Ninja Scroll. Pretty much the kind of anime I still wish was prevalent; manly stuff, unapologetic violence, exploitative with women. My kind of show. The description pretty much nails it solid. It had some pretty awesome villains too, you'll see.

@triforceofcourage111 During the Tokugawa Shogunate, probably early 1600's because the old dude talks about the civil wars prior to 1600 like they weren't that long ago.  But Japan was closed to foreigners until the 1850's so possibly anytime during that period.
