  • God bless you sir, your method is excellent. I wish more farmers would do this. It's terrible the way pigs are suffering now. I'm sure you are doing well with your method. I saw where a free range farmer has 3,000 pigs, and makes 10mil a yr. Factory farming with their inhumane farrowing and gestational crates are for pure greed, and they have the nerve to try to justify their evil actions which have been disastrous for the eco system, and humanity. We now have MRSA and Swine Flu because of them.

  • Great video, Iove the way you raise pigs, and I wish other farmers would catch on. This is the natural, and best way to raise pigs. I don't care if the Factory farmers get Swine Flu, that shows my total disgust for their inhumanity. God Bless you sir for having a heart.

  • Firstly, how much pork do you eat? My family of 7 only uses two hogs per year--plenty of meat for normal people.

    Secondly, millions of people are going to starve anyway. . .Intensive, industrial food has seen its day. It is going to collapse. Don't you read the headlines? MRSE found in factory-farm pig workers. Pig Brains inhaled by slaughterhouse workers make them ill. Fat to meat promoters sicken countless people. Manure lagoons spill over & kill fish.

  • The headlines are liberal propaganda. Ask a starving Haitian or Zimbabwean if they would like some factory raised pork.

    The best thing that can happen for people who are starving, is not corporate ag. It's the chance to develop their own healthy, local food economy. THAT feeds people.

  • The world demand for food is at an all time high so intensive farming has not seen its day, in fact it is going to grow even more.

You must enjoy the confinement, the inhumane farrowing and gestational crates, butchering piglets by cutting their ears, testicles, tails and teeth WITHOUT pain medicine, and the stench in the farm and outside. There are free range farmers with as many as 3,000 pigs who do very well, and it's cheaper, better for the enviornment, and better for pigs. Thanks to people like you we have Swine Flu.

  • @nogerdsurg swine flu does not come from hogs in the natural habitat, this is a natural way of raising them, not on a concrete floor where they can move becasue of the other pigs, and crap and urine and dead hogs everywhere like those big factories, you know nothing of the natural way.

  • The cause of MRSE is the unnecessary antibiotic use in humans. Like other superbugs, MRSA is the result of decades of excessive and unnecessary antibiotic use. For years, antibiotics have been prescribed for colds, flu and other viral infections that don't respond to these drugs, as well as for simple bacterial infections that normally clear on their own.

  • A recent Institute of Food Technologists expert panel report stated that correlating the risk of antibiotic use in animals and antibiotic resistance in humans is not possible.

  • @Podchef I'm very very happy to hear that intensive pig farming is on its way out. I sure hope you're right. I can't stand to think about the unecessary suffering the pigs endure in those places. It makes me cry.

    Podchef's method of pork production has caught on - thousands of years ago, it's just been recently that we went away from it.

    I for one, would much rather have a piece of healthy pork, then a mass-produced, salmonella infested, medicine and chemical tainted piece of pork.

    But, that's just me... I also tend to buy higher quality tools over mass produced junk, and look for MADE IN USA stickers on stuff.

  • You read too much fiction. Efficiently raised pork is not tainted. What do you do when one of your pets steps on a sharp stick and gets infected? Use antibiotics?  Let is suffer? Let it die?

  • I would treat it after an injury, just as I would myself. I wouldn't dose it with antibiotics as a 'preventative measure'.

    The 'tainting' isn't a product of how they are raised, it's a product of how they are processed. How many millions of pounds of beef were recently recalled? It could have been pork just the same as it was beef due to the mass processing.

  • It wasn't millions of pounds. It was a very, very small percentage of the meat raised in the last 100 years, less than 1/1000th of a percent. One thing is for sure, you won't have millions of pounds of your pork recalled.....because at the rate at which you grow meat, you couldn't live long enough to produce even 10,000 pound of food.

  • So are you against all preventative health measures or just that one? Are you against Polio vaccines? Ever had an MMR vaccine? Ever take a flu shot? What about Erysipelas, are you against preventing that too?

  • Those are VACCINES. They are fundamentally different then antibiotics.

    I am all for VACCINATING livestock against common threats in the region.

    I am opposed to giving them low level antibiotics in their feed as a general preventative measure. I mean, you don't take a dose of penicillin every day, just to be sure, do you?

  • @hacknsack2 May I point out that by raising meat people starve, it is more "efficient" to grow food that to rear it in nutritional terms.

  • @hacknsack2 Free range humane farmers produce a lot of pork. I saw where someone made 10 million a yr from a Free Range Farm. Thanks again for MRSA, Swine Flu, pigs inhaling stench,from dead pigs,arthritic pigs with sores and respiratory diseases. When a farm sanctuary rescues a pig from your hell holes they are very sick, and have to be treated by a vet.I stopped eating pork because of people like you, and the suffering you have caused. Why have a fact farm when free range is cheaper+healthier.

  • @hacknsack2 Wow way to be ignorant. This is the natural way pigs live. This may not be a large scale operation or extremely efficient but it is perfectly fine. There will always be factory farms so pork production this way will never take over factory farms. Please learn the facts before you give people shit.

  • What type of fencing do you and what is your rotation plan? We have been raising Durocs and we want to adopt your methods. Would love to learn more.

  • I use an electric sheep net fence from Premier1. They work well. At the time I made this film I was using two nets together. Now, I find one is enough and I don't have to move them any more often. If anything I have to move them a bit less. Then I just set up the second net and usher the porkers into it. I move them around ever 2-3 weeks. It takes almost 2 acres to grow pigs for a season my way. The land has to be fallowed from pigs for 2, better 3, years. Watch my other pig videos for more info

  • What breed of pig are you raising? Is the meat quality different depending on the breed? My husband and I are considering pigs now that we have chickens and cows pretty well figured out.

  • so the key to getting the grass to grow again where the pigs have rooted, is to spread hay over the area. This reseeds the uprooted area and grass returns.

  • To be right, the ground needs to be harrowed flat again, but the hay is a cheap way of reseeding the ground and is good for the pigs. The hay I use is from natural, local wild grass meadows and is very diverse. I also use it to rebuild worn out pasture areas.

  • Tell me more about the water system you have for the pigs. Are they sucking the water out of a nipple?

  • Ya. Pig nipples are quite common. The piglets know instinctively what to do. The first time I was prepared to have to "teach" them how to drink out of them by putting molasses, etc on the nipple. It blew me away that they just got it.

    This system works great because there is little waste and the pigs can't foul the water.

  • It all depends on what you need to earn. Two sows and a boar will keep you in piglets to sell as weaners or raise as butcher hogs. Raised like I do they can make you around $4.00 or more per pound, hanging weight. Weaners are selling around $75-120 each. I presell all my meat so I am sure of the need and market. I raise the pigs as a holon to my garden & dairy enterprise, so they cost less to keep. The profit goes to pay taxes. Manure & my meat are free.
