Ok, first off, all of you who 1) Don't own snakes, 2) Don't liek snakes, or 3) Don't know what it entails to KEEP a snake, shut the fuck up. Live feeders are not, in any case, ever, necessary to keep a pet snake - it's laziness on the part of the owner. @WingmanRising not really at all, as long as you know where to get cheap food. Once their cage is setup properly, all they need is about 3 meals a month. So whatever 3 mice or 3 rats costs you a month. Their cage doesn't get all that dirty, I only clean out my snake cages about once a month or so(but I do spot cleanings more often than that).

@XpanicATDX25 Actually it is not at all necessary. Prepared frozen feeders which are killed quickly, rather than being terrified for a while and suffocating, are meant for snake consumption. Live feeders are not, in any case, ever, necessary to keep a pet snake - it's laziness on the part of the owner. And 'feeder' rats are DOMESTIC - they lack the same instinct as a wild rat to run away from cats and snakes. Also go google "rats" and "empathy" together - a recent study may be of interest.

@XpanicATDX25 Name ONE domestic animal the eats the same as it's wild cousins. Dogs don't eat rabbits, they eat kibble. Cats eat kibble. Birds eat seed mixes. Rodents eat seed mixes. They point is, they are NOT in the wild. Why should another DOMESTIC animal be fed to another DOMESTIC animal? It's ignorant to pretend you're doing the snake a favour - it doesn't care, and it's quality of life is shot by being confined to a tank anyway.

@MrZamorak23 Actually I don't eat cows. Plants have no central nervous system and do not feel pain, nor do they have a conscious. Feeding a snake this way is completely unnecessary. PetSmart would NEVER sell a live rat as a feeder - that's my problem, this person took advantage of that store. Also live feeders are never and have never been necessary to keep snakes alive. And saying that is like saying "what's the difference between child labour and a good home?" - fear & despair VS love?

@MrZamorak23 So here is my key points: 1) Rats have highly developed brains and to voluntarily feed them to snakes causes them a lot of trauma, which we would panic about if it was happening to a toddler. 2) Snakes do NOT require live feeders, and rats can kill snakes = unethical for both species. 3) This rat specifically was meant to be sold as a PET. Yes, that does matter, to a lot of people that go to PetSmart or PetCo and would be appalled to know that they let this happen.

I do feel that no live animals should be used as feeders, since with how far ahead we are in modern times, it's so unnecessary and unethical. @WingmanRising not really at all, as long as you know where to get cheap food. Once their cage is setup properly, all they need is about 3 meals a month. So whatever 3 mice or 3 rats costs you a month. Their cage doesn't get all that dirty, I only clean out my snake cages about once a month or so(but I do spot cleanings more often than that).

Frozen rats were killed with minimal fear and trauma. This is terrifying. Rats make the list of top 10 smartest mammals - so if two year old were in that tank, would it be funny? Rats have the same amount of intellect and compassion as a toddler so it's really no different, they just can't scream for help like kids do. i think live is always better unless the snake prefers frozen. it brings out their natural instinct to constrict. however, i dont think the tanks are big enough, especially the females. you should also consider getting rocks and whatnot for them to get between
