@efebrahim you are right. Its Swahili. Boney M are actually singing in Swahili though not doing the right pronunciation. The song was originally composed and sung by Fadhili Williams, in 1950s. Fadhili was Kenyan not Tanzanian.
Not really @efebrahim its a love song. 'Malaika' is angel; so nakupenda malaika means I love you angel. It's a song worth playing even today. I personally like the original version and Mirriam Makeba version as well.
IT IS GREAT MUSIC,IT REMIND ME OF WHAT TRUE LOVE IS ALL ABOUT-PURE,UNDILLUTED,AND SWEET.THE MUSIC WILL REMAIN EVERGREEN,BLESS THE COMPOSER,THE SINGER AND THE PEOPLE THAT POPULARISE THE MUSIC.I DOFF MY HEART.
They are saying my name!!!! Sounds like my mom trying to wake me up when I was little. What else are they saying? Are they singing about an Angel or Queen.....cause it means both. LOL, I LOVE THIS!!!!!!
@ChavisMade malaika means angel and the song is a man singing to a woman named malaika and hes saying i should have married you malaika. says i love you and what to do etc
@afreeka10 But, you also have to understand that Fadhili Williams is not popular in the international scene. You might as will thanks to BONEY M. for bringing this music to the world.Besides, BONEY M. are not Kenyan, don't expectect them to enunciate Swahili dialect like their native tongue. Make sense pls!

Not their fault but some of the pronounciations of the swahili words are terrible eg they are pronouncing 'Penda' as 'pende' etc but being German its not their fault.
@khalidm102 Actually they were all West Indian, Marcia and Liz were Jamaican, Maizie was from Montserrat, all spoke English as a first language. Bobby was from Aruba (Dutch, but the people there largely spoke English too). It was just the songs were mostly written by Germans and had ESOL lyrix. Of course being big stars in Germany they had to live there, but their music was aimed mostly at the English speaking world. This song is off a 1981 album, at which time they were past their prime

I love this song. I am a Nigeria but I have always thought they were speaking German. But I am happy it is an African Language. Meanwhile they did not borrow from Arabic but the other way round
@Emeka7777 ummm.. you re from Nigeria and you clearly don't know the history of Swahili. It is an African language that started as a result of trade between Arabs and the locals of the East African coast, way before the arrival of Europeans. After, European arrival, they kept on borrowing more words from Portuguese, German & English. It also has words from Hindi and Persian. It is the only African language spoken in the AU. And it is the fastest growing African language followed by Hausa.
@nasry12 UNITY. IF YOU R TRULY FROM NIGERIA AS YOU'D CLAIMED, SWAHILI IS NOT A SPOKEN LANGUAGE IN NIGERIA AND TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE IN MOSTLY WEST AFRICA.
HOWEVER, IN SOUTH AFRICA APARTHEID ERA, THE afrikaans FORMULATED THEIR OWN LANGUAGE THAT HAS ZERO ZULU INFLUENCE DESPITE THE FACT THAT THEY ARE INSIDE AFRICA. THE AFRICANS NEED TO LEARN HOW TO COMMUNICATE WITH ONE ANOTHER WITHOUT HAULING INSULTS AT EACH OTHER. I HOPE WITH THIS EXPLANATION, YOU'LL SEE THAT I'M NOT MAD AT ALL. THX BRODA.
@nasry12 IT IS MUCH BIGGER IN SIZE AND ALL. NOW, WHY DIDN'T AFRICAN LANGUAGES ESPECIALLY OF THOSE NATIONS AT THE PROXIMITY OF THE ARAB NATIONS HAVE INFLUENCE ON THE ARABIC LANGUAGE? IN ORDER WORDS, HOW MANY WORDS OF ANY AFRICAN LANGUAGES ARE THERE IN ARABIC? ANSWER IS ZERO. NOW THAT I'M SUGGESTING THAT AFRICA SHOULD HAVE A LANGUAGE THAT IS ALL AFRICAN, WITHOUT SUGGESTION OF ANY PARTICULAR LANGUAGE, I'M BEING ATTACKED & CALLED ALL KINDS OF NAMES WHICH IS OK. I'M JUST INTERESTED IN AFRICAN FORGING
@nasry12 GO BACK AGAIN AND READ MY COMMENT. I NEVER MENTIONED THAT SWAHILI WAS NOT AN AFRICAN LANGUAGE. I STATED, ONCE AGAIN THAT IF AFRICA AS A CONTINENT DECIDE TO HAVE A UNIFIED, OFFICIAL LANGUAGE, THAT I, NAIJANISTAN WILL NOT SUPPORT SWAHILI LANGUAGE BECAUSE OF ITS ARABIC INFLUENCE. PERIOD. I SUGGESTED THAT THE LANGUAGE BE IT FROM NORTH,SOUTH, EAST OR WEST WITH ZERO FOREIGN INFLUENCE SHOULD BE CONSIDERED.
LET'S LOOK AT THE SIZE AND THE POPULATION OF AFRICA. COMPARED TO THE ARAB NATIONS,
@naijanistan: a characteristic of successful languages is their ability to absorb, integrate and grow. Hence the many Grek and Latin terms in English. Hence the every-diminishing role of French. Kiswahili is ok - it has absorbed the influences of many languages, and will continue to do so. Kiswahili kitukuzwe!
@pwanyonyi AND HOW MANY WORDS OF AFRICAN LANGUAGES DO YOU HAVE IN THOSE LANGUAGES OF THE PEOPLES THAT YOU HAVE JUST MENTIONED? ZERO. WHY DIDN'T THEY ABSORB AT LEAST ONE WORD OUT OF MANY LANGUAGES IN AFRICA? ARE YOU SAYING THAT IT IS OK FOR AFRICANS TO ALWAYS ABSORB THINGS OF OTHERS, AND OTHERS NOT TO ABSORB THINGS OF AFRICANS? I HOPE THAT'S NOT WHAT YOU'RE IMPLYING.
my favorite band, when I listened and I was 9 years old and my sisters started to have a boyfriend, that those years when everything was innocent for me as I come back to those years have not made the mistakes I make this day.
This Kiswahili Song was Sung by Fadhili Williams a Kenyan in 1960's he went on to win accolades all over the world for his sweet infectious swahili love tunes.
Did Boney M pay for royalties?? or we Match demonstrating for Reparations?
@djcrookz Not true. This was written by a Tanzania who was living in Arusha Tanzania. The song was true story in 80's when i was living in Arusha, i used to hear about this Lady "bibi Malaika". The Man went to Kenya and he was in the same group with Fadhil Williams. When he left Kenya and stoped playing music, he never wanted to talk about this song. He wanted to marry his Cousin (popular in Muslims but from Aunt side) but parents refused cause the man was Poor.
I've just found Boney M, and find the music awesome...but they didn't write these songs. At least half of them didn't even sing them. They were the puppets of the svingali that made Milli Vanilli
@thehappyhippyo0 Maybe it is a tribute to the songs writer - who is from Kenya, in Africa. The title word Malaika means angle in both Swahili and Arabic.
VERY COOL

That's right; Malaika or Malaa’ikah is an Arabic (plural) word for Angels!

Just found out Liz Mitchell was former member of Les Humphries Singers and also did this song with them.

I've just found Boney M, and find the music awesome...but they didn't write these songs. At least half of them didn't even sing them. They were the puppets of the svingali that made Milli Vanilli

thehappyhippyo0 1 year ago
@thehappyhippyo0 Maybe it is a tribute to the songs writer - who is from Kenya, in Africa. The title word Malaika means angle in both Swahili and Arabic.

you have to understand though... Boney M. isn't from East Africa... they are doing well to sing in that language I think!
