Yes, I would recommend the mandolin as a refreshing alternative to guitar. I played guitar for years before discovering the mandolin. But as important as learning another stringed instrument, it's crucial to listen (and truly enjoy) mandolin songs. In my humble opinion, it's always important to have that 'love for a song' and even 'love for the mandolin sound' that ultimately drives you to the patient work of learning the particulars of songs. I love the sound of a mandolin.
thank you SO MUCH for posting this! It's great for beginners..like me! @lwillis912 , I'm in sortof the same boat: My mandolin is my great grandfathers, and I just got it re-strung and am beginning to play! I can't wait until I improve. Again, thanks! It's so much fun playing this blues shuffle
HEY MAN, it`s cool, but search in youtube for "ARMANDINHO MACEDO" the greatest brazilian musician, with all respect......the best mandolinist in the world hahaha
here in brazil mandolins are named "bandolin" and he play another instrument >>>>"GUITARRA BAIANA" search for.....
Yes it does. I think mandolin is easier after playing guitar for years . . . I've learned how to play mandolin more quickly than I did guitar. The single note runs make more sense and follow a more logical pattern than on guitar, it seems to me. The smaller fretboard on a mandolin may seem a problem, but I adapt pretty easily between the two. The variety between guitar and mandolin makes for a nice change also.
@bigassmatic It does. You should also get to know the violin, just makes things even easier. With a few years of on-and-off guitar, and a bit of violin, I learned "grade 3" songs after a few months of mandolin.
Nope, this is an Applause (an Ovation cheapie), bought used for $160. It's now my traveling, grab-and-go mandolin that I don't worry too much about, and it keeps allowing me to play it in all imperfect conditions. It's a nice, dependable beater mandolin that I really enjoy.
I just bought a mandolin :) I love it but I'm reeeeally bad at it (I have zero instrument experience). I'm working on what you've provided, but it's really proving to be a challenge. I have an old Kentucky KM-180S and it sounds beautiful when I'm not the one playing lol Thanks so much for this video! I'm looking to do all kinds of music with it, from Blues to Celtic to Contemporary... hope it works out, haha :)
I too have a KM-180S (the "S" stands for solid spruce top, which is good) but I don't play it much. But inspired by your first brave mandolin performance I think I'll pull it out for a YouTube song. This blues thing is simple, but maybe you can't see the fingerings too clearly. Remember, you're only playing two strings, and essentially only fretting one string. I do have some varied song suggestions for you also, ranging from blues to Celtic to maybe Contemporary. Keep playing.
great stuff , got first 8 bars sorted struggling with the last 4 i play blues harpso i know thw 1 .1v .v chord proggresion, carnt see what you r doing any chance of tabbing it out please
Bruce: since I rarely play above the 7th fret, no I don't have intonation problems. This black mando is actually an Applause mandolin, but I also have the more expensive Ovation mandolin, plus a Kentucky S180 all-wood mandolin. Amidst these various mandos, I'd have to say this Johnny Cash blackie plays the easiest and best, but I'd like to upgrade to one really good mandolin someday.
Don't beat around the bush DR . . . tell me what you really think. I love your comment. It's the only one I've ever laughed out loud at (or with). Sir, if I dropped this mandolin again it would aim with the heavy rivet side down and simply bounce off the Nine-Inch-Nail rivets back into my waiting hands. Sometimes durability is a quality, and when you're as careless as I can be, a mandolin that simply allows itself to be played [badly] & punished is better than one that won't play due to abuse.
my electro-acoustic (dud) "crafter" doesn't sound any where near is nice as yours and getting ball-end strings for them here in italy is a nightmare ...
How many mando's do you have? I know of that ball-end string problem, so have stocked up. These strings on this mando are very old, not carefully tuned, and played into an on-board mike/camera on a Mac laptop...all less-than-ideal conditions, but seems to have come out okay. I do think the abuse...I mean 'life experiences' of this mando have led to a more generous, lived-in sound . . . kind of like us, don't you think? Maybe it's the industrial-sized rivets giving a nice resonance.
"nine inch nails" give it a down-home credibility, yes ...
i've got an old bowlback; a mid-missouri flatback - two actually: one at my mother's house in vermont, sight unseen - the dud crafter i mentioned and an oval-hole, F-style.
only thing that would tempt me to buy another - yet another! - would be what they call a mandolinetto over here in 'yurp - a smallish, guitar-shaped mandolin.
of course, that godin your partner plays is tasty ... and who could refuse a gibson? ...
Im a guitar player and im thinking of learning another string instrument in your opinion would you recommend the mandolin?

The irony is your vid has alot of self depreciating humour, and yet you're the only semi decent mandolin teacher on youtube :P.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks for this. Just picked up my deceased dad's mandolin. Frustration for an hour until I found this. I can play a little blues now. Already!

@guitarmandoguy harder to go from mando to guitar then guitar to mando

@guitarmandoguy especially easy if you play violin, you only really have to learn how to pick separate notes quickly!
