I've been reminded here in the turtle cognition lab that our turtles do turn themselves over frequently, but in my hands: in excitement, "dancing," turning over and over; or stretching out for a plastron ("belly") rub. I meant in the preceding to say that I saw the box turtle turn herself upside down when on the ground.
Only once have I seen a turtle turn herself upside down. She was a visiting eastern box turtle attacked by an ornate box turtle male in the way of box turtle males with a mind to mating. He tried to right her, without success. How did this tortoise turn turtle? or was turned turtle? Watching the end of this movie, it looks as though the helping turtle had the same motivation as the ornate box turtle male. He follows her in a plodding following typical of early stages in tortoise courting.
