@LucasRonsi think again, "Salut" is a word used only with people you are familiar with. The formal way of saying hello is "Bonjour", which literally translates to "Good-Day"
@aishwaryan93 Well, that's actually a normal greeting. You can't directly translate any language from english and then try to speak it. Doesn't make sense that way. You can say 'Salut' but that's informal and you do not greet a person who is older than you or a person you don't know. So you'd say Bonjour :)
@rishkaal420 Thankyou for the information.. Im just learning french i and was told bonjour was only goodmorning and salut was hello and hi and stuff so yeah thanks :D
I'm learning French at the moment and I find pronunciation the hardest. Also when you translate French to English, it gives a totally different meaning which sucks!! damn, I hope I cant get all of this in to my head
@liamthefrenchy hi, thanks a lot for the reply.. i have joined the classes conducted by the French embassy in our country. they have a library with a lot of resources. i will try them out. i think children's books will work. the course is only 3 months, just enough for me to grasp the basic knowledge of French. what i hate about French is that a rule in grammar is not exactly a rule because there are so many exceptions. and you have to keep all that in mind. also the gender basis for nouns!!!
Yes, french grammar and spelling are difficult ... But when you learn the grammar you notice some helpful rules that are redundant and it makes easier the learning ;)
But to know that rules it requires a certain level !
This is formal French kinda things you know the basics that is basic but it is informal. I was confused too I'm in French two at my school and I was like where is it at cause that is what we learned to say.
It's true, no one really says "Où est la salle de bains ?" "Les toilettes" is much more appropriate. And remember to keep it plural because if you say "la toilette", it refers to grooming apparently. As far as the expression "Parlez-vous anglais ?" goes, don't even bother learning that one LOL! Just kidding, they're ok. The language does sound awfully nasally to English speakers. I met a French guy who had the stereotypical laugh, and I almost cracked up.
I COULD NOT AND WILL NOT EVER UNDERSTAND CHINESE, JAPANESE, OR RUSSIAN OMG THEIR SOME OF THE HARDEST LANGUAGES TO SPEAK, and so is English, even though I'm American... I still can't get it right
Vous étudiez " Le Travel Linguist" et vous comprendez!
Oh, and I found a cultural mistake. If you are asking for the BATHroom, you ask "Où le salle de bains?", but if you're asking for the toilet, you ask "Où est les toilettes?"
There is this difference because the French find it unsanitary to wash your hands where you, uh, take care of business.
Anyways, this video is great for teaching basics!!
@theyanna89 On dit "vous comprenez". Ce n'est pas "le salle de bains" c'est "la salle de bains". On dit "Où SONT les toilettes?". En français il y a le PLURIEL, d'accord?
@Carlyiswoah No, vous is the formal way to address a person you do not know and it is considered rude to use "tu" with a stranger, or even your teach/boss.
@Carlyiswoah 'vous' is also used as the "polite form". So if you're speaking to someone you don't know you should say 'et vous?' and if you're speaking to someone you know very well you should say 'et toi?'
@Carlyiswoah #1 I AM trying to learn a 2nd language, or else I wouldn't have watched this video. #2 I wasn't trying to insult any other country, so there's no need to insult my country. #3 That's a really ugly sketch of a puppy you got there.
parmi tous les langues l'arabe est la langue la plus difficile ,mais pour apprendre le français il suffit de bien écouté regarder des films en français et essayer de parler , la suit vient après
I've studied french for three years now, and was going to study more but it became VERY hard now. I still can just say "I speak a little bit frenc, but nut much" and say weird stuff, like "my dad is a green little dog" x'D
jitry2 "comment ca va?" is informal. You would say it with your friends. "Comment allez-vous?" is formal. I like this vid, but they should have made the distinction between the two. Now let's have a travel linguist video for American English :P
@jityr2 Well, i think both meen the same. In spanish there are 2 phrases like the 2 from french (¿Cómo te va? and ¿Cómo está usted?), but both are translated to english as "How are you?".
@theprophet113 Out of all those the easiest wud be Russian and the hardest GERMAN -__- It was soo hard for me to pronounce those words that i had to hold my tounge back >.< french is in the middle :D
@doidao147 Hope you are kidding =/. I'm a french speaker and I would say that what makes French a difficult language to learn is... the grammar. So yes, French is pretty hard (even for the frenchies hahaha) but it's not because there is no grammar !
@Frankyboy1177 What do they mean theres no grammer. i am trying to learn on my own and its medium-hard but the only hard part is getting those words that merge. A.K.A=Me- Kel-es un petit chat vous ont. Really=Qu'est-ce qu'un petit chat que vous avez
@doidao147 hahahahahaha what are you talking about? both french and portuguese are romance languages meaning they have the same grammar systems, dumbass.
@goblue122394 yes French and Portugese are romance languages like Italian and Spanish. but have you already heard Portuguese or Spanish ? you have a huge difference with French. it's absolutely not the same pronunciation, but our grammar system is pretty the same.
btw 34% of the English words come from French. so you have also many similarities with English.
thats it! im officially pissed! this is an insult to the frenchs...this guys are PHUKIN dummies, MAN! who ever had the idea of having them in front of a cam? ....as a french, i feel fucking disgraced! this vid S U C K s big time....really ...
So wait you used the informal form of "how are you" and then the informal version of "I'm fine, and yourself?" ? I'm a student taking French 2, I'd hardly call myself qualified to make corrections but I saw several important issues.
@thegreatcaitymarie I thought they might be poor quality videos after seeing that they were moderating comments on another video (blocking negative comments as they did with mine). Do you know any good videos for learning French for free?
@guigs219 french had latin roots and greek roots too...I'm a french teacher too be and we learn all our latin and greek roots in the process...you have the ear you noticed :)
@guigs219 i think it was influenced by celtic or it is probably that all the other romance languages are more latinized if you know what im saying....it could be either or both
Je ne parle pas bien français. Je parle anglais est je suis etidie parler français. I don't speak good French. I speak English and I am learning to speak French.
You probably wouldn't say "Où est la salle de bain ?" This means you're looking for a full bathroom, with a shower or bathtub for bathing. If you're just looking for the toilets at a restaurant or a museum, you should say "Où sont les toilettes ?"
au revoir is more like 'see u later' than goodbye tho ... if u wanna say 'bye see u later' u just say 'bye' cuz u can say that in french also ... as for me i use 'au revoir' to be polite or with strangers... i use the word 'bye' (prounonced as in english) to say see u later to my friends.
Litteraly, bonjour means ''good (bon) day (jour)'' So you can say it not only the morning, but at anytime of the day. If you really want to say good morning, you'll say ''Bon matin''
And for hello, you can say ''Salut'' or ''Bonjour'' which is a bit more polite. But you can also say ''Allo'' which means the exact same thing as ''salut''.
Good morning = bon matin ? Bon matin n'existe pas en France. On peut le remplacer par "je vous souhaite une bonne matinée" (I wish you a good morning). On dit Bonjour (good morning) le matin, jusqu'au soir.
Le soir on dit simplement bonsoir (good evening
Lorsqu'on se quitte le soir, on se dit bonne nuit (good night)
On peut le remplacer par "je vous souhaite une bonne matinée" (I wish you a good morning) "je vous souhaite une bonne après-midi/ une bonne fin de journée/c'est correct.
@animegirl86 Because most of the french people won't link it. I am french, and I've rarely seen people linking the ''s'' with the following word. You can still say it if you want to speak ''perfectly'' but people rarely do it in normal discussions. I think it sounds a bit strange.
That vid is cool. One piece of advice though: don't ever ask "où est la salle de bain ?" if you actually mean "where are the toilets?". "Salle de bain" is never used in that case, just ask "où sont les toilettes ?" and everything will be fine. ^^
im american and we have our ups and more downs how ever i would love to learn frnch even thoe it makes more sense to learn spanish with all the illegal immagrents and i dont like canada either
Je pense qu'il y a une erreur:"bathroom" peut désigner les toilettes dans un bar ou un restaurant. Y demander la salle de bain peut déclencher un fou rire. In a public area (café, restaurant) "bathroom" is translated in french by "toilettes" or "WC".
@57270chris mais j'crois pas non plus que tu sais parler d'autres langues... Je ne dis pas ça pour te juger, mais c'est juste que la plupart des français parlent seulement leur langue. Ce qui est dommage d'ailleurs :(
@57270chris Excusez-moi. I do not think so. There are a bunch of languages more beautiful. But I can understand that you are a french marketing your own language . . . totally natural. By the way, I want to learn french and other languages. C'est la vie, mon ami.

Normally you say "salut" if you know the person and "bonjour" everytime everywhere
" well and you" = 2 translation : "bien et toi" if you know the person or "bien et vous" if you don't know the person
and if you answer "well and you" at 2 people minimum you must say "bien et vous"
the "vous" for 1 person it was a respect cause you don't know this person

French can't be translated word to word in english. The grammar is latin, not in english. And don't discourage yourself !
You can always increase your skills easily. Why don't you try to take some books in a library to the children ?
The knowledges are easier to learn and "more basic".

If good morning = bonjour
hello = ...salut or bonjour ?
TheClaireBlue 1 year ago
@TheClaireBlue it means both but salut can also mean hi.
MsDevil100 1 year ago
@TheClaireBlue hello is the same as salut/bonjour but salut is the formal one.

@TheClaireBlue
So,
Good morning = Bon matin
Hello (polite) = Bonjour
Hello, Hi = Salut, Allo

@Josh3582 Allo et bon matin ça se dit au Canada?? Parce-qu'en France on ne les utilise pas du tout... :)
jujukoko 1 year ago
@jujukoko Je ne savais pas qu'en France on ne les utilisait pas, mais ici tout le monde dit ça. :p

@Josh3582
On peut le remplacer par "je vous souhaite une bonne matinée" (I wish you a good morning) "je vous souhaite une bonne après-midi/ une bonne fin de journée/c'est correct.

why wasn't the "s" in "parlez-vous anglais" linked to have a "z" sound?
animegirl86 1 year ago
@animegirl86 Because most of the french people won't link it. I am french, and I've rarely seen people linking the ''s'' with the following word. You can still say it if you want to speak ''perfectly'' but people rarely do it in normal discussions. I think it sounds a bit strange.

How can I say "I don't speak french but I like it, and I want to learn".
Is "Je ne parle pas français mais me plaît, et je veux apprendre" ok?
TheUnamenable 1 year ago
@TheUnamenable No (but fast ! :) ), it's : "Je ne parle pas français mais j'aime ça, et j'aimerais veux) apprendre ".

That vid is cool. One piece of advice though: don't ever ask "où est la salle de bain ?" if you actually mean "where are the toilets?". "Salle de bain" is never used in that case, just ask "où sont les toilettes ?" and everything will be fine. ^^
