  • Save up the money and get a fender.

  • Don't bother with a squier bass, ever. If you cant afford something high end at least save up for a fender. It will sound and play much, much better for not much more money

  • @doctordogballs I haven't found that to be necessarily true.. from what I've seen the vintage modified and classic vibes basses have been rivaling, if not surpassing, the Mexican fenders in quality, sound and play-ability. But ones instrument is a highly specialized choice and to each his own.

  • Hey are this basses really demanding on amplifiers and stuff? i mean will i have to spend to much for it to sound right? :/

  • Would you say its worth selling a Squier STANDARD Jazz for this model? It sounds better- do you think its worth it? HELP!?

  • Hi, i Know it is titled "Jazz Bass" but could you play other sorts of music on it such as the red hot chilli peppers and it still soudning brilliant? Or would it not sort that sort of music? would i be better of getting a different bass? I love the sound of this but i just wanted to ask those few questions to make my mind up if i am going to buy it or not, someone please reply to me, Thanks.

  • @TheMusicOnMax

It's only called a Jazz bass because at the time it first came out (early 60's) the only big bands were Jazz bands, at this was a bass made to sound more 'forward' in the mix, so that people could hear the bass better. It was used a lot in power trios, one example of a power trio band is Rush. They don't really play Jazz, do they? That, and Flea from RHCP used a Jazz bass the most whenever he played.

  • @McPhersonBassMaster no they dont, haha, thanks for the help, Much appricated :)

  • @TheMusicOnMax

No problem. But yeah, having a bridge pickup helps it to get more midrange/treble, so that they can be a bit more forward in the mix. That, and it's just made a little bit better.

  • @McPhersonBassMaster Ok thankyou! I'll be sure to pick up this bass then! :)

  • @TheMusicOnMax Belive me! If you can tune a Jazz Bass,, u can play anything on it! It's probably the most versitale bass u can get! Bassplayer from funk,, jazz,, heavy metal even deathcore (If you know what that is) use jazz basses. U can't go wrong with it. And yes,, it would sound awesome for stuff like RHCP :)

  • @BassDouche12 sweet, ill definitely be getting one of these then! thanks for the help :)

  • I just started playing bass on one of these and i love it!

  • HAHAHAHA

    "Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass"

    > "The Squier Vintage Modified Jazz is Based".

    lol

  • Иудей с басом -))

  • you look like john entwistle

  • Guys, why do some VM Jazz 70 basses have almost a natural look on them, like no gloss at all, while some almost look glossy orange.

  • I WANT IT!

  • Great sound.

  • You're just good at bass in general.

  • mine gave up on me today :'( :'( :'( :'(

  • @azerty7889 how? what happenned to it?

  • @danielhl22 it's fixed :D

  • Is it worth it to buy this bass? Or should I save up?

  • @XxguitarXx22

hi. i recently bought this bass.. it's an awesome bass.. it suits up to different genre.. one thing i noticed about this bass is that the action is a bit high.. if i were to recommend you a bass to buy, i'll tell you to buy one of this man!!

  • I heard that squier are not in real wood.. it's a legend?

  • @nicodanger13 It's real wood, it's just that some of the woods they use have poor tonal qualities. Look for basswood and alder, avoid agathis. Look up the specs on teh company website to ensure what you're getting is a decent tone wood.

  • @Shinozoku dont tel people to avoid agathis...if you have a bass that is cheap enough to feature agathis, the player is most likely a beginner. They will probably be gentle...if not, screws them...agathis is light, afordable, and not hard on the economy and ecosystem...and IM saying that as a major conservative.

  • @BlackMaidenTallica My statement was under the impression that the person was looking for "real TONE wood". I agree on all your points though, that it's good to have cheaper woods for beginners. Hell, I owned an agathis guitar or two myself. So my statement was aimed more at a person looking for a higher quality instrument, not a beginner. My bad.

  • okay, so im thinking of buying a bass and i dont know if i should get a bronco bass, j bass, or p bass. i play punk rock like Bad Religion, NoFX, Anti-Flag etc. Can someone tell me which one i should get? and do they have the same size necks?

  • @AlmostaFlipinSkater I think a P-Bass would suit your style. It has lots of low end power. You can also get a really punchy treble sound from it. Perfect for punk rock. The P-Bass neck is wider than the slimmer J-Bass neck.

  • @AlmostaFlipinSkater go with a P bass...just lettin you know, you can swap out fender/squier necks if you want to try a slimmer J bass neck on a P bass body.

  • i've got this bass, best bass i've had to date.

  • better than fender..............

  • @DReidGuitars

you do realize that squire is owned by fender? =D

  • @DReidGuitars how is it? and squier is fender anyways....

  • @DReidGuitars I'm sorry but you are an idiot

  • Just listening to that tone made me giggle in excitement. Hopefully I'm getting this bass tomorrow for my birthday!

  • @Foges6694 and, did you get it? how do you like it?

  • @triclops8 Yep I got it! It's really cool it has a really nice growly tone and it's nice and slim.

  • @Foges6694 hey cool, that sounds fine! I´m having an eye on one of them on ebay, and I think I´ll definitely grab it ;)

  • @triclops8 Yeah and it's really good for a bass of that price. All of the employees at the music shop it was bought from love it.

  • @triclops8 buying your first bass? buy an ibanez sr300 instead.

  • @yhtomitalmighty meanwhile I got a great offer for getting a fender geddy lee jazz bass which I got now and I´m very satisfied with it ;)

  • @triclops8 congratulations on the new geddy lee! i sold my fender MIM jazz for a MIJ precision and I miss the jazz pups so i'm buying this one. or you could sell me your recently purchased geddy lee :))

  • 1:04-1:11 is very awkward...

  • @spectorkid31 I hate people do that

  • @spectorkid31 huh?

  • @azerty7889

    does your bass neck-dive?

  • @spectorkid31

    ROFL

  • I picked my up for $150...One of the best purchases I have made...I have a couple of Fender Jazz basses and this one ranks right up there with them

  • 0:45 did he said "Indonesia"?

  • @dayidayi100 yes he said that, why?

  • @dayidayi100 Almost all cheap basses are made in Indonesia.

Ibanez makes his stuff there, squier does it too.

  • @dayidayi100 what else could he have said?

  • @dayidayi100 Soo?

  • I played one of these guitar center and it wasnt bad for a squier

  • this should have been a fender not a squire.

  • I like them pups, anyone know of anything that would sound similar in an alder fender j?

  • moly moly moly mole

  • whats brand of strings ?

  • Everyone, please, for God's sake...IT IS SQUIER

  • @pimpasteak your point is...?

  • @jlbassplayer For 300 dolars? never! xD

  • Dont think of it as muscle fatige, but a workout to turn your hands to a true bassists' hands.

  • This bass is the best. It sounds great, feels great, looks great, and is very durable. An improvement for me would be to get rid of one of the volume knobs, but that's my only problem.

  • ive seen a 'fender' version of this that was like £1000 and then i came across the squire version which was like £200, whats the differnce? i thought fender and squire where the same thing?

  • @lol4lyflol Standard Squire is a fairly poor instrument. Squire Vintage Modified is an entry-level good instrument. Compared to Fender, Squire Vintage Modified has cheaper wood, slight gaps around neck pocket therefore less sustain, neck tongue sits a higher than it should therefore some buzz on higher frets, bridge is junk, pickups hum when only 1 is on. HAVING SAID THAT... if you spend $200 bucks or so on a Badass II bridge and fret levelling - great instrument.

  • @Craptron2000 You are making generalizations. Fender quality control is very hit or miss. I traded in an American Jazz bass for this thing. I prefer my pbass, but this is a quality instrument. FYI the neck pocket is way tighter on the Squier. Also, American Jazz pickups also hum unless they are at even levels, unless of course you drop noiseless pickups in it.

  • in my opinion, the pickups, strings, amps, pedals and miscellaneous electronics affect tone the most.

bodywoods and fretboard wood affect tone in a very subtle way.

  • @xPsuedo the bodywood has more effect than the pickups by far, but the amp has the most effect.

  • @perfectdisasterband Not really. Body would is a much more subtle difference.

  • @bilbomarks no big difference the differnce between my jazz bass made of alder and another jazz bass I played with same mexican standard pickups sound completely different

  • @perfectdisasterband I have 3 telecasters made of 3 different woods. Very little difference in tone. That's more a variable of build or pickup winding than anything else, I'm sure.

  • @bilbomarks yes but do those telecasters all have different [ickups and do you run them through the same amp because the amp is the biggest effector then body wood then pickups

  • @perfectdisasterband I only have 1 amp and I installed my favorite pickups in all of them. What are you trying to prove with your question? The only way to compare body wood tonality is by having eliminating variables. I have very few variables. One of 'em even has a poly finish. That one has the 2nd best sustain. Tone is almost identical between the 3 otherwise.

  • Comment removed

  • @perfectdisasterband Not true. You sound like a middle aged guy with a snobby attitude and too much time on his hands.

  • @youhavegeniusshins dude I've proved you wrong you sound like a 13 year old dumb shit who has way to much time on his hands and can't accept being proved wrong for knowing jack shit.

  • @perfectdisasterband Have you ever heard of commas, grandpa? Haha, and how exactly did you "prove" anything?

  • @youhavegeniusshins I'm 15 mate, now who looks a prick and I did prove it learn to read, how old are you 5???

  • @perfectdisasterband Ok, a 15 year old and a middle-aged guy are basically the same. Also, you didn't prove anything and your parents secretly resent/hate you. Keep that in mind baby dick.

  • @youhavegeniusshins firstly my parents don't hate or rescent me and look who has resorted to childish insults because they have no really input to the arguement or comebacks so um you call me baby dick rich dude :L

  • Get rid of the fricken Duncans and put some Dimarzios in there. Then you can come back and play something with some pop!

  • the soft maple body is dead, tonally.I just couldn't be bothered trying to sell the thing so I had to purchase an allparts alder body and it's actually a quite useable bass now.Except for the fact I spent 295$ for a squire neck I'm basically happy with what I have.

  • @rw5791 Give me a break. Solid bodies don't vibrate. You can make them out of almost anything, and the tone WILL NOT CHANGE.

  • @gmdinformation Why do you think guitars are made out of ash, alder and mahagony?Because they are the most musical sounding tonewoods that are still cost effective.Make sure to get a lightweight one but not too lightweight. And then get some fender pickups from the 1970's.They're almost as good as the sixties pu's and a helluva lot cheaper.

  • @rw5791 They're made out of those woods because they're strong enough to take the tension of steel strings without the bridge screw ripping out of the holes. You'll find solid bodies made out of all kinds of things including aluminum, fiberglass. I made my first bass out of joined and laminated pine because it was all I could afford when I was a kid. And if you look around on YT you'll find tons of examples of telecasters called pinecasters. They sound like any other teles, but don't last long.

  • @gmdinformation make sure if you get an ash guitar to get swamp ash. It's not as cheap or durable as northern ash but it sounds a hundred times more musical.I guess the worst guitar I ever heard was made from MDF,multidensity fiberboard, basically a very dense particle board.God,did that thing sound like shit.

  • @rw5791 It can't sound more musical if it doesn't vibrate. An acoustic or archtop guitar's top is a big part of the sound because it vibrates. Not so with a solid body. In fact, I just swapped out the alder body on my tele for an ash body because I had a couple of chips out of the old body. It sounds exactly the same as it did before. Look at Steinburger bases. They sound great though there's hardly any body there at all. Jeff Baxter's fiberglass Roland strat sounds like any other strat.

  • @gmdinformation of course it vibrates. In fact, a bass will vibrate even more than a regular guitar.See.you pluck the string and it vibrates and transmits those vibes through the bridge and nut into the body. When I swapped the allparts alder for the shitty soft maple I didn't even have to plug it in.Just playing it acoustically I could hear and feel that I had live one.

  • @rw5791 It's not the body you're feeling vibrate; it's the neck. And yes, if you sawp out necks, especially if they're different in density, you can tell the difference. A heavier neck will always have more low end. You don't even have to swap necks. Just take a couple of wood clamps and attach them one at a time to the headstock and listen to the change in tone. Now do the same clamping them to the body, and the tone will not change.

  • @gmdinformation The squier neck is not bad, actually but the soft maple body is as dead as a door nail.I got the allparts alder body for 135 unfinished and I lucked out cuz it's a live one.Every note I play seems more meaningful.

Even the finish affects the tone, always better to have a thin coat.I think what happens is the vibrations freely radiating from the body allow the pickups to sense the string more clearly. The soft maple has a constipated sound that makes me want to not play the bass.

  • @rw5791 "Seems" is the only word in you post I need to see. Again, I'd encourage you to look-up "pinecaster" at YT and compare the sound with other teles. There is no difference, and scientifically there can never be a difference any more than a finish can effect anything. It's all in your mind. There's nothing subjective about science. A solid body will not vibrate, period. You've wasted your money. A solid body is simply an anchor and not one thing more.

  • @gmdinformation pine is not a bad tonewood really but It's a bit too warm and wooly for me.I like the snap and snarl of swamp ash but don't count out the balanced tone of alder either.Mahagony is the tonewood of the gibson gods and a critical part of the LP "wall of sound" but only if you glue a slab of maple on top to brighten up the sound.

  • @rw5791 Pine is not a bad tone wood? The whole point of people building pinecasters was to prove that it makes no difference what you make the body out of. They used pine specifically because it IS such a bad tone wood. You will NEVER find an acoustic guitar top made of pine. And that tiny slither of maple added to the top of a Les Paul is merely for show as everyone knows. Les Paul has said many times that the whole reason he invented the solid body guitar was because it didn't vibrate.

  • @gmdinformation some people like a warm tone for their tele and if you've got a really aggressive PU pine can make for a pretty good guitar.Myself,I like that snappy bakersfield sound so it's got to be swamp ash for me.Now for humbuckers I've got a prs all mahagony santana and it's sound is similar to a gibson sg but sometimes I do yearn for a LP just to get that extra bite from the maple top.

  • @gmdinformation "What I wanted to do is not have two things vibrating. I wanted the string to vibrate and nothing else." ~~Les Paul

  • @rw5791 Since when do solid body guitars vibrate? Have you never played a Steinberger guitar? Get a clue.

  • @bill51923 I should point out that the maple tops on old LP's was old growth top grade hard maple and the mahagony was old growth honduran.Forget about playing it, just rap the wood with your knuckle and you can find the good stuff. The wood on this squier bass is some soft maple shit from indonesia or some other asian hellhole. You might as well burn it in your fireplace. It's about tone, man.

  • They just came out with a model in black that has a maple neck that has white block inlays and white bound neck (painted on)

  • ok i have this bass wich is awsum. but one problem. iv lowerd the action as much as i can and the one in the guitar shop wich is exactly the same as mine has much lower action so its a lot nicer 2 play. what am i doing wrong when im lowering the action?

  • @stephen102 Squier basses suffer from "inconsistency" when they are compared to one another, I also own a VMJ and the action has been the biggest issue with it, try shimming the neck, it will help the action but in my case I'm still not satisfied with it (I'm prob spoiled by my schecters C4, really low action)

  • @mazatleco17 . thanks 4 the help. what do you mean buy "shimming"?

  • @stephen102 A quick google help will give you a detailed answer, but basically shimming a neck is putting something on the neck pocket (cardboard, piece of a credit card) to change the angle of the neck.

  • 3:15 zep ftw!

  • I agree with the action being too high, otherwise it's a great bass.

But on that note, how do you lower the action?

  • @stefdelev action(space between neck and underside of string) can easily be adjusted by lowering your saddles. if you arent sure, your local guitar shop would set it up for you just how you like. depending on your bass, you might need to shim your neck, but thats probably not the case.

  • This bass is really beautiful in this warm finish. I have never seen it in stores so I have a though time to decide what the colour really is like. Some pictures (and this video) shows a warmer body colour, while in some pictures the body is pale and boring natural finish, just like the original Fender American Vintage Jazz. Can someone help me bout this question please?

  • whats gloss on the neck like? "sticky"? i like lots of finish

  • arhg!can't decide between this and a jaguar..does the jag have a nice slap tone?

  • been wanting to play one of these since they came out but have never been a fan of how thin the neck is at the first fret. but the pickups make this bass sound amazing and do these pick ups come on the left handed model anybody?

  • @piledriver89 i've got the left handed model, and you do get those pick ups, they sound awesome

  • Hold everything! A gearwire reviewer that has charisma AND knows what he's talking about. ABOUT TIME!

  • i hate the intro music

  • Im thinking of upgrading- i have a squier standard jazz bass and im stuck between a squier vintage modified and a Fleabass- would this bass actually be an upgrade from the squier standard? thanks.

  • @Jimmmeeehhh yes it would be an upgrade. the pickups are amazing, it feels great, decent price, decent hardware. but if you have the money, possibly look into a used anerican fender jazz.

  • I got this bass, and I love it more than anything ever. I can't really afford to get expensive shit all the time, so this bass was perfect.

  • 3:13, what is and should never be by led zeppelin

  • @tager1247 Damn, i thought i'd be the first one to comment this!

  • Back in the day Geddy used a Rickenbacker 4001 and you can see it in the video for Tom Sawer in Russia . As of 6 years ago in concert he only used his black Fender Jazz bass

  • @boomer61 as of Counterparts he switched to his jazz bass

had more balls than the Wal and they needed its sound for where they were headed next

    so like 16 years ago

  • so great man !!!

  • wow, you can just hear the buzz from the pickups, theyre louder than him talking!

  • Damnnn! that jew got da funk!!!

  • this guy usually seems like an idiot, but he plays rather well... hah

  • where does it have a pickup switch

  • @George068890 it doesn't, just volume knobs for each pickup

  • i have this bass... had it 10 months. fuckin love it. my friend has a fender americam standard jbass and i actually like my tone more thanks to the duncans in it. actions super loose and low i fuckin love my vintage modified and the best think.....costed me only 190 bucks.

  • The Jesus of bass.

  • what amp are you using, sir?

  • you are 1 really good bass player, owen!

  • I'm trading in my yamaha rbx374 for this tomorrow!! this bass will sound excellent when I shred metal on it! I'm stoked!!

  • @Whitemoon379 metal on a jazz bass.....seriously people like you are fuckin music up

  • @richylee69 you mean anthrax and revocation are fucking metal up too?

  • @Whitemoon379 i said music not metal dicktits. And anthrax and revocation both suck

  • @richylee69 ok

  • @richylee69 Geddy Lee uses a jazz bass, and used it on classics like Tom Sawyer, which has one of the most aggressive bass lines I've ever heard.

  • @bluenote71 all his live shit....he RARELY uses a jazz bass and i cannot remember the actual bass he uses. for the record RUSH IS NOT FUCKING METAL YOU RETARD

  • @richylee69

he used the rick a lot a while back, then he switched to a steinberger, then a Wal, then for counterparts and to now he's on the J bass

  • @vectron12 I remember the rick and stein, what exactly was the wal? was that the ibanez lookin one?

  • @richylee69 i think so

    watch?v=8AFy7piA8UQ&feature=related

he used it through a show of hands

  • @richylee69

What do you mean "music up"? (sorry dude, I'm English...)

  • that sound makes my jaw drop its sick

  • in soviet russia gear wires you...

  • @screamodrummer1234 lololololololololol

  • I own this bass and you are never going to find a better one for this price.

It would be great for double the price .

  • @gearwire Haha, love the 'What is and What Should Never Be' bass line. Sounds so cool.

  • this bass is awesome i think i might get it

  • Well I LOVE the Gearwire intro track, thumbs up if you agree!

  • Allmost everything this guy says about this bass is true EXCEPT for the high action. this bass almost has as low action as my Ibanez. It has lower action than my jag and also feels better than it too. I would take this bass (got it for 200 usd) over my 850 usd Jag bass.

  • @T3hbassmasta Used or new? (your 200 usd)

  • @tehJESSEH new at a small local shop

  • These basses rule. I played this one in the store. I own the fretless version but I think I'll get this one too eventually. It also looks a bit like Marcus Miller's bass...

  • what would be better for punk rock and classic rock...this...the mexican standard...or the 60's classic vibe jazz bass?

  • i find it kinda creppy that he keeep looking at the camera while he plays

  • I like how you can adjust the action easily on Fender basses. All you have to do is stick a wrench in the hole above the nut. My bass teacher lowered the action on his bass and it was 1,000,000 times easier to play.

  • @PinkTheFloydable every bass or guitar is like that

  • the audio transcribtions are just awfull

  • Just bought this today, Im having some fun with it

  • In Poland it costs like ~500-600$ So it's twice the price as in USA

  • is this a good punk bass? like blink and green day and shit?

  • @WrapdInStripez You'd prolly be better off looking at a pbass or something with MM pickups.

  • @WrapdInStripez well mark and mike both use fenders so i guess it probably would be good aswell

  • @WrapdInStripez I play In a band that has that genre and I play this bass too. Mark Hoppus and Míke Dirnt use fender basses, but precisions. slight difference. This one is basically a fender jazz bass´and You can play it in such a band, of course. With a lowered action and a buzz-free fretboard no prob. Ask me how to get that done if you buy it. cheers!

  • @SaintUdnitz hey bro, ya i bought it now if u could help me set it up plz?? thtd be great
