WHAT THE HELL IS WITH THE OPENING THEME? WHERE IS THE CLASSIC GHOSTBUSTERS THEME? Overall, this was a very underwhelming episode. It could have been a lot better. the plot just moved way too fast. None of the new characters got any development and the reveal at the end came out of nowhere. Overall, I think this would have worked better as a made-for-TV movie, rather than an episode.
@Sh4d0Kat - yep that's about it. I was researching rights for some Robert E. Howard stuff at the same time I learned about the Lovecraft stuff. I asked Arkham House about the Lovecraft rights and got a very nice letter stating that generally everything was wide open. The Howard stuff (non-Arkham House) was in litigation at that time and a very nice anthologist by the name of Glenn Lord was burned pretty badly by (I believe) someone related to the Howard Estate.
@Sh4d0Kat // Hi Sh4d0wKat - sorry I made such a flip comment but Arkham House owns the copyrights to their publications of Joshi's editions of Lovecraft's stories but as far as I know not the stories themselves which are in the public domain.
From what I've looked up the copyright status of Lovecraft's works is contested, to say the least, but Arkham House claims to have the rights to his stories, at least the ones published after 1923. At the very least, the title "The Call of Chthulu" is copyright of Chaosium, who Arkham House sold the rights to so they could make a Lovecraft board game, and Tactical Studies Rules, Inc was almost sued for trying to add the Chthulu Mythos to Dungeons and Dragons. A pity it's not PD.
@reberclark All of Lovecraft's works published before 1923 are public domain in the US, and all his works are public domain in Europe. You're right in that there's little-to-no evidence is present as to whether August Derleth and Donald Wandrei, the founders of Arkham House, or anyone else for that matter, got and/or renewed the copyrights to Lovecraft's later works, and from what I've heard Mr. Lovecraft himself was quite generous with allowing others to use his creations in their own fictions.
@reberclark I guess you probably already know all the stuff I've sent, though. I thought I'd add it for the benefit of those who see our conversation and have no idea why the topic of Lovecraft and copyright is so heated. Oh well. Good morning/day/evening to you, reberclark.

But is the Cathulhu a real demon in mythology?
NaiTaiDai 3 months ago
@NaiTaiDai HP Lovecraft's initial short story, The Call of Cthulhu, was published in Weird Tales in 1928. So no it's not real

Wasn't Cathulhu a made-up character created by H.P. Lovecraft?

@NaiTaiDai And a few other writers. They created the Cthulu mythos. As mentioned in the episode.

Oh - as an aside - one cannot copyright a title of any work. It can be trademarked and registered as such, but not copyrighted. Cheers.

@TheRobbadog Evil Dead took it from Lovecraft's work.
Sh4d0wKat 4 months ago
@TheRobbadog Lovecraft came up with that. Evil Dead is bad ass, but their use of the book was a nod to him.

When did they change the name from Cthulhu to Cathulu?
Rgoid 5 months ago
@Rgoid It's due to legal reasons: The Arkham House publishing company owns the rights to all Lovecraft's works published after 1923.
