No, you can't. If you shoot the barrel it's taken to be an act of aggression and everyone else in the camp attacks you - as I found out. But if you roll it into the fire like I did, it seems to be classed as an 'accident'.
The only thing that's tricky about it though is getting the bloody barrel into position - they're fiddly little fuckers to move! If only you could pick them up like in Half-Life²....

you can just shoot the barrel. the game wont understand that you did it so people will stay neutlar/friendly even though you blow their frinds to bits with big barels.
That doesn't always hold true. They will still perceive you as a threat as you are shooting. Whether it's at a barrel or not is irrelevant. They've attacked me a few times when I tried that.
