  • are these lengths one off? or are they done continuously?

  • @kitt998 The filming was done during multiple 50's... but the goal of the athlete is to complete the entire 50 without breathing.

  • Isn't holding one's breath bad for the brain?

  • @cowswirl in order to cause damage to the brain, you would have to hold your breath until you passed out.

  • man I cant swim over 20 meters without breathing

  • AH my team did no breather drills today.. I hate them. I guess having asthma doesn't help though, oh well, swimming is fun ^_^

  • "Hi guys, I'm 6 years old and my 100 free is a 40.34!", gotta love these posts. lol

  • @lexmark80 lmfao!

  • AHAHAh :P wow bud

  • lol you crazy

  • you should be able to do 50m underwater, probably even more, then on the surface. even i can do like 37m (and 25 yards "freestyle" _with_ breathing:) )

  • no you cant

  • you little bitch lier

  • you can see that the video is edited where he took a breath

  • Kinda hard to show an entire 50 unedited. Don't worry, we can make it the entire way, but yes, it was edited to show the different stages of a 50.

  • my 'so?' comment is directed, not at the previous post, but at the concept of this video. I must be missing something.

  • These videos usually are connected to an article on our website, so what you're probably missing is what was written on the site.

  • @hazey55 reading the description also fills in some gaps very nicely.

  • so?

  • The less you breath. The faster you go

  • in a 50. after that lactate builds up like crazy, so even in a 100 meter event, especially as a swimmer builds muscle mass (which requires more oxygen) it is beneficial to breathe every two (every cycle). just watch a 100 meter freestyle final at a world level for proof of this.

  • My favorite sets =]. Short and lots of rest. Best for sprinters =D.

  • my coach told me to do 3 lengths no breathers xD o dear god that was painful -_- AND ONLY CAUSE I GOT 3RD AND 2ND PLACE!

  • no breathing makes you go faster

  • thats good to know

  • when you lap swim will the coaches let you breathe or no??

  • They have to let you breathe, you won't make it otherwise.

  • well my coach has a little penis so he makes us do about 600 yards of no-breathers at the end of each practice by 25 or 50

  • no sound made me think im not breathing either lol..... just 5m under water lol... i no good ...but wont that lower your performance under water and makes tired quicker?????

  • yeah well i do 50m freestyle in 5 seconds. im tired of all the ppl who come in and show off on their fake results

  • i can almost do a 50 but i am almost their!

  • diganle a ese chavo, que hay respiracion 3/1 5/1 7/1 porque asi solo va a nadar en balnearios ;))

  • You have a great pull, aiding your movement through the water and allowing you to cover a distance with little effort. Fantastic achievement.

  • I could probably do 25m no breathers but 50s? I hope some day...LOL

  • yea not hard.. ok

  • ive a 1.10 for 100metres. pretty shit cos im 16 but i only started seriously trainin a year age. i used to hate it:P. still feelin quite ashamed!

  • meant to say a year ago

  • 14 yr old male

    50 free 23.2

    100 free 52.9

    good?

  • yeah, right.

  • im talkin yards here

    honest

  • oh lol im from the UK I only do things in meters. Im sure thats probably true then if its yards, i wouldnt know really.

  • its yards rtrd.

  • Was I talking to you? no

  • lol i went from really flattered to not flattered at all

  • those times are really good for a 14 yr old (freshman).

but honestly if you're that fast you wouldn't be on youtube bragging about it. everybody I know that is that fast is a nice person who doesn't brag about their speed (and I know people faster than your times, which is not that surprising if you're in a yr round swim team lol)

  • Also, what are some of youre times people? EVERYONE WHO GETS ONTO THIS PLEASE SAY UR TIMES LIKE I DID. Thanks.

  • Can you tell me if I am good for a 14 yr old male in the following:

    50 yds. freestyle : 27.00 secs.

    100 yds. freestyle : 1 min. 01.97 secs.

    100 yds. back : 1 min. 14.6 secs.

    100 yds. butterfly : 1 min. 15.01 secs.

  • those are pretty good time, just drop 50 free some more

  • no, sorry, ur ok. not like JO or AA material but you arent bad. i go a 23.3 in my 50 free yds and a 53.9 in my 100 free yds. (i die the third length) but ya, im 14 as well, ur not bad, just not too great.

  • freak ;) nah, joke...respect...but do u have a "dry-life" besides swimming? xD i mean...im 15 and i just reached 59,58 secs on 100 free and 26,72 secs on 50 free... ur times are a little bit...wow! :D

  • ya, i hhave a life, but its skool. i go to an asian skool, (im not asian myself, im russian) but its very tough there and thats basically my boring life, youtube, skool and swim.

  • freestyles my second worst stroke... i think

  • 23.3? olympic qualifying is 23.49

  • olympics go by meters, not yards.

  • oh yeah..i didn't quite read all of that.

    i appreciate the correction

  • I have done a 75 meter no-breather. It is all mental (even though I almost blacked out). I made a set of 8 50's 6 free 2 underwater breaststroke no breathers on 1:15. I am not a national level swimmer; I go 27.03 in 50Y short course free.

  • I see some comments from active swimmers here saying they cant make a 50 free without breathing are you serious? I can easaly do a couple of these in a row with short breaks and im not good at a national level or anything.

  • Nice!! OUR COACHES DO THAT NOW. nO BREATHERS FOR A 25 (Sometimes a 50, but rarely) and if you don't make it they'll make you start the set again.

    Great Job :]

  • 3/ breath is good. thats what i do

  • my best ever that I only ever did once at a race was 2 breathes, I still can't do it again it's just so hard, but 3 is my average too but not at practice.

  • it's called a hypoxic pyramid its awesome for building lung capacity......it will help in running too.

  • by not breathing you don't have to breath to the side breaking aerodynamics therefore slowing you down so if you don't breath you don't lose your streamline and aerodynamics so you go faster

  • 'aerodynamics'?! you're in water, not flying!! haha, but i know what you mean. Thing is, breathing shouldn't break your balance or profile in the water anyways. i agree with 'goswim98' about trying to increase muscle efficiency.... far more important

  • what is the physiological effects of not breathing why swimming. how does this help a swimmer become better? lung capacity?

  • There are many goals to limiting breath while swimming. One would be to increase lung capacity by focusing on taking in MORE air prior to leaving the wall and then hanging onto it for an extended period. Another is to eventually get your body to use oxygen more efficiently. By limiting the amount of oxygen your muscles have access to, they'll eventually learn to work better with what they have... like training at altitude.

  • @goswim098 training at altitude.. like batman!?! :o

  • Just curious...did you normally do these at the beginning of a workout or at the end? Did you do some extended deep breathing prior to the swim?

  • I hate it when our coach gives us no breathers, these ARE the definition of TRUE punishment lol

  • he probably edited the film//lol

  • Of course it's edited... to illustrate the turn, and the increased tempo. What that means is that we did multiple 50's without a breath. Which is a typical set. I wanted to show that a good way to accomplish these is to start slowly, make sure you don't blow out your air during the turn, and will more than likely increase the turnover toward the end (instinct). It's not that tough, once you get the hang of it. It's just a way to control your effort level.

  • huh?

  • damn i can almost do that to =D

  • unbelievable.bravo!swimming is the best sport.

  • ive been swimming for like 3 years and i still have a hard time holding my breath...wow

  • Actually, he's 2 seconds off qualifying for US Olympic Trials, but in breaststroke.

  • my 50 breaststroke time in SCY is 31:12 does that qualify? i'm 12 by the way. what about a 1:05:56

  • That's some great swimming for 12... keep it up. The OT cuts are in LCM, and are somewhere around 1:04.7 and 2:20.9. Shouldn't be too long for you. Keep working.

  • hes hott

  • Overwater pull is better?

  • underwater pull is really inefficient.

  • this guy is really good at swimming. I wanna be like a pro swimming. But that takes years it hink and a lot of practice

  • wow! you broke a record! that's pretty cool. i wish i was that fast. i'm not exactly slow or anything, but i'm not the best, that's for sure.

  • tis video has been cut it it not stick 2gader wan...

  • yeah, you don't have to not breathe to go faster. doing a 50 free without breathing (at practice) is fun when you can do it and no one else on your team has the lung capacity or the guts to do it. i've done it before.

  • not breathing keeps u more streamlined....so less drag, therefore u dont need as much energy to move. however it doesnt shave like 5 seconds..it takes off less than a second...i know cuz i broke a record doing it

  • i bet u have..

  • Whoot! i did a 50 no breathing free in practice yesterday! 'cept i almost passed out lol!

  • Damn... I got a swimming copetition this friday. So should I breathe or should I not. I did 1 breath in 3-5 strokes for freestyle and frogstyle before, I guess I need more practice now... :(

  • this stroke doesnt look right

  • fuck you shreddin swimmer I've made JO times in freestyle and learn how to spell

  • You are probably the most ignorant person out there.

Quite pretending to be a swimmer.

#1: You had no Kick-out to the surface

#2: Every olympian breathes...jesus, phelps breathes every other stroke. Its called the Alex Popov technique.

    learn i.

maybe you won't suck so bad....cause you push too

far forward....no downward angle at all!

  • woah calm down yall take swimmin to serioulsy ive been swimmin since i could walk but u dont see me settin of on ppl like that... how do u no that she is pretending u dnt no so who cares about how u breathe just as long as u win/get a better time than b4

  • Michael Phelps was breathing every other stoke in the 100 free during the Duel In the Pool

  • he does that cuz he can.......his 200 fly time is like 1:52...and he breathes every stroke...hes in that good of shape and hes that talented...unless u can swim faster than him...dont say anything..u stupid idiot

  • Oh come on. Spartans can do 375 meters without breathing.

Oh, don't even get me started on Chuck Norris.

  • breathing doesnt slow you down if you do it correctly, it just increases you speed because yiour body is getting oxygen

  • For those not breathing - why? The only reason I can think of is maybe to simulate a race situation. The hypoxia effect was proven to be non-existent. And the real question is when you breath less are you improving your technique or just hiding a mistake such as breathing too high?

  • I breathe once in a 50,I find that i go much faster when I don't breathe at all there is this feeling that i get when i don't breathe in a 50,and its accompanied by an insurmounstable amount of energy lol.

  • i breathe once in my 50...works for me. and brststroka, that 18.74 is obsolete after this weekend=)

  • gavleborg you're a moron. they dont give prizes to the swimmer with the most "graceful form". They give the to the fastest swimmer.

  • Why not practice bi-lateral breathing to obtain a sustainable and graceful form? I can't understand why someone like Grant Hackett hasn't had the time to learn this. Well, it's never to late.

  • "hut ab"... but that's really just for really young ones or people with a max lung capacity. For the rest, with damaged lungs (genetically or otherwise) it's an impossible thing to do...

  • 18.74 = no breath. enough said.

  • if you can do it without any breath it will be better , because when you take a breath your speed minimizes 30 % lower than the speed you were up to and then you start again to go up with your speed , but while you are taking no breathes you only faster your speed , and thats if you can do it , but thats not mean to die to do it , if your lung is not big enought to do it , so better make it with 2 breathes ,, 1 at the 25 meters and the other befor finish

  • no breaths for 50 is too hardcore. hahaha, but is it true that your body starts to give out when it is not receiving oxygen?

  • look ,, its a ratio ,, but me my self i take only one breath at the last 12.5 meters ,, and you should try a several 50's with a diffrent breath systems and see what is your most efficiant one .

  • no i don't think so , you'd be too exhausted at the end of your 50 , with 2 breathes it's good... you train your lungs.. But there's no need to try to breath only twice in a race

  • is this a good exercise to practice?

i swim the 50 free alot and i usually go for 2 breathes. should i be trying for none?

  • yeah

no olympian ever takes a breath.

    why should you?

  • thats bullshit, some of ian thorpes sprints he breaths every second stroke

  • I usally go for 2 breathes too..
