This is one of my al time fave songs - A song that I want to have my loved ones remember me by... Although the subject matter doesn't fit exactly with my life I LOVE the addictability of this song, the country themes, and the feeling of alienation and pride when you see Anika Moa in crazy New York City. I have so much respect and admiration for her, and could listen to this song on repeat for days!
Despite all the comments,,some good,,some bad,,,,im here 4 the music and ANICA rocks,,,,my dada'a funeral song,,,praise be unto him.. jah rasta farai,,,lion of zion,,,respect,,,,peace,,,love and good times
I especially like the line.. "He prays to God to fix him up, knows I drink from the furry cup". Yes it's so important we know everything about her heritage, sexuality, tats etc. Great to see she can afford shoes now.
Way cool song, brings a tear to the eye, great lyrics too, up there with the best nz has produced.Saw a great doco about her offer to do the states contract a few years ago.She turned them down i think from memory.I also was bought upo in hornby and when i was there , there werent too many maori families in the area.I thinkj the Adair family were the only maori close to us.and she did go to hornby high!
like all of us, she thinks that her old man is great. I can totally relate. When I was young I used to think my old man was the super man, but as I grew up I realized he was only human and he surely could not play the guitar like Carlos Santana but he was great in his own way, he gave his girls all the opportunities he could, for a south Asian dad that is a great deal, I miss you pappa.
First off Nelum66, apologies for the late response. I certainly get where you're coming from. The difference between you and Anika (from what little I know of you, comparatively speaking) her father was very much out of the picture. Just listening to the words should give you some insight into how his actions impacted on his daughter. The difference is that his genes created a wonderfully talented, very funny, (seemdingly) honest woman that has remained true to her self and her mum
I couldn't give a rats arse what your name is. I knew Tia well, having worked and played with Horizon so stfu if you've nothing positive to contribute. BTW, consider some remedial writing classes. You're all but incomprehensible. Oh wait.., don't tell me.., you're cool because you're gangsta or some such crap. "Rock Against Racism"
I just read that tia died a couple of years ago. What a fabulous tribute to a man that clearly wasn't the typical "kiwi" dad. Good for you Anika. This tribute shows real class. Not that I'm surprised. You've always stuck to your principles. You really are a class act.
Tia Moa, Anika's father is most definitely Maori. He was lead singer and guitarist in a band called 'Horizon' in 1980s Christchurch, having played at gigs that I was involved with organising at the time. As she says in the song, "plays the guitar like carlos santana should have done". He was an awesome presence, with flinging dreads and they're some happy memories. How people can get this so wrong is beyond me when there was even a documentary piece about Anika's life in Hornby and beyond.
oh cool. Was that at the Zanzibar on Lincoln Road? And maybe the Gladstone and Star&Garter? Weird times, Rogernomics ruled but fantastic music all over the planet
Cracks me up how people get there info totally misconscrewed lol. Your right Jlee because I know her father as well and he is Maori and her mum is a Kiwi.
te ataahua hoki o tenei kotiro Maori...kapai ra Anika...waiata mai aau waiata kia rongo whaanui atu te ao..excellent Maori woman and I love her music...kia kaha kotia..ka mau te weehi!
I have always liked this chick she reminds me of me ....Your awsome keep it up Anika she's a Kiwi and she likes her own way and I respect that your to much alright. Ka Pai!
u rock anika, as a wahune maori myself who plays guitar, very cool alternate sounz, wish i was in your back up band, i play nice melodic electric guitar, your music is gr8 to jam with, ka pai ehoa...
I love this song!! I heard Anika sing it the More FM winery tour last year in Matakana......Shes just as good live! And she is so down to earth, while singing she was chatting to the crowd and drinking a beer.
if only they had more realistic singers in america, without them giving into all the materialistic stuff. If only i was born in NZ instead. great music though
The reason she turned them down was cause they wanted to american-ify here like they want to do to everyone, they wanted her to start wearing makeup, fake tan n "pretty her up" so to speak, n this not only clashed with her personality but her music as well her genre of music isn't and shouldn't be pop. She is alternative n she isn't materialistic nor does she want things just for the sake of having them so she decided to stick with what she was happy with in nz.
Can anyone PLEASE explain to me why Anika isn't more successful and popular than she is? I don't understand it. She's a brilliant songwriter and has the most beautiful voice. Why doesn't this translate to wider appeal?
Well, I was reading her page in Wikipedia the other day and theres a part that says:
"She received a record deal with Warner Music in New Zealand and Atlantic Records in New York. The record company had big commercialized plans for her - which conflicted with her brash down-to-earth personality. Overall Moa did not enjoy her time in America and returned to base herself in New Zealand."
So maybe it was her own choice not to be too popular...
American's are good at publisizing themselves more than any other country. American's also show little interest in anything that isn't American. The job of New Zealand is to push Anika into their faces, as much as America does into ours, then they may actually notice.
You were fabulous on the Winery tour - loved this song then my first introduction to it. You're a treasure and man can you write lyrics that touch the heart (trying to find the words to this but no luck). So glad you're true to you and NZ. Spread the love - you'd be embraced in Ireland - go for a tour.
Of course this is filmed in Amsterdam - I can recognise my home anywhere (We moved to New Zealand when me and my sister were nine). Notice when she's playing the guitar - behind her on the wall is a picture of Anne Frank.
I don't think so, Queenstown doesn't look like that. While the video is basic, there are some symbols that tell a story. In the beginning you see a New Zealand bird, indicating she is in NZ, later you see her travelling (I assume to see her father), she arrives in what looks like a European city, perhaps Amsterdam or somewhere in England (I noticed a lot of english names, but no dutch names.) You also see her drop a shell (Looks like it is from NZ) into the river, perhaps to say goodbye?
Yeah, I think you are right. Looks like Amsterdam or even Leiden in Holland, but England is also part of it. The bicycles give Holland away. Did you see the necklace she wears, that is a typical Maori greenstone from NZ.
Anika's Dad passed away 2007, apperently this song is dedicated to him. Her dad, Tia Moa was my work mate and flatmate. Awsome on the Guitar!! He spoke much of his Daughter Anika. Anika has beautiful voice indeed!!
I had no idea that Tia had died. I had some fantastic times with him and the band, Horizon. He had such presence. I'm not trying to pretend he was perfect. He had a lot of failings and that is why Horizon ultimately failed but when you were at a gig, he sung and performed in a way that had you mesmerised. I feel sad to read this. I had so much fun at the dole day rages. Fantastic times in Christchurch, mid-80s "Rock Against Racism/Rock against Sexism"
Oh wow, you must of knew Tia quite well.. He used to live next door to us in Shirley, I only spoke with him a few times.. but he was very very proud of Anika and spoke highly of her all the time. Funny, I ddnt even know she wrote a song for him lol.. cnt believe he's gone, jus seems like ystday I saw him sittn on his step, with his guitar in a pair of cut off jean shorts, unbrushed moppy hair and t-shirt far too baggy for him lol. Quite a character and very good neighbour.
wow.., how wonderful an image you share. I knew Tia around 1984-86 and his stage presence was one of flying dreads and Horizon singing "Rock against Racism" and "Johnny B Good" (a la Peter Tosh). Such happy memories, set against such a bad rogernomics background.

I wonder if she knows that she is playing her guitar up side down.
