  • I had this done in February. When I awoke from surgery I instantly felt so much better than I can ever remember. After staying in the hospital over night I was discharged the next day. Pain was very minimal and no reflux. I was so happy with the surgery after the first week I had lost 20lbs which I loved but about 10 days after surgery I was in the process of pulling up my pants and started sneezing real hard. After the third sneeze I felt a tear in the lower part of my chest. Almost instantly

  • I had this done. works great so far!

  • good luck

  • Had my first consult about this surgery today - 26-year-old male with LPR (and a hiatal hernia to boot from birth) that continues to experience reflux even with 60mg Dexilant daily. Will be meeting with another surgeon to get their opinion next week and then setting up a date for this exact surgery. It will be nice to no longer have (or as much) heartburn and hopefully my upper airway problems can finally begin to heal.

  • I am sorry but I don't know any physicians in your area. Find a major teaching hospital.

  • Fantastic sir So helpfull for a person like me who is having the exact problem and want to be treated very shortly. Can you give me the hospitals in chennai and Trichrirapalli( Tamil nadu India ) where this opertaion is done - Radhakrishnan- Lafarge cement - Lichtenburg- south africa .You can give me your reply to my e mail id geetsrk2002@yahoo.com

  • this procedure usually takes about an hour. If there is a hiatal hernia involved, an hour and one half is typical.

  • thank you for the video... how long does this procedure typically take from start to finish?

  • I had this surgery in 2000. I woke up from the anesthesia and realized the heartburn was gone for the first time in years.

Post surgery, I was on a soft diet for 30 days. On rare occasions I have suffered from bloating from foods like onions. I avoid them and am fine.

This surgery was very successful for me. Would I do it again? YES!

  • Had this procedure performed on me in August 2010...no more reflux, best thing that could have happened for me, Thank you Drs. Miller and Emlich Columbus Ohio!!

  • A horrible excruciating experience this was, but I would go back and have the fundo done again as it has done a great job for me.. I am starting to experience reflux and tablets and some food getting stuck of late, I am going to have to go see my surgeon I believe. But it's worth having done that's for sure. Sorry i posted this the wrong way around, this should be on the bottom of the next comment lol..

  • I had a partial Fundoplication done 5 years ago, it worked great, but I got a terrible infection 3 days after the op that couldn't be tracked to any particular area and ended up back in hospital having to be cut from sternum to naval to look for what was causing the agony I was in. After the op and nothing was discovered, I ended up in an induced coma for 8 days, and it took seven different antibiotiocs to fight the infection. With three working the best in all.

  • This surgery is indicated for patients with both acid and non acid reflux with complications or unable to tolerate meds. Also, patients with a significant hiatal hernia or Barrett's esophagitis are candidates.

  • I had this procedure in Dec 2010. It effectively cured my GERD which was negatively affecting my life. I had complications as well that may be good for anyone thinking of having this procedure to know. Since the surgery I have complications after some meals that may be dumping syndrome including nausea, confusion, dizziness, shakiness and bloating about 40 minutes after eating. I have passed out before and often feel like I will. Can be controlled with diet changes. Still happy I did it.

  • HI -

    Excellent Video.

Is this suregry also recommended for people who suffer from non-acidic reflux?

  • there is always a period of swallowing difficulty after this procedure. It improves over 2 - 3 weeks on average.

I have a contraction problem with my Esophogus it doesn't contract like it should, My concern was after Surgery could there be a problem were food won't pass through the the top part of the Stomach?

  • the sutures are permanent, but on occasion, the wrap can breakdown. The surgery is designed to be a long term cure of the problem. If your symptoms have returned, see an experienced gastroenterologist and have a workup.

  • I had this done about 15-years ago. Do the sutures every come free? Does the stomach grow together at the suture point? Is this a life long fix, I guess is what I am asking. When I had this done, it was very new surgery and I was told not a lot about it.

  • The operation works well in a properly selected patient. If you are having problems at 2 months out, you need further evaluation from your surgeon and GI doc.

  • This operation is last resort- 2 months after and indigestion is worse than before operation plus discomfort/pain. Very frustrated.

  • I had this surgery approximately 6-7 years ago and it has been a revelation for me.

i suffered from indigestion for nearly 30 years and regurgitated my stomach contents regularly into my mouth during the night. in the years since i have had no problems at all, with the exception of swallowing dry items like bred on occasion where it takes a little while to ge tthrough. This procedure was fantastic for me, even helped me lose some kilos (about 7) while waiting for it to stretch out. I recommend.

  • Thanks for the video, it's a lot more informative than the primative pencil sketch my doctor drew me, but I guess that's why he's a doctor not an artist!

  • It is a matter of personal choice. I will incorporate the sutures into the esophagus at times. The single tacking suture seemed best for me in this case.

  • The tacking suture at the end is interesting, in Cameron's they incorporate the sutures in the fundus into the esophagus. Is there any advantage to using only the single tacking suture? are there any problems with it breaking free of the diaphragm and having the wrap migrate?

  • I had this surgery 4 yrs ago and I have lots of digestive problems from it! I would never have it if I could re-do it all!!!!!

  • The surgery is primarily for GERD. Repair of a hiatal hernia usually involves a fundoplication after the hernia defect is repaired. When done by an experienced surgeon, the rate of success is very high.

  • So this is what is going to happen to me? This is for a Hiatel Hernia isn't it? The doctor said I will have to undergo Fundoplication surgery so I'm assuming this is it?

Can I also ask how successful this procedure is, I mean, will I have to undergo more surgery later on? And what are some of the complications you have found from this.

  • @StarKatz The surgeon told me prior to my op that it had about a 90% success rate. Complications would be the wrap being too loose or too tight and requiring another go, or abdominal bleeding. Also if things don't go well they would have to open your chest and forget about key-hole. All surgery has risks, you'll just have to weigh it up, in my case it was a very easy choice to make. There's a very slim chance that people can die from operation, but that's very much less than 1%. Best wishes

  • @StarKatz ..he also said some people may require a correction to the wrap later in life, not everyone though.

  • This is a very common procedure perforrmed for many years. Ther is also a new procedure now called a TIF (trans-oral fundoplication). It looks promising.

  • It would be real interesting to find out how many people have had this procedure done. I need to know if it will make my life unbearable or improve it. The QoL I live now is not good. I have had GERD for 3 years and I am going to see a new specialist this week.

  • @TheCafeGal I had this surgery 2 weeks ago today. It has certainly stopped the reflux/regurgitation and vomiting. I had GERD/GORD for 5 years and it was driving me nuts much like I imagine yourself. I'm still a bit sore and eating is very difficult. I'm on soup and soft food at the moment which isn't much fun. The surgeon said "it'll be 3 months before you can eat a burger and chips (fries)"..

  • @TheCafeGal For all the pain, I am incredibly relieved nor to be bringing up my stomach contents every 5 or 10 minutes like I have been. Best of luck!

  • My dad had this procedure, its kinda cool to see it

  • I appreciate your comments. I hope you can get the surgery soon.

  • Thanx a lot! It is my dream. I have got GERD and it hurts me for years. I live in Azerbaijan but now in Moscow,Russia! I reasearched a little and found out that Laparoscopic Nissen Fundoplication in Turkey. In turkey doctors are much better than others in our region! But the operation is toooooo expensive! thats why Nissen Fundoplication still stays like a dream for me! Thanx a lot.
