Alligator Gar are not an invasive species , and they have been eating bass since bass have been around. Face it Bowfishing may be a sport, but it's almost 100% white trash that practice it. Gar are great sport fish, and white trash bowfishermen just don't get it. It would be hard for gar to become over populated even if no person killed one because the offspring have a very small chance of making it to adult size. They are an apex predator and keep the food chain in order. If there were too many bass and crappie they could diminish the smaller fish populations and then the numbers of all fish would drop. I don't see any problem with bowfishing as long as people don't kill every gar.
Yes I knew that.I cant remember the percentage of a gar becoming and adult but its not a very high percentage I know that much.I dont think its possible to kill every single gar in a body of water.Gator gar might be uncommon but Spotted Gar,Long nosed gar and things like that are'nt.And in some states people are only allowed to harvest 1 gator gar a year for this very reason.
The amount of time gar get over populated has more to do with the size of the body of water they are in more than anything else.I have seen a 6 foot deep pool in a creek that was probably 25 feet wide.I counted over 90 gar in just that one little pool.There were'nt any bass,crappie or drum in that pool just gar.I'm not a biologist or anything but I'd have to say they are a little over populated in that area.
They do well in the shallow rivers and creeks. There are areas where they have become a nuisance, but it is all about maintaing a healthy proportion of fish. A few probably need to be killed by people, but they should use the fish for something productive and not just go about slaughtering the fish for the sake of getting rid of them like people have tried to do in the past. The food chain exists for a reason.

What do you do, kill it and leave it to rot? These are not garbage fish and killing them doesn't improve the environment. If you're not going to use it then leave it for the catch and release crowd or give it to someone who will.
If I lived near where their were plenty of fish of the proper size in clean waters I'd bowfish and the parts I didn't eat would be used in the vegetable garden. Fish is one of the best fertilizers.

I dont know I've never killed one that big before.I'd probably eat it if I did though.I've heard gar is pretty damn good.
Most of the gar I kill are like 3 feet long at the most.I dont think they rot though.The raccoons,coyotes and bobcats eat them.
