I've heard Max, Buddy, Art, Tony, Louie, Tain, Kobie....etc., but I can't believe I'm only now realizing the mastery of Roy Haynes. Fantastic mind...and still going strong at 86! Get his new "Roy-alty" CD. Thanks.
I love "Legends of Jazz Drumming." I don't know how to upload vids from vcr tapes though. If i could, I would. Like the Joe Morello Take Five solo. If you can, please upload it.
Wow, first to comment on this brilliant piece of footage!
I had the pure pleasure of seeing Roy live about 9 years ago and I'll never forget how different he was from any other drummer i have seen live. Not only did he make the rest of the band shake their heads in disbelief for 2 hours, but he also kept the crowd on their toes by jumping off his stool every 2 minutes, yelling " Daaaaamn!!!!"
God bless Roy for not only being a master, but for playing with his heart and not his head.
Amazing! Roy is my favorite drummer of all time... not Buddy, not Neil, Not Lars, not Herb, not all these other amazing drummers that I love to listen to, but Roy. Roy is the MAN!
I remember seeing him for the one time and thought that he looked like he was skiing through his solos - like Jean-Claude Killy on some Giant Slalom course. His feet and hands were so nimble.
Another time I saw him, he did this fill. So surprising and powerful, as if some mini explosion/possesion came out of him. People gasped. Even he was surprised. Enough that he paused playing for a moment and said, "Damn!"

(living) proof that you don't necessarily need rudiments up the wazoo to be musical.
Maybe if I keep playing for another twenty years I'll get that good, lol

So brilliant, saw him with Gary Burton in 68 or so, and he's still playing and awesome as ever! Talk about your roll models.
