hyperhoipoloi Best Band, Best Singer/Songwriter: Mark Burgess! Never again will we hear such originality and Pure Genius in a singer or songwriter!!!! Even the band sounds extraordinary just like Mark, what a match of pure perfection so rare!!!!!!!!! I am so honored to have been able to experience them in my lifetime:)
I have been listening to The Chameleons for 27 years and they are still magical. I am even going to see them again next month. The last time I saw them I didn't have teenage children or a mortgage...... They are simply the greatest band I ever encountered.
This song for some reason reminds me of every girl I once had in my life. So many bittersweet chances and moments that are now lost. Faded away, not unlike this song's outro.
I saw them live at a small club in Southern California in 1986 (I think?). I was young, naive, and thought I had just witnessed a new world order. I was high for days after that show...Today, I wonder what in my psyche drew me to this band- and continues to enthrall and fascinate me. It is perplexing only because I tire easily of most bands; yet this band has fascinated me for so many years. Good Job Chameleons. Great post MarkTurver1990.
I JUST got turned on to them last night! My best friend, (Starship) Ed Kyle made an analog tape in the mid-90's with cuts interspersed with Yes and classical music. Wonderful D.J. style line-up! I told him it reminded me of the eclectic "Little Lighthouse" radio streams from Stanislav (Zabic). Great group...so where the hell was I back then???
yeah, very nice..., i will have to check out more of their stuff. also reminded me to look up some more stuff by My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive and Ride. thanks for the share:)
the reason why The Chameleons never achieved mainstream success is because they refused to sell out to the music industry. They wanted control over their music and not to have some chumps telling them what to do and how to do it.
If you want fame, the only way to do it is through the music industry. Big business. The music industry is like a mob.
I couldn't agree more with MarkTurver1990. The Chameleons were criminally overlooked. I grew up in the heyday of U2 and Joy Division and I (am loathe to admit) only recently discoverd this great great band. Better late than never I guess. Amazing amazing stuff.
my eldest brother got me into these in the mid 80,s when i was 15 or soo, and i still love them today , such a good band , would of loved to of seen them live
thanks for posting as this and swamp thing are two of me favs !!!!!
Disintegration (1989), Bloodflowers (2000), The Cure (2004) are all great albums albums... in my opinion (especially Disintegration). I don't really like 4:13 Dream and I feel that we're not going to see anymore epic albums from The Cure which is sad.
I agree with you that Disintegration was a very good album (the 2000ish stuff is utter crap in my point of view - sorry), but to me it was not The Cure anymore ... The cult band the Cure was dissolved after Pornography, which is their best album in my books.
That's cool. No need to apologize as it's your opinion. I am guessing you grew up with The Cure? If I was alive and a Cure fan during the transition from Pornography to The Top, I would have been pissed off... lol
I only discovered The Cure about 6 years ago. The first song I heard was Lullaby and then I bought the Greatest Hits CD. I didn't discover Pornography until much later... and I love that album.
The Head on The Door is probably my favorite, though.
You guessed right and I did not want to apologize, because there is nothing to apologize for - only to say, that your opinion in my point of view is not totally wrong as to Disintegration. The Head on the Door? Mediocre, with one or two really nice exemptions ... also there are some songs on Kiss that I really like, but the atmosphere and the cult status was all gone after 1985
@josefrankfert realmente chameleons e uma mistura de pensamentos e sentimentos muito bom nao da para explicar tenho 37 anos e desde os meus 15 anos comecei ouvir
@josefrankfert I can't think of the song but it's a modern song by Interpol, I think it's on their "Turn On the Bright Lights" album. You can really tell that Interpol got alot of inspiration from The Chameleons for that song. They seem to derive alot of their musical inspirations from Joy Division and The Chameleons. So, hopefully you wont lose hope in modern music completely!
@lolinpinguin since they were both pioneers its hard to imagine anyone thinking either Joy Division or the Chameleons being overrated in their primes, but im sure someone wasnt impressed. it is tough to replicate the emotion in these recordings, but their are plenty of bands today that represent.
Yea, like Arcade Fire, Warpaint, Grizzly Bear, Sufjan Stevens, Death Cab for Cutie, Mumford and Sons, Florence + Machine, Daft Punk, Tobacco, ceo, Fleet Foxes, Caribou, Avey Tare, Pomplamoose, Joy Electric, The Gorillaz... I do not get the hate for modern music, it is fabulous if you look in the right places.
Adore the Chameleons and Joy Division though. My favorite shirt is an Unknown Pleasures JD Tee!
" 'til your turn comes 'round...again....again..." (enter 2nd half of the song...total bliss as presented through the guitar riff...I play it in my head over and over again)

The Cure? The Cure?? why to talk about The Cure when this is a better band by miles??
SilencedChaos 2 years ago 5
the reason why The Chameleons never achieved mainstream success is because they refused to sell out to the music industry.

The Chameleons, with this song, just might have invented shoegazing.

WTF? I like Joy Division, The Cure & The Chameleons (and in no particular order). C'mon you, guys...! This is nonsense...

The Cure used to be good ... until the mid 80ies only though

Disintegration (1989), Bloodflowers (2000), The Cure (2004) are all great albums albums... in my opinion (especially Disintegration). I don't really like 4:13 Dream and I feel that we're not going to see anymore epic albums from The Cure which is sad.
TheDiscoLemon 2 years ago
I agree with you that Disintegration was a very good album (the 2000ish stuff is utter crap in my point of view - sorry), but to me it was not The Cure anymore ... The cult band the Cure was dissolved after Pornography, which is their best album in my books.
dustinzk 2 years ago 2
That's cool. No need to apologize as it's your opinion. I am guessing you grew up with The Cure? If I was alive and a Cure fan during the transition from Pornography to The Top, I would have been pissed off... lol
I only discovered The Cure about 6 years ago. The first song I heard was Lullaby and then I bought the Greatest Hits CD. I didn't discover Pornography until much later... and I love that album.
The Head on The Door is probably my favorite, though.
TheDiscoLemon 2 years ago
You guessed right and I did not want to apologize, because there is nothing to apologize for - only to say, that your opinion in my point of view is not totally wrong as to Disintegration. The Head on the Door? Mediocre, with one or two really nice exemptions ... also there are some songs on Kiss that I really like, but the atmosphere and the cult status was all gone after 1985

@josefrankfert The 80s had their Beibers and Gagas too. You can find good music both mainstream and underground from any era, imo.
tom77092 1 year ago
@josefrankfert I love both of those bands and im 16.
skateboard3001 1 year ago
@josefrankfert I can't think of the song but it's a modern song by Interpol, I think it's on their "Turn On the Bright Lights" album. You can really tell that Interpol got alot of inspiration from The Chameleons for that song. They seem to derive alot of their musical inspirations from Joy Division and The Chameleons. So, hopefully you wont lose hope in modern music completely!
AOAWHATSUP 1 year ago
@josefran... Thats what "grown ups" said when j.d. and the chameleons were in their prime.
lolinpinguin 1 year ago

Peace.

Maybe one day they will gain the recognition they deserve.
Joy Division had critical recognition in the same way as The Chameleons, but unfortunately only mass recognition took place when Ian died.
But that is the pattern.
