@ifate59 Those items as most items are items that constantly make your character more powerful. once you buy them they add to your stats such as attack damage or ability power(for mages) or to your mana/mana regen defenses or other such. once you have purchased an item it gives you its buff constantly however some items have what are called active effects. an active effect is a secondary effect you activate the item first to use and can be accessed by clicking the item and then your target.

@ifate59 also something not everyone knows about active effects is from upper left to lower right your items are assigned to 1-6 so the top left is 1 bottom right is 6. you can also press escape and go to options and key bindings and bind one of those slots to something other than 1-6 like mouse button four or if you have it. also in this menu you can macro laugh dance or other emotes to buttons so you dont have to type /l or /d to perform the action.

@StuGaZzZ1 when LoL first came out exhaust slowed and blinded the enemy so autoattacks just missed but now it reduces damage they deal to include spells and such. its worse against melee but much better against caster champs.
