The original version of the song is English, not Irish. Amusingly, the relatively new 'Irished-up' version ofthe song is now better known- probably because it appeals to Americans. The original version has the name 'Polly' instead of the numerous Irish ones that different versions off, and verse four laments the leaving of 'merry England'.
I think the song refers to the "Seven Years War" in the 18th century, which was fought in Westphaly and Hannover, not Bavaria. Many British soldiers were Irish (remember the movie "Barry Lindon").
Yes I did sanf sang it perfectly, oh I bet your grandmother was as pretty as you and Chris.
I debated whether to use backing but decided not to, and songs seem to come out better when I don't. with backing your trying to sing over the original and going out of tune LOL
thank you james, but there not all mine . my pets are in the video called my pets 2.. yes eden is a very sweet person. shes the sister i never had. i adore eden
James, I love how you put the info in the box. It really gives us an introspective look at who and why the song was written. Thanks for the special Sunday evening songs. Off to watch your other one. Have a good Monday. Susan
Thanks Susan, was going to have the great late Luke Kelly as backing but prefer singing alone, I got those facts off the lyrics website and basically theirs 2 versions of this, the other is where the future wife goes to live in Germany with future husband and no one is sure whether this is set in World War 1 or 2.
Thanks Stephen for some reason Moviemaker would not pick up my webcam so used the Digigr8 cam next to it instead, did mean a bit of lipsync probs but the audio was fine. Luke Kelly of the dubliners does a great version and was going to use it as backing but I prefer to sing with no music, I'm in control .

nice song and nice sung, I really heart the luke kelly version of it :-)
but is it really world war 1 ?
because I read it's about some war in 1600 something.
As a german I think it's quite peculiar that bavaria is called "high germany" - because bavarians don't speak "high german" at all ;-)
("High german" might be the german version of oxbridge english )

Not sure either but lets say its a cracking song and do have Lukes version right here.
Its about some war Bavarian which I think you could be right.
I shall look it up again, main thing I sung the song.
