Yeah I didn't even know their 1970 song from the album "close to you" was originally a Gospel song :) and if karen had lived it was rumored they were going to do probably a Choir album †
@GodsPrincess4Ever "Close to You" was always a pop song, not gospel, written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. However, "Love is Surrender" was originally a contemporary Christian song. I've never heard the "choir album" rumor, so I sort of doubt it, but the Carpenters' first album had a strong choral influence with "Invocation" and "Benediction."
People always insulted The Carpenters that they were "Squeeky clean" and their music was just "beautiful" the words to most of their songs were so sweet and tender. I figure we have enough garbage to listen to and watch why not something beautiful and true? The way God made love to be? And God speaks to us through song as He does with this song. This is a prayer from my heart to the heart of God. always has been. Always will †
organized religion is just a scare tactic used to try to keep people in line. going back on topic, karen's vocals are just gorgeous here, and this song is so pretty.
"I don't need to go to church and listen to some preacher tell me what to believe in. I don't dig that at all." - Karen Carpenter radio interview, 1970
AWESOME images. So totally of the Lord. I sure hope Karen had believed on the Lord Jesus Christ. If she makes it into heaven.. I will shed some happy tears, for sure. AND I will be able to hear her sing again. Sadly, very few ever find the way that leads to life everlasting :...(
@naughtypoppett Arguing with someone like you is a waste of time. You have rejected Jesus Christ. Wilingly. I am not amazed you are British. That place is the world center for wiccans.
@7vitaman OK...let's not argue...maybe your time would be better spent questioning your beliefs for yourself...and thinking a little beyond what you have been told....and mine being a wiccan and filing my nails.

Wonderful upbeat song about someone special by the Carpenters. It could for any loved one who makes a difference in your life....and in this case it happens to be Jesus. Not a Christian song folks.
This is a wonderful and uplifting video. Don't let the naysayers get you down. This is beautiful. The Carpenters did do a gospel song. It was called Love Is Surrender. I remember flipping dials on the radio once back then & catching it on a religious station. That's another good song too.
I've been looking for this song for a long time...I loved and I like the Carpenters soooo much I remember my Mom use to sing all the Carpenters songs since I was 5 or 6 years old in the Philippines and I still remember all the songs and now my kids hears me singing the Carpenters songs in my magic mic karaoke at home...I'm sure when they grow up they will remember some of the songs like how I remember it through my Mom while I was growing up. Great job!!! Awesome and Unique Inspirational video.
o woooooooooooow thanx ever soooooo much for the song and video, that HE loves us soooo much that He Gave us salvation, any one is welcome to ask HIM for HIS gift of salvation, like Karen did and is now in heaven with the LORD JESUS CHRIST ,truly at peace and happiness
oh f**k off you do not know Karen would like it! unless you now have a hotline to heaven aswell as an innate ability to ruin a good song by accompanying it to ridiculous slides....
No one is trying to make Carpenters a Christian group. This song has always been one of my favorites and an overlooked fabulous peformance that should be on their Greatest Hits compilation. I've thought of doing something similar to this for years and think its great! If you don't like the slides combined with the music, don't watch it. This could very well be what you would consider a contemporary Christian song. Thank you worship999 for putting this together. I know Karen would like it. xoxo
isn't that why they banned subliminal advertising..because people didn't realise they were being sold something..but they couldn't avoid it nevertheless?
God (and yes I am taking his name in vain) you are really beligerant aren't you?......any platform to perpetuate the malice that is Christianity you will take, and then look wide eyed when people object to you foisting in upon them unwittinglyl...still, I don't think I need to worry too much...This jesus gig you've all been conning people with for years is seriously on the wane isn't it? regardless of your efforts.
If you'll notice, I never expressed any topical viewpoint, at all. What I said applies to any point of view expressed in videos, including yours. Posting a video on YouTube doesn't force anything on anyone.
I disagree....it's there...therefore it's unwelcome presence is felt by so many others who do not use YouTube to receive Christian Doctrine. Furthermore, It distorts an naive viewers image of The Carpenter's and mis-represents them, which is wrong - you only have to read some of the other comments on this page to see that.
What unwelcome presence are you referring to? As with anything else on this site no one is forcing you to watch it. To draw a parallel here: Since the Carpenters have sung Christian Christmas songs, it's not unreasonable to post Christian slides to one of their songs; if someone such as myself was known to have made pro-Nazi statements or sung pro-Nazi songs, then posting a pro-Nazi song with my photo would not be unreasonable....
@7vitaman I'm invited to reply to your 'comment' by Youtube..but frankly I struggle to muster the energy to discuss with somebody whose opener includes a reference to the devil.....why not bring in Father Christmas and the Bogeyman aswell and we'll call it a party.....

This is a creative idea, melding this song with religious themes. However, Richard probably doesn't like it--he is not religious and neither was Karen. Also, though I mildly liked this video, I burst out laughing when I saw the Jesus-blessing-the-motorcyclist slide. You definitely took a turn toward the trailer park when you put that one in!
How do you know she wasn't religious? Just because someone doesn't regularly attend church doesn't mean they aren't spiritual. How do you know what was in her heart? You shouldn't EVER speculate about someone's relationship with God. That's between them and God, not you and them and God. I've read articles about their thoughts on religion. Have you ever heard their radio interview from early on in their career? They both believed, but didn't care much for organized religion.
How do you know whether or not they were religious? How do you know what was in her heart? You should never speculate about someone's relationship with God. That's between them and God, not you and them and God. They both believed, they just didn't care much for organized religion. Have you never heard the radio interview they did discussing this? Watch her wedding & then try to convince me they weren't religious. If they didn't believe, the wedding would've been much different. They were private
You just answered your own question. They weren't into organized religion--and thus were not "religious." Yes, they were spiritual. And most weddings take place in a religious setting. I can assure you they were spiritual lite at best. The only "Christian" songs they ever recorded were Christmas traditional songs. But thanks for sharing.
Some of the Christmas songs sung by the Carpenters were not the common run of secular songs, but were songs with a Christian message, including some I'm sure a lot of people have never heard of, such as "Christ Is Born" and "Little Jesus".
Sorry to inform you, but you can't make the Carpenters a "Christian group" in retrospect. They only recorded those songs because they were Christmas songs and it was a Christmas album. I'm not saying this rendition of "You" is bad--it's just freaking hilarious because it's not a song about Jesus, it's a plain ol' love song.
Personally, I don't approve of trying to change a love song into a Christian song. There are actually two Carpenters Christmas albums. As far as singing songs with a Christian message goes, you don't know what the Carpenters' intent was, and neither do I....
The age you've posted for yourself has me doubting that you knew them very intimately, but if you knew them, you MIGHT have a better idea of their intent than I would.... Also, you didn't seem to realize they produced two Christmas albums....
Duh. Everyone who produces a Christmas album is not necessarily professing "Christian beliefs." Sometimes it's to make money. Surely you realize this. You seem to be the type of person who wants to believe whatever you want to believe, so go for it.
My point (above) is that you, claiming to have known the Carpenters, apparently didn't realize that they produced more than one Christmas album. I entered this discussion to oppose your presuming to speak for the Carpenters, as to their beliefs and intentions. As I already stated, I'm not doing that, myself....
The Carpenters produced ONE Christmas album. They recorded a lot of extra tracks which were released as a 2nd Christmas album later. Even the regular fan knows this. Duh!
Judging by your previous comments, you probably learned about the circumstances of the production of the second album through internet research, not having previously known it even existed, although the Carpenters' Christmas music is the topic of this discussion. Aside from that, I haven't come to any conclusions about the Carpenters' beliefs and purposes, and I won't be making any pronouncements if I ever do.
