Though the old style did create a better 'cartoon-like' effect, they were extremely dangerous and are now illegal. These loads are much safer & will still get a reaction.
The cigarette load I used to buy in Coney Island sounded like a 12 gauge shotgun. But you're right you can't get them anymore. My ears rang for a week and a 2 day headache to boot. But it sounded like my Remington 870
