I've had a Nomad for years. It's great as long as you use an AC adapter. I have mine next to my recliner. Don't bother with the battery pack, as it will eat them alive.
would have been cool IF it had a much longer battery, and he is just measuring the battery life with MODERN batteries, when the nomad was out on the market it was only 30 minutes of battery life, really............so it was not worth it to buy this
Love the show, Mark. If you want to get the most from that Nomad I'd recommend getting the lcd screen replaced and getting a rebuilt rechargeable battery to power it. With those two modifications you'll get great screen resolution and about 8.5 hours of battery life.
I use the Gensoid emulator on my Droid Evo and this video sure brought back memories! My mom was kind of a bitch when I was a little kid and never wanted me to have video games because they "turned your brains into mush" hahaha. Fortunately, my dad had my back and told her to shut up. The compromise was that she didn't want the TV "tied up" with a regular console, so I had to get a handheld and the Nomad ended up being my first system.
@RENZDOGG Master system. It probably can but you'd need the adapter that you had to put into the Genesis to get it to work. And that adapter was huge. The Game Gear was essentially a portable Master System, you're better off finding the adapter for one of those, and using one of those for Master System on the move. It was designed for it.
Coolest part about the nomad is it had that output to allow you to play the games on any tv. I have one but the brightness button feel into the console and now it won't turn on. I wish someone could fix it.
The Nomad came out about the same time PS1 and Saturn Did and the Sega Genesis was already dying so no one really paid attention to it (who would with 32bit consoles the new craze). I got a Nomad for Christmas in 95 and ironically I still play it to this day. What was cool about it is that you didn't have to buy games for it like the game gear you could play your Genesis games on it. So if you were trying to beat that one game and it was time to visit Grandma's you could just take it with you.
I still have my Sega Nomad and it still works! With the rechargeable battery pack it would last longer than a hour. I did take that with me on the go when I was a kid. Just get yourself a book bag put the Nomad in their with the games you want to play and there you go. I know that is crazy talk now but back in day you did what you had to do.
Why dosen't Sony create something like this for PS3? I'd like to carry Grand Theft Auto IV around on a small handheld device, or Mortal Kombat, or NFS:Shift.
@KrazyKrippler It takes a lot of effort to shrink a console into a handheld. The Nomad came out a long time after the original Genesis. Keep in mind during the time between The Genesis and the Nomad, countless improvements were made in shrinking processors down to the size were more familiar with today. Sony is working on this though- I guess you haven't heard about the PSP Vita. Check it out, I'm sure there's a few videos about it here on youtube.
Never had the Sega Nomad, only the Game Gear...and Genesis of course. How much did the Nomad and Game Gear cost back in the day?? I was too little to care before but now I'm just curious LOL.
As much as I love SEGA, it is easy to see why they're in the position they are in today. I mean, what kind of incompetent company would green light a product like the Nomad? It does nothing that a non-portable machine can do and it doesn't do anything a portable machine should do.
@fcukugimmeausername Actually it could do alot of the same stuff as a regular Genesis, it could be connected to a TV and you could plug in controllers, not to mention playing all of the games of course. If it had been released in Europe I would have sold my MegaDrive for one.
I had a Nomad but I had to sell it :(. I just built up my Genesis collection again and now I am thinking about picking up another Nomad. I have to agree about the controls. The Nomad had the best d-pad of any portable and nice solid buttons. Smart phones may be smaller but the "virtual" controls are terrible. :(
man if nintendo did this with their super nintendo or n64 games i would shat myself... i know i can use an emulator on my mobile phone, and could even connect a wiimote to it via bluetooth but still it would be cool to have a portable n64, portable super nintendo or even a portable regular nintendo
@morange492 They have had a ton of them that people have created a few have been even mass marketed but I ordered the most recent one if you want info on the new portable super Nintendo that you can also plug into your tv and play your games that way, just hit me up.
Does anyone know if I can just leave the power adapter plugged in, because I have one of these things and no batter pack. I want to use it as my Genesis console and not have to buy one. HELP!
I wonder if you could open up a Sega Nomad and Game Gear and replace the screens with the newer Active Matrix LCD screens. I don't think WVGA would work, but it is an interesting idea I have if I do say so myself.
@ComandoIvan3 Yeah I jailbroke my ipod cuz they're not gonna force me to use that pos bloatware (fu itunes). The only reason I have it is cuz it was free. I must admit though I'd love to have an ipod touch (jailbroke of course).
@glitchedgamer I didn't mean to sound like I was dismissing the Nomad. I was just pointing out how far technology has come. Trust, I have much more respect for the old school than the gaming industry today.
you dont need any hand held console than the psp, with it you can play all your favourite games from nes, snes, gb, gba, sega mastersystem, genesis, game gear, sega cd! and you can also play it on the tv. you just need to put a cfw that is very very easy
They need to remake this with better battery life and a smaller build. Give it an option to play on the television and a controler port and it can be a tiny Genesis.
Cleaned your game cartridge(s) by using a Q-tip & some 91% alcohol on the contacts, then your games won't stop when you bump the cartridge. That's what I did and now it's solid, as long as it doesn't get pulled outwards.
I got my Nomad for about $66 total. I also have a few games for it. :)
I use NiMH rechargeable AA batteries, I have 12 so I can switch 6 out when needed. I'm not exactly sure how long it lasts.
I like both sega and nintendo, but i am a sega guy and i think it's awesome sega made this! I never had one but you never saw nintendo back in the day make a portable snes did you!
@kolestral How do I know you're really 35 and not really a secret 5 year Old working for Fidel Castro to destroy JFK and besides you're the one who couldn't take a joke so you grow up Sonny boy. Oh and have a nice day.
So basically there is no point in buying this if you own a Genesis. It's not comfortable to take it out with you and the battery lasts 1 hour? Bad screen and bad audio quality? Nah just stick to the Genesis.
It looks large but it was portable enough for the time. However, it would've fit in most kid's schoolbags, it would've been great for long car trips. I kept my original Atari Lynx in my schoolbag along with a Walkman and a couple tapes through my elementary/primary school years.
The sound must be crap due to its age & overuse, just try one which is in better condition. The capacitors on its (and the Game Gear's) sound board tend to die off after a while, and it makes the sound distorted. Or just simply total silent.

the sega nomad looks almost like a camera...the cylinder-like grip on the left side and the screen and buttons...well, a large, unportable, ungainly and unsightly camera, at best...
lol it would look so awkward if you were playing sonic 3 and knuckles XD

i wish i had one of these... unfortunately they're really hard to find as far as i know.
also i noticed that there is an S-Video port on it, so you probably could fit a 32x on there. :D

the sega nomad looks almost like a camera...the cylinder-like grip on the left side and the screen and buttons...well, a large, unportable, ungainly and unsightly camera, at best...
