :)

  • i wish i had one of these... unfortunately they're really hard to find as far as i know.

also i noticed that there is an S-Video port on it, so you probably could fit a 32x on there. :D

  • dang those ads.

  • the best d-pad and designed buttons for a hand held system ever made!!!

  • Dose this Play 32x and sega cd games

  • do not crash ir for fun :/

  • Holy shit. It would be more practical to just get an emulator for your phone or PSP/DS or something.

  • ab xy anyone? does this seem familiar? (xbox)

  • when was there ads in youtube..

  • the sega nomad looks almost like a camera...the cylinder-like grip on the left side and the screen and buttons...well, a large, unportable, ungainly and unsightly camera, at best...

but the nomad still kicks butt!
